John Oliver Pinpointed All Of The Problems With Mitt Romney’s ‘Ted Lasso’ Halloween Costume

One can imagine that John Oliver keeps hoping for high more Jeopardy! drama, but fortunately, he had a backup drama to cover this week: GOP Senator Mitt Romney’s bizarre decision to dress up as terminal good-guy Ted Lasso (and hand cookies biscuits to Villain Senator Kyrsten Sinema) for Halloween. This decision didn’t sit well with Seth Meyers or (apparently) Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis, so it’s no surprise that Oliver felt the need to slam Romney’s stunt, too. It wasn’t lost on Oliver that Romney also dropped a caption — “If you believe in yourself, and have clear eyes and full hearts — you can’t lose” — that only proved that he was “quoting Friday Night Lights for no clear reason.” In addition, the Last Week Tonight host felt that Romney and Sinema performed “a move that felt very ‘homeroom teachers dressed as the most popular kids in school.’”

Yet ultimately, Oliver tied “Mitt Lasso” to Romney’s accompanying stunt last week, which was to pop onto Fox News to talk about what an undoable idea it is to raise billionaire taxes. Romney’s rationale is that, if this would happen, billionaires would choose to buy ranches and art and stop creating jobs for people or investing in the stock market, which led Oliver to make an excellent quip about Mitch’s boot-licking skills:

“Not to sound too much like Mitt’s hero, Ted Lasso, but Mitt must be made of wood and yapping on the hour because that man is cuckoo like a clock. Is he Dora the Explorer on an acid trip because just can’t stop licking Boots. And at the risk of stating the obvious here, billionaires already buy ranches and paintings and dinosaur bones they have no use for. Why? Because they have too much f*cking money. There literally aren’t enough things on this planet for them to buy. That is why they’re all racing to space.”

And that’s when Oliver called out Romney for hypocritically cosplaying as a nice guy while totally acting like a not-so-nice guy:

“And it does seem many politicians would rather prioritize the hypothetical threat to a billionaire’s bank account above all else because that’s basically how our world works. Politicians tweet about cosplaying as TV’s nicest guy while opposing problems that could fundamentally change people’s lives… the scariest trick this Halloween might be that some people keep f*cking falling for it.”

Yup, Romney as Lasso doesn’t jibe. And poor Boots.

A LeBron Lookalike Sitting Courtside At Lakers-Rockets Had Fans Spooked On Halloween

LeBron James is in his 19th season in the NBA, something you will surely hear a lot on Lakers broadcasts as it remains astonishing that he can continue to be one of the best players in the league as he creeps up on 37 years old this December.

On Sunday night, James dazzled once again as he and the Lakers took on the poor Rockets in a matchup that was ripe for the picking for L.A, who were looking for a get right spot and got served one of the NBA’s youngest teams on a platter. LeBron and company picked apart the Rockets early, carrying a 20-point lead into the third quarter and it was a very happy Halloween in Staples Center. So happy, in fact, that James took a seat courtside to watch the action. Or, at least, it looked that way when the camera caught a LeBron doppelgänger seated behind James running down the floor that drew the attention of fans.

It helps that the man in the background is out of focus, but he really does eerily look like LeBron is watching himself, just wearing a hat. Immediately, NBA Twitter brought the jokes, with plenty of movie references, but also others who felt this was a bit too spooky of a coincidence for Halloween.

Kevin Durant Got Ejected For Elbowing Kelly Olynyk In The Head

The Brooklyn Nets haven’t gotten off to the start to their 2021-22 season as they had hoped, even considering the absence of Kyrie Irving. At 3-3 entering Sunday night’s game against Detroit, it has been a stop and start affair for the Nets in the first two weeks of the season, but at the least, Kevin Durant has looked like, well, Kevin Durant so far.

KD came into Sunday averaging 28.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, carrying a significant burden while James Harden works his way back into game shape and makes adjustments to the league’s new rules that have cut into shooting fouls. However, Durant’s outing against Detroit was cut short after 27 minutes when some frustration with Kelly Olynyk led to him throwing a hard elbow up high at the Pistons big man’s head on a screen, which was deemed a Flagrant 2 after review and earned Durant an ejection.

The second replay shows why Durant was tossed, as you can see him load up and put Olynyk on the business end of a forearm shiver to the neck/jaw. This surely came after something aggravated him, but no matter what it was, this was a step too far and he earned his early trip to the locker room. As for the Nets, they were already on cruise control up big on Detroit, so Durant’s absence for the rest of the fourth wasn’t a big deal overall, it just will require KD to dip into his checkbook for a fine from the league on Monday.

LGBTQ+ Advocate Jordyn Pollack Shares His Guide to Denver, Colorado

Advocate, influencer, and entrepreneur Jordyn Pollack knows the power of representation. At just 30 years old, he co-owns a CBD company called Ziggy’s Naturals. The wellness brand, which launched only three years ago, focuses most of its efforts on uplifting the LGBTQ+ community.

“We feel there needs to be more representation within the communities that I’m proudly a part of,” says Pollack. “Being a transgender male myself, it was important for me to show LGBTQ+ representation through our company.”

Before shifting to CBD, Pollack first found success working in cannabis. And considering that Colorado was one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana, moving to one of the state’s most happening cities, Denver, made natural sense. Fortunately for Pollack, the move gave him more than just new opportunities for work — he fell in love with the city’s access to nature, elevated food scene, and inclusive community.

While living in Denver, Pollack spent his free time finding the must-try restaurants, exploring the surrounding hiking trails, and rocking out at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Making him an excellent host to guide us through a trip to the “Mile High City.”

Check out Pollack’s top picks for where to stay, play, party, and eat in Denver, Colorado, below.

WHY DENVER?

Pollack truly fell in love with Denver from the moment he landed and saw those mountain views. Denver is a place he says he’d love to call a permanent home someday, particularly for its abundance of beautiful hikes, hot springs, and fun things to do right outside the city.

Best time of the year to visit Denver?

Early Fall

My favorite time of the year is early fall. If you travel to Denver between August and October, you get to see all the beautiful leaves change colors and experience perfect weather — high 70s and low 40s!

If you’re lucky, you might even catch snow out in the mountains in October.

Where can adventurers find a great hike in Denver?

St. Mary’s Glacier

Jordyn Pollack

Any time I would have a friend visit Denver for the first time, I would take them to St. Mary’s Glacier. It’s a pretty short hike to St. Mary’s Lake, and the views are incredible with snow on the mountains year-round. It’s also only about 30 to 45 minutes outside the city.

If you have a full day to spend hiking, then I would suggest checking out Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Best LGBTQ+ friendly bar in Denver?

X Bar

Jordyn Pollack

There are a few gay bars in Denver, but my favorite is X Bar. I rarely go to clubs and bars, but the outdoor patio is super cool with a lot of spots for interesting photo opportunities. If you are in the LGBTQ+ community, just know that Denver holds a special place in its heart for you. The city has always made me feel safe and welcomed.

Where to get the best cheeseburger?

Sam’s No. 3 Diner

If you are in Denver, I highly suggest checking out Sam’s Diner! They have a huge menu with so much to offer. The burgers on the menu are amazing, and you have to try the pancakes! The sweet cream flavor is so tasty, you don’t even need syrup!

Favorite hotel in Denver?

Sheraton Downtown Denver

Jordyn Pollack

My favorite hotel in Denver is the Sheraton Downtown Denver! Views from its rooms look out over the whole city. It’s in a great location, within walking distance of the 16th Street Mall.

What’s one thing that everyone visiting Denver should experience?

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

If this is your first time visiting Denver, I suggest checking out Red Rocks Amphitheatre. My first visit to Denver was to see a Griz concert at Red Rocks, and it was an unforgettable experience. If you ever end up in Denver, I highly suggest planning to see a show at Red Rocks or at least going there for the views!

Also, check out Garden of the Gods and the views from Lookout Mountain. And do at least one hike while you’re out there!

The Best Halloween Costumes From Around The NBA

Halloween is a holiday where those who are into are often really into it. It’s not for everyone, but those who love scary movies, dressing up, or seasonal candies get fired up as the end of October rolls around. There are plenty of NBA players who fall into that category of those who are all about Halloween, and with October 31 landing on a Sunday this year, it meant a weekend of costumes, team parties, and players putting on some elaborate costumes to celebrate.

The Lakers, as a team, went the most all out as LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis all spared no expense with their costumes and makeup this year going as various scary movie villains.

Unsurprisingly, Robin Lopez and his significant other also spared no expense as Batman and The Penguin.

Damian Lillard had his whole family dressed up as the Flintstones.

Pascal Siakam got his Superbad on, dressingup as McLovin.

DeMar DeRozan rolled up for a travel day in a Furby head.

Tyrese Haliburton dressed as the Grinch, complete with his own Max.

The Pelicans came to their game on Saturday as the Average Joe’s from Dodgeball.

Dewayne Dedmon was a mechanic with an Elmo by his side.

Jim Acosta Ripped Fox For Airing Tucker Carlson’s Revisionist Jan. 6 Series: ‘Why Are You Doing This To Us?’

Republicans are big mad about the Capitol siege of Jan. 6. They aren’t angry it happened; they’re angry that its origins are being investigated. Despite their best efforts to stop it (while letting perpetrators rot), damning intel has already been made public, connecting multiple Trump allies, and the big guy himself, to the day’s grim events. Some on the right have been trying to simply ignore it. Others have attempted to whitewash it. Tucker Carlson even has a forthcoming “documentary” series that ties to do just that. And Jim Acosta is not having it.

On Saturday, the CNN reporter went off on the series, which promises to tell “The True Story Behind 1/6″ and which is scheduled to air on Fox Nation. (That’s right: It’s too hot for Fox News prime time.) Among its claims, as one interviewee puts it in a preview, is that “The left is hunting the right.” Acosta called it out for its BS.

“Tucker is calling his propaganda flick The Patriot Purge. It’s nothing more than Proud Boy porn,” Acosta railed. “And the worst part is that a major corporation in America, Fox, is bankrolling it. Now Fox is insisting Tucker’s manifesto will only be seen on its streaming service, Fox Nation. Please, no matter how you slice it, the Murdoch family, which controls Fox, is cashing in as American democracy is being set ablaze.”

Acosta also singled out the Murdoch family for letting a lie-strewn letter from Trump, airing yet more voter fraud misinformation, be published in The Wall Street Journal.

“My question to the Murdochs is this: ‘Why are you doing this to us? Why are you doing this to America?’” he said.

Acosta also called Carlson “their prime-time pyromaniac,” and that they all “appear to be hellbent on dragging this country into a civil war. Jefferson Davis would be proud.”

You can watch Acosta vent in the video above.

Paul McCartney Joined The Foo Fighters To Play ‘Get Back’ At The Rock Hall Of Fame Induction

Dave Grohl is already known as one of the most lovable, genuine rockers in the industry, but he really got to top it all off last night by pairing up with the guy who occupies that role in the generation right above him. Grohl and the rest of The Foo Fighters had the chance to perform “Get Back” with Paul McCartney himself during The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony, where McCartney did the honors of inducting the band into the hall.

Interestingly enough, McCartney found a lot of parallels between what has happened throughout his life and what has gone on with Grohl. “We had a great time with our groups, but then eventually tragedy happened, and my group broke up,” McCartney said. “The same happened with Dave: His group broke up under tragic circumstances. And so then the question is, what do you do now?” he said. “And we both were presented with that question. In my case, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll make an album where I play all the instruments myself.’ So I did that. Dave’s group broke up — what’s he do? He makes an album where he plays all the instruments himself. Do you think this guy’s stalking me?”

Stay till the end of his speech to catch Paul’s expert dropping of the F bomb. Jokes aside, it was a brilliant introduction for such a great band that is a massive part of modern rock history. Check out the speech above and clips of their performance with McCartney below.

A Jan. 6 Perpetrator And ‘Influencer’ Thought She Would Avoid Jail Time Because She’s ‘Blonde’ And Has ‘White Skin’

Donald Trump may be doing all he can to avoid punishment for helping incite the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but the supporters who took part aren’t so lucky. Hundreds of people have been arrested for their role in the failed insurrection, and some of them are playing ball, even if it means incriminating their favorite former president. And then there’s Jenna Ryan, the “influencer” who documented her exploits online on that fateful day, and who was sure she was above the law because she was blonde and white.

As per HuffPost, prosecutors are seeking 60 days in prison for Ryan, a life coach and real estate broker from Fresno, Texas who took a private plane to D.C. the day of Joe Biden’s certification. She took pictures of herself standing next to broken windows, Facebook livestreamed herself inside the Capitol building, chanted “hang Mike Pence,” kicked some journalists’ media equipment around, and generally made it very, very easy for prosecutors to prosecute her. Which is what they’re doing.

Did Ryan think she could get off scot-free? She sure did. Among the evidence prosecutors are using against her is a tweet where she wrote, straight-up, that she would never go to jail because she has “blonde hair white skin a great job a great future.”

“A defendant who believes she is immune from strict punishment because of her race and physical appearance may reoffend because the consequences for wrongdoing will never, in the defendant’s mind, be severe even when severity is merited,” the prosecutors wrote. “Perhaps the most compelling need for specific deterrence arises from the defendant’s misguided belief that she is above the law, or at least insulated from incarceration.”

Feds also didn’t appreciate that she was hawking her real estate business while she was carousing inside the Capitol, telling people, “You guys, will you believe this? I am not messing around. When I come to sell your house, this is what I will do. I will f*cking sell your house.”

That is, she will “f*cking sell your house” after a likely stint in the slammer. Ryan will be sentenced on Thursday.

Harry Styles Wore A Dorothy Costume And Covered ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ For His ‘Harryween’ Show

There’s nothing on the planet like a Harry Styles live show. Ok, well, I’m not speaking from personal experience because I’ve yet to see him myself, but based on the way people travel around the world for his shows, and the clips we’ve all seen, it looks like a pretty glorious time. And that would be amped up to a whole new level on a holiday, right? After announcing the dates for his Love On Tour shows, Harry also let fans know that Halloween night, October 30th, was going to be dubbed “Harryween” and would be a special show.

Along with including Orville Peck on the bill (see him and his crew decked out to the nines above), Harry himself opted to get into costume for the special occasion, becoming Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz and even going so far as to sing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” during his set. Was he rocking ruby red slippers when he did it? Why absolutely he was. Check out a clip from the cover below:

Possibly the only way he could’ve made that better was to bring out Jenny Lewis, who has been opening him on most dates, to do the cover as a duet? But there’s always next year…

Falcons Receiver Calvin Ridley Will Step Away From Football To ‘Focus On My Mental Wellbeing’

The Atlanta Falcons entered Sunday’s divisional matchup with the Panthers without their top receiver, as Calvin Ridley was a late scratch due to personal reasons. It’s the second time Ridley has stepped away from the team to deal for personal reasons, as he didn’t make the trip to London earlier this year.

During the game, Ridley released a statement further explaining the situation, and while he didn’t provide specifics, he did note that he would be stepping away from football to take care of his “mental wellbeing.”

Hopefully Ridley is able to get whatever he needs to taken care of off of the field so he can be in the right mental space to play on Sundays again, as he has steadily emerged as one of the league’s best receivers — and his presence was a significant reason why the Falcons were willing to accommodate a Julio Jones trade this offseason. As Ridley notes in his statement, the Falcons have given him the time and space to take care of himself, which is not always the case in professional sports, but as more players have spoken up about mental health battles they’ve faced, it has become more common for teams to provide time and resources to players who need it.
