A ‘Mario’ Movie Producer Defends Casting Chris Pratt As The Non-Italian Voice Of The Video Game Character

The announcement of Chris Pratt as the voice of nipple-baring Italian plumber Mario was greeted with an “oh no” by the internet. But Chris Meledandri, a producer for Illumination (the home of the Minions) who is working on the Super Mario Bros. movie, thinks everyone should hold their judgement until they hear Pratt’s first “yippee.”

“All I can tell you is the voice that he’s doing for us, and Mario, is phenomenal. Yeah I can’t wait for people to hear it,” he told TooFab. Meledandri said that as an Italian-American himself, he “understand[s] the comments” and backlash, but “Charlie Day, who’s playing Luigi, actually comes from Italian heritage. Yeah, so, that’s our nod.”

Meledandri hinted that the accent issue would be a self-referential joke within the film. “We cover it in the movie,” he promised. “So you’ll see we definitely nod to that.” He vowed that Pratt would not be leaning too heavily into the “It’s a-me, Mario!” “That’s not the tenor of the performance throughout the film,” he said.

And if it doesn’t work out, Pratt can always be re-cast with Matt Berry. Or another Chris.

The still-untitled Mario movie, which also stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and no one as Toadette (so far), is scheduled to come out on December 21, 2022.

Bill Burr Has Explained The Difference Between ‘Creepy’ Star Wars Fans And Mouthy Sports Fans

Comedian Bill Burr stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night to promote the new season of his Netflix series F is for Family, but it didn’t take long for the conversation to veer towards Burr’s newfound fame in the world of Star Wars. The actor/comedian has now appeared in two seasons of The Mandalorian, and he even has his own action figure hitting shelves soon. However, Burr is still adjusting to dealing with his new category of fans, who are notably different from the loud, obnoxious sports fans who listen to his podcast.

Here’s what he told Kimmel:

So it’s been interesting to go into that world because, you know, those fans are just as rabid as sports fans. But their vibe is totally different. Star Wars fans are like, “Hey, wow, I really, really liked you in that episode.” They’re all like respectful and stuff. And then like I always know it’s a sports fan because I’ll just be walking down the street with my wife and they’ll just say, “Hey, Billy B*tch Tits! Hey, the Pats suck!” And I’ll be like, “Hey, thank you! Thanks for listening to the podcast.”

While Burr appreciates how polite Star Wars fans can be, they’re not without their faults. The comedian definitely gets a weird vibe from them sometimes.

“Oh, the Star Wars people can get a little creepy. Like they seem like they’d be in your bushes, possibly,” Burr quipped. “Where a sports fan would just be urinating on your bushes. [The Star Wars fan] would be in it trying to think, I don’t know, ‘He held the Baby Yoda. I need to see what his living room looks like.’”

A Netflix Employee At The Center Of The Dave Chappelle Controversy Has Resigned

Dave Chappelle’s The Closer (on Netflix) continues to churn up controversy, mostly due to his unapologetic stance. To briefly recap, he called himself “Team TERF” (in agreement with JK Rowling’s trans-exclusionary radical feminist stance). Film festivals subsequently dismissed him, and his alma mater disinvited him (to which Chappelle responded with a slight slam) to a fundraiser for naming a theater in his honor. Meanwhile, the situation at Netflix continues to play out after fired and suspended employees filed unfair labor charges, which they have now withdrawn. However, Terra Field (who’s the Netflix employee that Netflix suspended for attending a meeting, for which she wasn’t invited, and who also spoke out about The Closer) has announced her resignation from the streamer.

“I resigned from Netflix yesterday,” Field tweeted. “[Y]ou can read my resignation letter below. I’m not happy that this is how things turned out, but I do think this outcome is the best for all parties involved.” Her resignation letter stands in solidarity with B. Pagels-Minor, the employee who was terminated as she helped to plan a Netflix walkout.

Via NBC News, Netflix, Pagels-Minor, and Field reached a resolution:

“My clients have resolved their differences with Netflix and will be voluntarily withdrawing their NLRB charge,” Laurie Burgess, a labor lawyer representing Pagels-Minor and Field, said. She declined to elaborate.

A Netflix spokesperson said the company and employees “have resolved our differences in a way that acknowledges the erosion of trust on both sides and, we hope, enables everyone to move on.” The spokesperson would not confirm whether the employees had signed a settlement agreement.

Then on Monday night, Chappelle continued to tell trans jokes at Madison Square Garden. Via The Daily Beast:

The 48-year-old had a running gag about pronouns, said the f-slur, joked about claiming to identify as a woman to get a cushier prison placement, and waved off a previous declaration that he would stop making jokes about the LGBTQ+ community, saying that rule only counts when cameras are rolling.

Chappelle further remarked, “Week four of being cancelled, it’s crazy.” His jokes included introducing H.E.R. while adding, “It’s a pronoun you don’t hear much!” When Jon Stewart joined him onstage, Chappelle joked that the two should form a trans-tribute musical act called “They.” In other words, Chappelle isn’t done with his trans-joke shtick yet.

Adele’s ’30’ Is Already 2021’s Best-Selling Album In The US After Just Three Days

Adele knows how to sell albums. Her debut, 19 is only certified 3-times Platinum by the RIAA. She bumped those numbers up with her next two LPs, though, as 21 is 14-times Platinum and 25 is 11-times Platinum. Now, Adele is fresh off the release of 30 and it appears that album is also on its way to sales greatness. In fact, it’s only been out for a few days and it’s already making substantial waves.

Billboard reports that through November 21 (so over the first three days of its release), 30 has sold over half a million copies in the US, which makes it the top-selling album of the year so far. 2021’s previous best-seller, Taylor Swift’s Evermore (which came out in late 2020), has moved 462,000 copies through the week ending November 18.

To clarify, these numbers don’t including streaming figures, so it’s likely that when the final first-week numbers for 30 are unveiled, they’ll be notably higher than 500,000.

If 30 debuts atop the Billboard 200 (which seems all but guaranteed at this point), it will be her third No. 1 album, following 21 and 25. It also won’t be her first chart-topper in recent weeks, as “Easy On Me” was No. 1 on the Hot 100 for four straight weeks before Taylor Swift took its place on top.

Tucker Carlson Sat Down With ‘Sweet Kid’ Kyle Rittenhouse, Who Aired His Many Grievances

On Friday, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted of all charges related to him fatally shooting two people, and injuring a third, on August 25, 2020, amidst protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin after the shooting of Jacob Blake. By Monday night, the 18-year-old had already sat down to give his first post-acquittal interview, with his longtime cheerleader, Tucker Carlson.

Carlson, who once memorably claimed that Rittenhouse was “maintain[ing] order when no one else would,” provided some color commentary while teeing up his pre-taped interview on Monday’s show, where he described Rittenhouse as “bright, decent, sincere, dutiful, and hard-working. Exactly the kind of person you’d want many more of in your country.”

As the baby-faced shooter told his tale of woe, he took some more shots—these ones only figuratively, fortunately—at, well, pretty much everyone. According to Rittenhouse, the police where nowhere to be seen and “the City of Kenosha failed the community. The governor, Tony Evers, failed the community.” If Carlson’s facial expressions throughout were any indication, he was clearly intrigued.

As for that weapon of war Rittenhouse was carrying? Carlson pretty much dismissed that, noting that a lot of other people were carrying guns so, hey, why not?

Fox News

As Rittenhouse tells it, his only goal that evening was to help protect his community. And after that required him shooting a few people, he desperately tried to turn himself in. He told Carlson about how he found a police officer and, after confessing to having just killed someone, was told to “go home.” He also explained how he attempted to go to the Kenosha police station to turn himself in, but he wasn’t able to “because they weren’t accepting visitors apparently.”

After having a chuckle about Rittenhouse driving “across state lines, as we’re now calling it” (LOL!), Rittenhouse explained that “I agree that everybody has the right to protest and assemble, but… I don’t appreciate that people are burning down American cities to try and spread their message.”

99a7ebcdd6e6709bb333c7cd81914578.jpg
Fox News

There are a few other things Rittenhouse doesn’t appreciate, including a September 2020 tweet from then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, which criticized Trump’s refusal to disavow white supremacists and included a video that featured footage of Rittenhouse and his rifle.

“It’s actual malice, defaming my character, for him to say something like that,” Rittenhouse claimed, adding that, “the lies that they can get away with spreading is just sickening and it is a disgrace to this country.” Carlson—one of the biggest perpetrators of falsehoods and misinformation—agreed, clearly unaware of the irony. Rittenhouse went on to lament the fact that his case became political in any way:

“No matter what your opinion is or where you stand, this wasn’t a political case, it shouldn’t have been a political case, it was made a political case. It has nothing to do with race and the ways people are twisting this is sickening. I’m not a racist person. I support the BLM movement, I support peacefully demonstrating. This case has nothing to do with race. It never had anything to do with race. It had to do with the right to self-defense.”

Andrew Garfield And Stephen Colbert Had A Lovely Discussion About Grief That Will Make You Emotional

In Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut tick, tick… BOOM!, Andrew Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, the lyricist and composer of Rent who died the same day as his musical’s first public performance. The film is dedicated to his memory, and during Monday’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert asked the Oscar-nominated actor, who recently lost his mother, about “how art itself helps you deal with grief.”

Garfield took a second to compose himself before answering. “I love talking about it, by the way, so if I cry, it’s… only a beautiful thing,” he said. “This is all the unexpressed love. The grief that will remain with us until we pass because we never get enough time with each other, right?” He said that he “got to sing Jonathan Larson’s unfinished song while simultaneously singing for my mother and her unfinished song. And I’m indebted to John, and I’m indebted to Lin-Manuel Miranda, I’m indebted to everyone who’s brought me to this place so I can honor the most beautiful person that I’ve ever experienced in my life through my art and use it as a way to heal, use it as a way to sew up the wounds.” The tears were flowing from “one of the most gorgeous outlooks on grief” ever.

You can watch the full interview above, and watch tick, tick… BOOM! on Netflix.

Taylor Swift Lets Out A ‘Feral Screech’ In Celebration Of ‘All Too Well’ Becoming The Longest No. 1 Song Ever

It seems like records get broken all the time now when it comes to streaming and charting feats in music. Yesterday, though, Taylor Swift toppled one that stood for half a century: “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and thanks to the dominance of the ten-minute version, it is now the longest chart-topping song of all time. The previous record-holder is Don McLean’s 8-minute, 37-second 1971 single “American Pie (Parts I & II).”

Swift, naturally, is pretty stoked about the whole thing.

On Twitter, she shared a tweet about the news from Billboard and added, “*FERAL SCREECH*.” She quickly followed up, “I’m so proud of this song and the memories I have with you guys because of it. You truly chose this one and now you did THIS?! I’m floored. A ten minute song is at the top of the Hot 100.” She also added, “THANK YOU to the team that made All Too Well (the 10 min): The ultimate craftsman of songs that sound epic [Jack Antonoff], bad ass [Laura Sisk], [Christopher Rowe], and [Liz Rose]! Love you all.”

She also shared a TikTok video (which she re-posted to Instagram) of herself in front of tweets and articles about her achievement. All the while, she mouths along to the audio from a viral video of a salty-tongued toddler repeatedly saying, “What the hell?” She captioned the post, “You guys sent a 10 minute song to number one for the first time in history honestly WTH.”

All in all, it’s been a tremendous past couple days for Swift, as Red (Taylor’s Version) also went ahead and had a chart-topping debut on the Billboard 200.

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Clarifies That Kid Rock’s Wild New Video Is Real And Not One Of His Parodies

Kid Rock is at it again. Last Thursday, the 50-year old rap-rocker released the nation’s latest “Get off my lawn!” anthem with the very aggressive video for the very aggressive “Don’t Tell Me How To Live.” Earlier this year, the Detroiter issued an… err… statement, saying that anyone who was offended by his use of a homophobic slur likely is that very slur. Now his latest song — an unhinged call out of cancel culture — is fairly on brand with his hallmark sensitivity. Trouble is, the video looks like it was edited in mall kiosk and it’s not a far cry to think that it’s just one of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s parodies.

It seems as though Yankovic might have been approached by fans complementing the clip assuming it was his latest effort. But (spoiler alert) it’s not. The comedian/musician tweeted, “To everybody that’s congratulating me right now on my new Kid Rock parody video, let me clarify – that’s not me. That’s actually Kid Rock.”

And to Yankovic’s (and his fans’) credit, the line between parody and actual music is blurry on this one. For starters, the song opens with Kid Rock in white basketball shorts yelling the opening line “F*ck all you hoes!” before swapping into a white fur coat and later wearing a salty shirt that says “Social Media Sucks.” He goes on a tirade with choice lyrics like, “I twang more riffs, I slide through grass, I rip more lines than a ten pound bass,” before Jon Harvey of Canadian band Monster Truck delivers the titular hook over a low budget inferno green screen: “Ain’t nobody gonna tell me how to live!”

At one point in the song, Kid Rock likens himself to Rev Run, David Lee Roth, Bruce Springsteen, James Dean, and even Brad Pitt. This is all after he “joins the space race” by taking off behind Mount Rushmore in a spaceship shaped like a middle finger. Looks like Weird Al might have some competition in the parody game. Or does he?

Craft Beer Experts Shout Out The One IPA They Could Drink Forever

There’s no wrong time of year to drink an IPA. The hoppy, fresh, slightly bitter flavor of a well-made West Coast IPA is thirst-quenching on the hottest summer day. So is a hazy, juicy New England-style IPA. But they are also tons of IPAs brewed for a cold fall day or even a frigid winter night. There is an IPA for all seasons, is what we’re getting at.

Plus, an IPA is a perfect respite from the barrel-aged stouts, porters, and strong ales during the colder months. The bright fruits and hoppy-bombs become a counterpoint to the spice, ABVs, and bitterness of the darker, maltier winter sips.

In an effort to find the best IPAs in all of existence, we turned to a few professionals for help. We asked some of our favorite craft beer brewers, reviewers, and experts to tell us the one IPA they’d drink forever, regardless of the time of year. Keep scrolling to see all of their picks.

Maine Another One

Maine Another One
Maine Beer

Patrick Chavanelle, research and development brewer at Allagash Brewing in Portland, Oregon

ABV: 7%

Average Price: $8 for a 16.9-ounce bottle

Why This Beer?

Maine Beer Company makes a ton of killer IPAs, but Another One is easily my favorite from them and likely from anywhere else. It’s shockingly drinkable for being seven percent ABV and packs an incredibly complex aroma of mangos, pineapple, and citrus. It somehow rides the line between a hazy and old-school IPA, so if you’re looking for either and choose this beer — you won’t be disappointed.

Alvarado Street Mai Tai PA

Alvarado Street Mai Tai PA
Alvarado Street

Jensen Atwood, director of brewing operations at Pure Brewing Project in San Diego

ABV: 6.5%

Average Price: $17 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

Mai Tai PA by Alvarado Street is my pick. It’s a new school juicy west coast IPA that is clear and not hazy and has the tropical fruit flavors of a hazy IPA all while not being so thick and yeasty.

2nd Shift Conjunctivitis Pink IPA

2nd Shift Conjunctivitis Pink IPA
2nd Shift

Stephen Hale, founding brewer at Schlafly Beer in St. Louis

ABV: 5%

Average Price: $12 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

My pick is 2nd Shift Brewing Conjunctivitis Pink IPA. The outlandish nature of the name of this beer, approachable ABV, and color are sure to draw one in and keep one coming back for more.

Finback Smooth Beats Miami IPA

Finback Smooth Beats Miami IPA
Finback

Manny Salvatori, lead brewer at The Bronx Brewery in Bronx, New York

ABV: 6.2%

Average Price: $20 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

The one IPA that I will continue to enjoy until Finback stops making it is the Smooth Beats Miami IPA. This IPA is brewed with coconut and dry-hopped with Equinox and El Dorado hops, making this a juicy, intriguing tropical beer for all seasons.

I enjoy this beer a lot due to its out-of-the-box combination of coconut and hops. They truly made a beer that hits all my flavor profiles.

Lawson’s Finest Sip of Sunshine

Lawson’s Finest Sip of Sunshine
Lawson

Brad Bergman, director of brewing at Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte, North Carolina

ABV: 8%

Average Price: $16 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

This beer has an amazing tropical aroma with some back notes of pine, florals, and citrus. It just has an amazing mouthfeel and enough malt flavor mixed in to balance everything out.

I’m a big fan of this beer.

Odell IPA

Odell IPA
Odell

Brandon Proff, managing partner at Our Mutual Friend Brewing in Denver, Colorado

ABV: 7%

Average Price: $9 for a six-pack

Why This Beer?

Odell IPA is in my opinion the gold standard of the no-coast (or Colorado) IPA. It’s resinous, citrusy, and piney but not higher ABV and bitter like west coast style.

Russian River Happy Hops

Russian River Happy Hops
Russian River

Shaun O’Sullivan, co-founder and brewmaster at 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco

ABV: 6.5%

Average Price: $8.50 for a 22-ounce bottle

Why This Beer?

Happy Hops from Russian River Brewing Company is the one IPA that I can enjoy for a millennium. As Vinnie Cilurzo — Russian River’s brewmaster and co-founder — has said, Happy Hops is a hazy IPA that isn’t hazy. The profound hop flavor and aroma are bright and fresh with a charge of bitterness rounding out this hoppy beer.

Bell’s Two-Hearted

Bell’s Two-Hearted
Bell

Mike Kasian, brewer at Bootstrap Brewing in Longmont, Colorado

ABV: 7%

Average Price: $8 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

I’d probably go with Bell’s Two Hearted. This beer reminds me of IPA’s when they were simple and it showcases Centennial hops which are some of my favorite varieties. It’s floral, piney, and always there.

Altamont Maui Waui

Altamont Maui Waui
Altamont

Matthew Barry, director of operations at Fieldwork Brewing Company in Berkeley, California

ABV: 6.5%

Average Price: $16 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

Altamont’s Maui Waui is my pick. It’s perfect. It’s bright, clear, lower bitterness, and soaked in tropical aromatics. I think Mosaic and Citra are a match made in heaven, and this beer proves it. The flavors are hyper-tropical. There’s ripe cantaloupe, pineapple, and guava.

With a 6.5 percent ABV and a light, clean malt profile, I have no problem justifying having three pints.

Chris McManus, head brewer at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado

ABV: 6.8%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

Why This Beer?

Modus Hoperandi from Ska Brewing is an easy go-to. Bright citrus flavor and aroma from the hops are this IPA’s signature characteristics. It’s a very memorable beer that I go back to again and again.

Adam Lawrence, head brewer at Left Hand Brewing in Longmont, Colorado

ABV: 6.7%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

Why This Beer?

Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing is a great (almost) session beer. It has loads of fruity hop aroma, but it isn’t full of hop particulate and yeast. This beer finishes clean and has a nice balance of bitterness, aroma, and body.

Bridgeport IPA

Mark Youngquist, founder of Dolores River Brewery in Dolores, Colorado

ABV: 5.5%

Average Price: $10 for a six-pack

Why This Beer?

One of the early examples of a style that is now ubiquitous across the U.S. and most of Europe, Bridgeport’s medium-bodied, caramel, and toasted honey suddenly explodes with a floral citrus panoply of all the C hops available at the time (Cascade, Centennial, Chinook), underpinned by a more earthy Ahtanum hops and finished with a snap of carbonation.

Bottle conditioned and near perfect, it’s a damn shame I can’t have one right now.

Jamie Lee Gonzalez, brewer at Living The Dream Brewing Co. in Littleton, Colorado

ABV: 7.8%

Average Price: $20 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

Why This Beer?

King Sue is the most consistent IPA (of any variety) I’ve purchased. Everything about this beer is perfect from the complexity of flavors to the 16-ounce portion that’s just small enough you don’t want to share. I really enjoy the fresh tropical flavors and smooth hazy texture.

It’s a lot of beer packed into a cute dino pint.

Sam Pecoraro, head brewer at Von Ebert Brewing in Portland, Oregon

ABV: 6%

Average Price: $5.49 for a 16.9-ounce bottle

Why This Beer?

Not many IPAs exist at the ideal nexus of drinkability and hop intensity. Those that do rarely deliver the complexity or consistency of Russian River’s Blind Pig. Pine, resin, grapefruit, and berry all layered into a quaffable low six-percent ABV beer make it an IPA I’d drink forever.
