In 2006, the Miami Hurricanes football team was struck by tragedy when star defensive lineman Bryan Pata was shot and killed outside his apartment. Pata figured to be the latest in a long line of Miami linemen who went on to star in the NFL, and his murder had gone unsolved for 15 years.
However, on Thursday, Pata’s teammate at the time, Rashaun Jones, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder (Jones is wearing 38 and kneeling by the mural for Pata on the field at a game in the above picture). The arrest came less than a year after an ESPN deep dive into the murder revealed Jones had been listed as a suspect privately by Miami police but never publicly. Jones and Pata had apparently been feuding, per arrest records, with the two getting into a fight prior to the shooting and Pata having told his brother, Edwin, that Jones had threatened to shoot him in the head (via the Miami Herald).
Detectives investigated a host of people, including Pata’s ex-girlfriend, Jada Brody, and her twin brother, who was in Boston at the time. Jada Brody had been inside the apartment during the shooting.
But investigators learned that Jones, who had been involved with Pata’s girlfriend, had been feuding with Pata in the months before the killing. Pata, who was considerably larger than Jones, had bested him in a fight, authorities said.
Pata had also told his brother, Edwin Pata, that Jones had also threatened to shoot him in the head, according to an arrest warrant released Thursday.
Cell phone data showed that, while Jones had insisted in 2006 that he was at home during the shooting, his cell phone pinged off a tower near Pata’s apartment at the time of the shooting, and a witness had seen him leaving Pata’s apartment complex not long after (although there was no eye witness to the shooting itself). Jones has denied involvement in the shooting, but reportedly changed his cell phone number and skipped a mandatory team meeting following Pata’s killing.
The arrest may bring closure to the Pata family after 15 years of not knowing what happened to the 22-year-old who was on the verge of achieving his NFL dream — Edwin Pata told the Herald the news brought “mixed emotions.”
Hard as it is to believe, Nicolas Winding Refn’s indie noir film Drive — starring Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt man who moonlights as a getaway driver — turns 10 this year. At the time, the movie’s soundtrack earned as much critical acclaim as Drive itself, with a synthy score from Cliff Martinez and song selections from The Chromatics (“Tick Of The Clock”), College featuring Electric Youth (“A Real Hero”), and Kavinsky’s strangled-sounding “Nightcall.”
Now, the soundtrack is getting 10th anniversary reissue on October 8 via Invada Records and Lakeshore Records. The package will contain brand-new artwork and packaging in three variants: Stateside retail buyers will get “Neon Noir Splatter,” while international retail customers will get “Marbled Pink” / “Marbled Blue.” If you’re buying on Invada’s web store, you’ll get an exclusive four-sided picture disc.
“The words ‘hit’ and ‘soundtrack’ seldom appear in the same sentence,” acknowledged Martinez in a press release. “The score to Drive is the closest I’ve ever come to having anything of the sort. And I wish I knew the recipe for its success as no one is more eager than me to repeat the experience.”
Look for the Drive 10th anniversary vinyl reissue on October 8 via Invada Records and Lakeshore Records. Pre-order it here.
Dustin Johnson entered the 2021 PGA Tour season riding high, having dominated the back half of the 2020 season, winning the Tour Championship, the Players, and the Masters all in the span of three months to vault to No. 1 in the world.
The 2021 season didn’t follow the same script, as he missed the cut at the first two majors, the Masters and the PGA, and just couldn’t quite find that same level. However, as the calendar gets set to shift to fall once again, Johnson is starting to show some of the form of a year ago, posting a top-10 at The Open and some more solid finishes recently, hoping to peak at the right time once again. Johnson enters the FedEx Cup Playoffs 17th in points (still No. 2 in the World Ranking), needing to make up some ground to have a chance at going back-to-back for the $15 million prize, and is one of two players (alongside Collin Morikawa) to be officially locked in to the U.S. Ryder Cup team for the late September event.
Prior to this week’s Playoff opener at the Northern Trust, Johnson spoke with Uproxx on behalf of BodyArmor to talk about this season, when he felt he started to find his game again, the narrow margin between winning and not contending on the PGA Tour, the Ryder Cup and more.
To start, you’re up in New Jersey for the Northern Trust. How are you feeling about that where your game is as you come into the Playoffs?
The game’s starting to get back to the form that, you know, it’s really close to what it was last year around this time. Obviously this year’s been a little slower than I would have liked but there’s three really big tournaments coming up that can change that in an instant.
You had a top-10 at The Open. Did you feel like you kind of found something there? Obviously the majors hadn’t gone, as you’d hoped leading up to that.
Yeah, started playing a little better at The Open. It still wasn’t quite as good as I would have liked to and then a couple weeks ago in Memphis, you know, I felt like I really played well there. A few mistakes here and there that cost me for possibly having a chance to win or winning, but I felt like I played more like — it was a lot more solid. Even though I didn’t have my best stuff, I was still playing, playing pretty well. So I’m definitely pleased with where the game is. I’m starting to see a lot more consistency, day in and day out. and that’s kind of the key for me to playin well and contending each and every week is just getting that consistency back with the golf swing, with a shot shape. So, definitely excited about the playoffs.
I know for me, when I’m playing and I fall into some bad habits, it’s one of those things where it can be tough to kind of see those for yourself. What’s your process when you start feeling like you’re falling into some of those habits and not seeing that consistency? How do you take that step back and work with your coach and find those things to get back in that rhythm and get back to where you know you can get to?
Yeah, I mean, it takes time, that’s the only thing. Especially at this level, it’s not, you know, even though you might not be playing good or hitting it as good as you like, for me, it’s not that as far off, but it’s just that little, little bit off. It’s the difference between … three good rounds during the week doesn’t win you any golf tournaments, you know, you’ve got to play four good rounds. That’s kind of how I’ve felt like I’ve played all year really. Play three pretty good rounds and then one not so go one, and it’s kind of how it’s been all year. So, to put the four rounds together, you just got to be a little more consistent. But, yeah, I feel like I just haven’t had my best stuff this year, but like I said I’ve worked hard on my game lately, it’s starting to feel really good, and obviously this is a good time of year for it to feel good.
Obviously there’s the playoffs, but then you also have the Ryder Cup coming up at Whistling Straits. You recently locked in that you’re going to be there. What are you looking forward to most about getting back to Ryder Cup play after a year where we were supposed to have it in couldn’t?
Yeah, the Ryder Cup’s one of my favorite events that we play in. Obviously it’s such a cool event. So, making those teams is always really important to me. You know I love the team aspect, so always look forward to that event, whether it be the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, but obviously the Ryder Cup this year it’s something I’m really looking forward to. Obviously trying to try to get that Cup back, but I think we’re gonna have a great team. Playing a Western Straits, it’s a golf course that I really like and had some success there. So, yeah I’m really looking forward to it. Obviously, the atmosphere at a Ryder Cup is something that you just can’t describe it right. It’s unbelievable.
You mention Whistling being a place that you’re comfortable with and I think most of the guys on the US team will be, and how important do you think that’s gonna be? Obviously there were some struggles in France on a course that I don’t think a lot of you guys were as familiar with and coming back home and into a course that you guys have played in in major competition and in high stress situations, how do you think that that can help you guys?
Yeah, I think it’ll be good. Obviously, we’re going to have to play well if we want to win. I mean, the other team’s going to be good. It’s a golf course that — you know, obviously, on paper, we should be the favorites, but that doesn’t matter. I mean, I think the teams are gonna be really evenly matched. And if we want to bring the Cup back then, we’re gonna have to play some good golf. But yeah, it is a golf course that’s going to be set up pretty well for our team, and, yeah, I’m just looking forward to it. Obviously it’s just such a fun week, you know, hanging out with the guys all week, the captains. I mean, you get a ton of fans out there, just the atmosphere is incredible. So, it’s a lot of fun playing for your country, and I love it.
You’re now one of the elder statesman and veterans of the team and you’re gonna have some young guys this year — Collin Morikawa, we know, is going to be making his debut. What are the things that you can impart some wisdom to them about playing in that event, because it’s a different pacing and then the team aspect on top of that.
Yeah, I mean, the young guys, they’re very talented, very good players. So not going to need much. If they got some questions, obviously we’ll try to answer them. But we got a great captain and great assistant captains, so you know I’m sure they can answer all the questions, but yeah I’ll be happy to help any of them if they need it. But it’s just one of those weeks where you just want to relax, have a good time, and enjoy it because it’s one of those things that’s so special, you just want to make sure you enjoy it.
And as these young guys come in — you’re partnered with BodyArmor and you’ve been with them for a while — how has your approach to nutrition and taking care of your body changed over your years on Tour? And how much more deliberate do you have to be now about what you’re putting into your body to as you think more about longevity as you near 40 and wanting to continue to play it at a high level?
Yeah, I mean it’s really important. BodyArmor, obviously they make an unbelievable sports drink, by far the best as far as, if you’re gonna put something in your body, you want to make sure that it’s clean and it’s the right stuff and it’s going to help you achieve what you want to do. Which BodyArmor does, especially with all the electrolytes, there’s no artificial sweeteners or flavors, so it’s something that was an easy partnership for me. I use it on daily basis, so that was easy.
But yeah, as far as nutrition, I’ve really gotten a lot better about what I eat, what I put in my body when I’m training and pretty much all the time. I like food a lot, so I enjoy eating just about everything, but I’m really cautious about … I have a chef and he makes unbelievable food, but super healthy and you definitely can tell the difference. And so yeah, as you get older you want to try and stay fit and continue to get stronger and still swing the club pretty hard, nutrition and and hydration are huge parts of that.
Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings was long believed to be Alex Trebek’s chosen successor for when the beloved host succumbed to his battle with cancer, but fans of the classic trivia game show were stunned when executive producer Mike Richards was chosen as the new permanent host. Since that decision, a wave of controversy has plagued Richards, and he found himself once again having to defend past remarks after a new report from The Ringer uncovered even more troubling remarks.
The report also delved into Richards’ reported undue influence over the selection process, which prompted a response from Jennings, who is taking a diplomatic approach to essentially being shafted by Richards.
“Obviously I’m disappointed with how this process played out, but I’d rather look ahead,” Jennings told The Ringer. “I plan to be with the show as long as they’ll have me, no matter who’s hosting.”
Jennings is being especially gracious because, as The Ringer reveals, he was the host who had his guest stint curtailed after Richards apparently exaggerated a “scheduling conflict” to get himself on the show:
Jennings taped six weeks of episodes before a minor conflict with an upcoming tape day emerged. As The Ringer previously reported, sources say the show’s production staff was able to accommodate the conflict, only for Richards to step in and insist on hosting instead. When the time came to tape the preamble to his first episode, Richards blamed COVID-19 for the change and exaggerated the nature of Jennings’s conflict.
As of now, Sony Pictures Television is sticking with Richards as the new host of Jeopardy!, but it’ll be curious to see how the situation continues as more of his questionable behavior has been brought to light.
HBO and HBO Max launch into the month of September with a star-studded prestige drama, a terrifying horror flick, a new season of a comic book favorite, and plenty of classic blockbusters to keep movie lovers happy this Fall.
First up is Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain’s marriage drama, a limited series that’s definitely angling for some early awards season buzz. Then there’s James Wan’s nightmarish film starring Annabelle Wallis. And finally, a new season of Doom Patrol promises more ridiculous superhero hijinks and maybe some wild time travel escapades.
Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) HBO and HBO Max this month.
Scenes from a Marriage (HBO Limited Series Premiere 9/12)
Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain star in this English-language remake of a classic Swedish miniseries from Ingmar Bergman about the dissolution of a marriage between a successful lawyer (Chastain) and her psychology professor husband (Isaac). It looks to be more of a masterclass in acting from two stars at the height of their careers than anything else, but that’s reason enough to watch for us.
Malignant (Warner Bros. Film Premiere 9/10)
James Wan’s latest effort is this terrifying cerebral thriller about a woman (Annabelle Wallis) whose nightmares become reality. Wallis plays Madison, a woman who has visions of grisly murders and other haunting experiences, who slowly discovers her waking dreams have become reality. Don’t expect to sleep at night after this one.
Doom Patrol (HBO Max Original Season 3 Premiere 9/23)
Season three of the terrific HBO Max comic series returns although where and when are irreverent superheroes are is still anyone’s guess. A bunch of new villains and questionable allies pop up, familial drama takes center stage, and some trippy time travel throws everything into whack this season.

Sweet Life: Los Angeles: Season 1 (HBO Max series) — The WarnerMedia streaming service is keeping up with its summer of unscripted content that also includes The Hype and FBoy Island. In particular, this show follows a group of young, Black, and ambitious mid-20 somethings while they pursue dreams. Of course, those dreams not only happen to be professional but also involve loyalty and love. The quarter-life mark is a milestone unlike any other, and in South Los Angeles, this group of long-time friends comes together for a three-episode drop, which will be followed by more episodes running through September 2.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC, 8:00 & 8:30pm) — Season 8 begins for the law-enforcement comedy that must confront several new realities while still attempting to stay, you know, funny. The ongoing pandemic and the recent round of protests against police brutality will stay fresh in everyone’s mind as the Andy Samberg-starring show takes a final lap. This week, a double dose of episodes sees understaffing issues plague the precinct, causing real headaches for Capt. Holt. Meanwhile, Rosa’s got a houseguest, and Jake and Amy struggle to juggle work and family.
Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes: (Netflix film) — This documentary shines a light on the Dennis Nilsen, who became one of Britain’s most infamous serial killers in the mid 1980s. The project gathers up over 250 hours of previously undisclosed private recordings from Nilsen himself, all found within his own personal archive. He chose his victims (young men) carefully, yet he was able to easily hide his murders for five years due to mass unemployment that sent many to London, where they found themselves without money or recourse. Not only does the film dive into the voice of Nilsen himself but also survivors, law enforcement, and bereaved families.
The Hype: Season 1 (HBO Max series) — Streetwear professionals finally get a proper reality-competition show that aims to create a collision of streetwear, culture, and business. Cardi B’s judging, along with Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Ferg, Dapper Dan, and Bobby Hundreds. All involved aim to mentor the contestants while imparting their specialized visions toward the visionary contestants. From fashion to music to art to lifestyle and everywhere in between, the creativity here should be off the hook, and maybe some of that coolness will rub off on us.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 2 (Paramount+ series) — This animated series from Rick and Morty writer (and Solar Opposites creator) Mike McMahan takes things to the year 2380 (after the original Star Trek beginning in 2265), where the U.S.S. Cerritos aren’t the heroes that you’re expecting. These are junior officers who are not pleased at their lack of power while confronting bizarre alien anomalies like enormous bugs and other such comedic-slanted creatures. This violent show’s got a PG-13-like feel.
Titans: Season 3 (HBO Max series) — These young heroes from across the DC universe return for more adventure, this time in Gotham City where new threats lurk and old friends shall reunite.
Late Night With Seth Meyers — Cecily Strong, Patton Oswalt, Jeff Bowders
Foo Fighters are set to receive a special Global Icon Award at the 2021 MTV VMAs, which are scheduled to go down on September 12 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Dave Grohl & Co., who are up for three awards this year (Best Rock, Best Choreography, and Best Cinematography) will also perform at the event. This is the first-of-its-kind award for the VMAs, with the Foo Fighters being honored for their “unparalleled career and continued impact and influence [that] has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond.” Good for you, Foo!
Just days before, the network released this year’s nominees for the 2021 VMAs, with Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion leading the pack. Bieber holds seven nominations, including nods for Video Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, and Best Pop. Megan follows behind him with six nominations for categories like Video Of The Year and Song Of The Year. This year’s MTV VMAs is set to return to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the first time since 2013. It kicks off September 12 and organizers expect to invite musicians and fans to join the event in-person.
As the world waits for Saweetie’s debut album Pretty B*tch Music to finally be ready for release, the Bay Area raprentreneur is making the most of her existing projects to hold fans over, dropping a sultry video for her and Kendra Jae’s April collaboration “Seesaw.” Although it’s Kendra’s song, it first appeared on Saweetie’s Pretty Summer Playlist Vol. 1 mixtape, which Saweetie released this spring as a placeholder for her album.
The video, which features a cameo appearance from Inglewood-native Dreamville rapper Cozz, sees Kendra lighting furniture on fire as she sits with him on a sofa in a bedazzled bodysuit. Elsewhere in the video, Kendra and Saweetie pose and mug the camera in a plush purple convertible and share a ride on a mechanical bull. There’s also some nifty choreography with Kendra and her dance team on various colored sets.
Although Pretty Summer came out months ago, it’s proven to have some long legs after she released videos for “Baby Mama Coochie” by BbyAfricka and “Risky” featuring Drakeo The Ruler. The unplanned compilation EP has given Saweetie fans plenty to listen to as she prepares to release PBM, which she says is finally ready and deserves to be taken seriously. Hopefully, it’ll be out while her McDonald’s meal is still on the market, proving that the Icy Queen can take advantage of all the synergy she’s been building lately.
Watch the “Seesaw” video above.
Saweetie is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
No, that’s not a typo. Today’s UPROXX Sessions guest Lil Duece really spells his name like that — which actually benefits him on searches. Today, the Inglewood native delivers a laid-back performance of his signature single “Outside (Tiny Yung Freestyle),” leaning heavily into his trademark LA-inflected flow over the track’s swinging, saxophone-laden instrumental.
Duece might not be a household name outside the confines of Los Angeles County, but in his hometown, he’s a rising star, turning in standout guest verses alongside fellow Angelenos like 1TakeQuan (the crewmate of another Sessions alum, 1TakeJay), 2 Eleven, Rucci, and Skeme, while songs like “Judo” and his June 2021 collaborative mixtape with Shoreline Mafia’s Rob Vicious have raised his profile in recent years. Meanwhile, the Lyrical Lemonade-approved “Outside,” with its region-agnostic production, has provided a near-perfect vehicle to carry his obviously deeply-rooted rap style and LA gang life references to the nation at large.
Watch Lil Duece perform “Outside (Tiny Yung Freestyle)” for UPROXX Sessions above.
UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. In an either an exciting or extremely jarring new development, depending on how dystopian your views are, Disney is reportedly hard at work creating essentially sentient versions of its animatronic robots. Think a walking Groot that not only comes out to greet you, but interacts with you and reacts accordingly if you’re not paying attention to it. And if that sounds like something straight out of an episode of Westworld, New York Times writer Brook Barnes saw the three-foot tall robotic Groot with his own eyes.
In a new profile that required security clearance and secret meetings in abandoned warehouses, Barnes broke down Disney’s ambitious plans to evolve its animatronic offerings, which already took a massive leap forward with its Stuntronic Spider-Man that was recently revealed at Disney’s Avengers Campus attraction. The massive multi-million dollar expenditure is all in the name of captivating today’s tech-savvy kids. Via NYT:
Disney attractions have always required the suspension of disbelief: Those are real flying galleons in Peter Pan’s Flight, not plastic ride vehicles on a rail. But advances in movie imagery — computer-generated animation, the blending of live-action footage with elaborate digital effects — have put pressure on Disney to make its robots more convincing.
“You know how Elsa moves,” said Kathryn Yancey, an Imagineering show mechanical engineer, referring to the “Frozen” princess. “Kids have watched the movie over and over, maybe even in the car that morning. So our animatronic Elsa also has to be fast and lyrical. She can’t be lumbering.”
However, Disney currently has no plans of replacing its cast members who play live-action versions of Cinderella, Princess Jasmine, etc. The new push in robotics will focus on more “extreme” characters from Marvel and Star Wars, like the Hulk, because that’s what we definitely need a sentient robot of. Should be great.
