Will Smith Says He Once Contemplated Killing His Father

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince broke out in the late 1980s with their fun, poppy, rap-lite tune “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” which earned them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989 and the devotion of tweens everywhere. But for anyone who reads Will Smith’s new memoir Will, which arrives next week, the title of the song may take on a new—and much darker—meaning.

This week’s issue of People includes an excerpt from the book, which Smith digs into some pretty dark territory—including the time he witnessed his father be physically abusive toward his mother. “My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play, and recital. He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of every one of my movies,” Smith writes of the two different sides to his dad. “He listened to every record. He visited every studio. The same intense perfectionism that terrorized his family put food on the table every night of my life.”

But when Smith was a child, he says he witnessed an act of physical abuse that forever changed his life:

“When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood. That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am.”

Though he was just a child, Smith says that that moment—and his response to it—has tainted some of his greatest achievements. “Within everything that I have done since then—the awards and accolades, the spotlights and attention, the characters and the laughs—there has been a subtle string of apologies to my mother for my inaction that day. For failing her in the moment. For failing to stand up to my father. For being a coward.”

Smith’s parents separated when he was a teenager and officially divorced in 2000. And while the actor-musician-producer remained close with his father, he admits that the anger over what he had seen that day always haunted him and was bubbling just below the surface of every smile.

When Smith’s dad, Will Sr., was diagnosed with cancer, it was his namesake who cared for him. But doing so apparently brought those past feelings closer to the surface, and Smith recounted one particularly dark thought that crossed his mind.

“One night, as I delicately wheeled him from his bedroom toward the bathroom, a darkness arose within me. The path between the two rooms goes past the top of the stairs. As a child I’d always told myself that I would one day avenge my mother. That when I was big enough, when I was strong enough, when I was no longer a coward, I would slay him.

I paused at the top of the stairs. I could shove him down, and easily get away with it. As the decades of pain, anger, and resentment coursed then receded, I shook my head and proceeded to wheel Daddio to the bathroom.”

Smith’s father passed away in 2016, but the incident taught his son an important lesson: “In the end, it will not matter one single bit how well [people] loved you—you will only gain ‘the Smile’ based on how well you loved them.”

Will will be published on November 9th.

Gorillaz Announce A 20th Anniversary Edition Of Their Debut Album And It’s Loaded With New Material

20 years ago, the world was introduced to the first ever “virtual band.” It seems like a prescient creation in hindsight, considering how much of music went online in the two decades since. But Gorillaz have leaned very much into the live aspect and while 2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals, and Russel Hobbs are still fixtures, the project is very much about Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett, Remi Kabaka Jr, and their incredible cast of collaborators.

Now for the 20th anniversary of the debut album (out December 10th), Gorillaz have announced the Gorillaz (20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Vinyl Boxset) and it’s LOADED. There’s over four hours of new recordings, including demos, b-sides…. errr… “G-sides,” and a Live At The Forum. The 8-disc vinyl set also comes with a 27 page dossier-style art book of Gorillaz ephemera that all feed back into the theme of the outlaw virtual band’s creation in a post-apocalyptic world. Virtual drummer Russel Hobbs added some words on the findings that are all contained within the box set:

“Whistles have been blown. Truths have come to light. What started out as a trip down memory lane took a damn sideways turn into the heart of darkness. They say the past is another country. Turns out, it’s a whole other dimension.”

Along with the album release, comes the Song Machine LIVE concert film. It features concert footage, and also a behind-the-scenes featurette with commentary from Albarn and Hewlett. It’ll be in theaters on December 8th with tickets available next week. There’s also a Christmas themed Gorillaz store that’s open now.

Gorillaz (20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Vinyl Boxset) is out on 12/10 via Warner. Pre-order the first edition here.

Gorillaz is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Rolling Loud Explains Why The Festival’s Organizers Are Backing DaBaby’s Upcoming Tour

Just a few months after he was censured over making questionable comments during a concert in Miami, DaBaby has bounced back, announcing his Live Show Killa Tour hitting 22 major cities over the next three months. The tour is presented by Rolling Loud, the festival where he initially got into trouble and started his comeback by appearing at the festival’s New York iteration this past weekend during his mentor 50 Cent’s headlining set.

According to TMZ, a representative for Rolling Loud says the festival’s organizers believe that DaBaby has learned his lesson and grown as a person. In the aftermath of the initial backlash against him, he was removed from several festivals‘ previously-booked lineups and publicly rebuked by a number of public entities, including his “Levitating” collaborator Dua Lipa, pop icon Elton John, and GLAAD, which issued a statement calling his words “inaccurate, hurtful, and harmful.”

During his Rolling Loud set in July, DaBaby tried to hype up the crowd, but his awkwardly-worded exhortation wound up coming across as homophobic and discriminatory. “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexual transmitted diseases that make you die in two or three weeks, then put your cell phone light in the air,” he said. “Fellas, if you ain’t suck a n****’s dick in the parking lot, put your cell phone light in the air.”

Throughout the wave of criticism elicited by his statements, DaBaby either flat-out refused to apologize or egged on his detractors, although he did meet with a number of HIV/AIDs advocate groups. The incident extended into a bit in Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix special and became a hot topic of debate, but that didn’t stop LGBTQ nonprofit organization Relationship Unleashed from issuing a statement about both that spawned a mini-controversy of its own.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Is Set To Host A Job Fair In Madison Square Garden This Month

Jay-Z may not be the best at using social media, but the billionaire is still a savvy businessman, and his Roc Nation company wants to help lift up others in the working world. That’s why they’re set to host a massive job fair in New York City’s Madison Square Garden later this month. There, job seekers can learn to leverage their skills and be interviewed for perspective roles on the spot.

The fair takes place November 18 in Madison Square Garden. In a statement about the job fair, Team Roc’s managing director Dania Diaz talked about the opportunities that are created by the event:

“The Team Roc New York Job Fair is a real opportunity for socio-economic mobility for New Yorkers – those who want to work, yet have not had the exposure or connections to the right-fit jobs, or to the support services that can strengthen their prospects for employment. My hope is this event will not only stimulate New York’s economy but pair the state’s best and brightest employees with the country’s leading organizations. NBA Player Giannis Antetokounmpo Was Vibing Hard At The Harry Styles Show And Thinks He’s ‘A Great Performer’

As if we needed more proof that Harry Styles is currently putting on one of the best live shows of all-time… NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo just gave the pop star a huge compliment. It’s been well-documented that Harry’s fan base is primarily teen girls, and unlike other performers before him, he’s always honored and respected their fandom with a beautiful reverence. But despite the fact that the show was overwhelming attended by women, Antetokounmpo was undeterred in his own fandom. The “Greek Freak” as he’s affectionately called by some NBA fans had to let the internet know that he loved Styles’ show: “I just went to @Harry_Styles concert and it was 99% women and me 😂,” Antetokounmpo tweeted. “I’m a big fan, what a great performer.”

Eagle-eyed fans caught Giannis — who, let’s face it, is a little hard to miss — fully vibing to the music. That’s proof he’s a real head, not just a poser. We have no choice but to stan this man:

And actually, this isn’t even the first time Giannis has proven he knows the power of One Direction. Back in 2020 he posted himself on Instagram enjoying One Direction classics like “Best Song Ever” and “What Makes You Beautiful.”

This man is a true fan, and officially a Directioner in my book.

The Capitol Rioter Who Said She Wouldn’t Go To Jail Because She’s Blonde And White Is… Going To Jail

After openly bragging about her participation in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building, it’s no surprise that Texas real estate agent and social media influencer Jenna Ryan was one of the first batch rioters to be arrested. Ryan’s social media posts provided ample evidence that she participated in Donald Trump‘s insurrectionist “Stop the Steal” rally, but one particular post is coming back to haunt her.

In March, Ryan tweeted at one of her “haters” that there’s no way she’s going to prison. “Definitely not going to jail. Sorry I have blonde hair white skin a great job a great future and I’m not going to jail.” Unfortunately for Ryan, that tweet not only proved to be incorrect, but also sealed her fate as she was sentenced to 60 days in prison on Thursday morning. Via WUSA9:

In part because of the attention her own media appearances drew to the case, [U.S. District Judge Christopher] Cooper said people would be looking to her sentence to see what the penalty was for attacking democratic institutions.

“I think that sentence should show them we take it seriously,” he said.

Following the sentencing, Ryan told reporters outside of the courtroom that she was being “persecuted” by the media. Although, she did admit that her social media activity wasn’t the best idea. “Yes, I regret ever tweeting,” Ryan said, and frankly, who doesn’t? There’s a real lesson here besides not overthrowing the government. Definitely try and avoid that.

Chicago Has Influenced Ausar On All Levels

Family is important, but for rising rapper Ausar (who you might remember from Netflix’s hip-hop competition series Rhythm + Flow), it represents the key to him becoming the budding star that he is today.

After laying down his musical foundation with the gospel sounds he learned in church with his mother, his brother got him into hip-hop.

“We would write and listen to instrumentals,” he says. “It went from me being competitive with my older brother over having to have the best verse to me really having a love for hip-hop.”

Ausar grew up in Chicago, a proud city known for its many beloved hip-hop icons. For him, the city was pivotal in his development.

“It [Chicago] has influenced my style. Chicago has influenced me on all levels,” he adds, giving a nod toward his music and his efforts to show up for the community as an advocate and example.

Besides hip-hop, Ausar has learned a lot of lessons from the game of basketball. Most importantly, discipline. “More than anything, knowing that it requires a regiment to get to where you’d like to go,” he says. “The results come directly from the work you’re willing to put in. On the other side is knowing your role within the team. Knowing when to step up and be a leader. Knowing when to fall back and rely on the people around you. You have a team for a reason: you can’t do everything on your own.”

That drive and positive mindset haven’t made Ausar immune to challenges in his career, though.

“Every step on the road, I’ve faced some form of rejection to get to the yeses,” he says. “I’ve had instances where I entered competitions and I felt like I was good enough, but didn’t end up winning. It killed my confidence. Then I came back around, did the work, was right back in those same positions, and succeeded in them.”

His experience on Rhythm + Flow ended in disappointment, but he knows how rare an opportunity it was and he’s using it as a building block.

“I was knocked out in the first round, but years later, we’re getting the results we were looking for,” he says. Ausar’s absolutely right on that. His recent single, “Homies,” has been gaining traction on streaming platforms and is racking up tens of thousands of plays.

As Ausar continues his journey, he hopes that other up-and-comers like himself can observe and take something away from it.

“I’m continuing to be myself and be a resource and an outlet for anybody who needs one,” he says. “I think a lot of people feel like you have to fit into a very particular box in order to be successful, but that’s not the case at all. As long as you stay true to you, you’ll find it.”

LeBron James Could Miss At Least A Week As The Lakers Want ‘To Take Their Time’ With His Abdominal Strain

The Los Angeles Lakers won’t have LeBron James for Thursday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and his absence looks like it will extend beyond just this one game. James is dealing with an abdominal strain, and according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the plan is to take a slow and stead approach to getting him back onto the floor.

While no timeline for his return has been provided by the Lakers, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN that the team’s medical staff “wants to take their time” with James’ recovery.

A clear-cut timeline still is not available for when James can take the floor, but Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that the expectation is the Lakers star will miss at least a week due to the injury.

James has missed two games this season, although both of those were due to a lingering ankle issue. This injury, per McMenamin, was aggravated on Tuesday night against the Houston Rockets. The Lakers sit at 5-3 at this early point in the season — they went 1-1 in James’ previous absence — while the team’s former league MVP has struggled by his lofty standards. On the year, James is averaging 24.8 points, seven assists, and 5.5 rebounds in 37 minutes per game.
