‘Simple Works’: How A Lesson Learned As A Rookie Makes Derrick White A Perfect Fit In Boston

Derrick White(1024x450)

Derrick White has taken an incredible journey to reach the NBA Finals as a starter and key piece of the Boston Celtics.

He played three years at D-II University of Colorado-Colorado Springs before transferring to Boulder for his senior year, becoming an All-Pac-12 player in his lone season at the University of Colorado. That season turned him into NBA Draft prospect, where he got taken 29th overall by the San Antonio Spurs. White played 3-plus years for the Spurs and emerged as a solid starter before being traded at the deadline in 2022 to the Celtics, as they looked to bolster their backcourt rotation.

Since joining the Celtics, White has been a phenomenal fit as the point guard alongside stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the wing. White is a terrific defender and has steadily grown more comfortable in a supporting role offensively, both as a creator for others and a knockdown shooter, boasting a career-best 39.6 three-point percentage this season. White’s ascent is remarkable, but it is not a surprise that he’s continued to add to his game and became a winning player.

His journey has been defined by continued growth, from his time at Colorado Springs all the way to Boston, and it comes from an internal desire to always seek out ways to get better. Back in October of 2021, I sat down with White in San Antonio for a cover story that never came to fruition for a handful of reasons, one of which being his trade to the Celtics. Ahead of the NBA Finals, I went back to that conversation where we discussed the things he was focused on to grow as a player and a leader, to see how he got from being a hopeful breakout candidate to a key cog in a Finals team.

White was going into that season as the most tenured veteran on the Spurs, even as he was just entering his fifth year, and he was rapidly realizing the need to grow up as a leader while still figuring out his exact place in the league. He credited DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge as examples of the kind of quiet leadership he looked to emulate, as those two led by example. When it came time to speak up, they made sure to do it the right way.

“They just demand respect by what they do day in and day out. Every time there’s a game, they’re ready to go, they do what they need to do to help us win,” White explained. “So, you definitely demand respect that way, and if you’re doing well on the court and you’re doing what you’re supposed to do — you’re being coachable and stuff like that — it’s easy to get respect from your teammates. I mean, DeMar, LA, they didn’t say a whole lot, but they had the whole locker room’s attention and every now and then they’ll pull you over and give you some things to work on or look for. Just stuff like that, that I can put in my game and help the young guys out.”

While quiet, White is hyper-competitive and is always looking for ways to improve, whether that’s in basketball or in any of his hobbies. One of his life’s goals is to bowl a 300. His best score at the time was a 212, which he noted was “right there,” and “I’ve done it in Wii, I can do it in real life.” White called bowling a 300 in Wii Bowling “a huge day for me,” because even in video game bowling, he spent a long time tinkering with form, trying four different methods until he found one he liked (the low hook).

That internal drive that leads a man to try four different Wii Bowling forms also translates to the hardwood. White knew that to stick as a starter in the league, he had to improve as a shooter in a variety of ways. The year prior to our sitdown he saw a major uptick in three-point attempts in the Bubble, as part of a concerted effort to modernize his game. That offseason in 2021, he was trying to get more comfortable letting it fly from deep both on and off the ball, understanding his path to success in the league depended on it.

“I mean, that’s the way the league’s going right now. You gotta get with the times and get a lot more consistent with that,” White said. “So, shooting a lot of threes a lot of different ways — off the dribble, pin downs — cause I’m playing on the ball, off the ball. Trying to work on all different types of shots and be consistent getting that percentage up and add that element to my game.”

While he had a down year in 2021-22 in both San Antonio and Boston, adjusting to new roles with each team, that work has paid off the last two years. He’s become a legitimate threat shooting from deep both off the dribble and in catch-and-shoot situations. Beyond the shooting, his offensive playmaking as a whole has continued to impress in Boston, which has been invaluable for a team that’s long sought steady-handed point guard play to alleviate some of the creative burden on Tatum and Brown. While White may not be an elite ball-handler or have the deepest bag of moves and finishes, he exemplifies a lesson he learned his rookie year in San Antonio, something he’s long tried to keep at the front of his mind all these years later.

“My rookie year, one of the coaches told me, ‘Simple works.’ So, just try to keep that mindset that the simple play works,” White said. “You don’t need to have 18 different crossovers and stepbacks, you just need to make the simple play and that’ll work for you. I just try to keep that mindset each game and take what the defense gives you. I never try to go out and attack right away, just take what they give me and then take that and whatever simple play it is.”

The player that epitomized that “simple works” mantra in San Antonio when White arrived in 2017 was 40-year-old Manu Ginobili, who provided the hard evidence on the floor to get White to buy into that thought.

“I learned that from Manu,” White recalled. “Manu wasn’t doing crazy things — I mean, he was 40, which is crazy. He wasn’t doing nothing special. Just simple moves, like catch-and-go, and it was working for him.”

Watching White, you can tell that message remains seared into his brain, and for a Boston team that has talent up-and-down the roster, having a point guard who wants to make the simple play is an ideal fit. And, with his expanded skillset as a scorer and creator, he has more options in front of him for what defines making the right play.

As the Finals arrive and the Celtics look to finally take home a title with Brown and Tatum leading the way, White will get a chance to put that quiet leadership he learned in San Antonio to work. With the overall talent advantage, the challenge for Boston may very well be not pressing and continuously making that simple play, and White will help set that tone and calm things down as the point guard.

Judd and and Grace are still together despite the addition of Wyatt to their family, but Judd ended season 4 with the decision to retire early to be by his son’s side after he was left partially paralyzed following a serious biking accident.

Though we may not know what is in store for all of season five, TV Insider did reveal that season 5 will begin with a three-episode train derailment. “The scale and spectacle of the train derailment and the arduousness of shooting it. I mean, I love it,” Lowe said about it. “I find it really challenging. I love the challenge of it, but it is a brutal, backbreaking grind and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I can do that. Let’s go. I turn 60, let’s f**king go.’ Do you know what I mean? I get off on it, and so the more painful, the crawling, the smoke, the carnage, it’s really fun.”

Plain White T’s Reacted To Drake & Snowd4y’s Confusing ‘Wah Gwan Delilah,’ And It’s So Wholesome

drake
Getty Image

Drake has found himself at the center of another confusing AI conversation, except this one probably won’t prompt legal action from Tupac Shakur’s estate like “Taylor Made Freestyle” did. Earlier this week, Snowd4y posted “Wah Gwan Delilah” featuring Drake — or claiming to feature Drake, at least — on SoundCloud. Drake posted the song on his Instagram Story, further clouding whether the song is real or AI-generated.

Regardless, it exists. And Plain White T’s have thoughts.

On Wednesday, June 5, Plain White T’s posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing the band reacting to “Wah Gwan Delilah.” The video is captioned, “The T’s were too stunned to speak…” In the 42-second video, lead singer Tom Higgenson can’t suppress his displeased facial expressions. He bobs along to the familiar instrumentals but shakes his head before saying, “That’s not Drake. It’s crazy that everybody thinks that it’s real. It seems like it’s very obvious. I don’t know, but it’s cool. Whatever.”

If you haven’t yet figured it out, “Wah Gwan Delilah” is a cover of Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah,” the band’s biggest hit that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2007. To really drive home the early-2000s of it all, Higgenson has confirmed that the song was inspired by a real girl named Delilah whom he kept in touch with through AOL Instant Messenger.

‘Silo’ Season 2: Everything To Know About Rebecca Ferguson’s Next Sci-Fi Trip Underground (Update For June 2024)

Rebecca Ferguson Silo Apple TV+
Apple TV / Merle Cooper

Rebecca Ferguson kicked butt in the Mission: Impossible movies, so it only makes sense that she would receive her own leading action role. Of course, “action” isn’t the first word that comes to mind when it comes to Hugh Howey’s novels, but this series has capitalized upon Ferguson’s physical capabilities for Silo. If you’ve seen the first season, then you damn well know that the power-generator-repair episode stands in the all-time greats of nail-biting, adrenaline pumping displays of wiry physicality with Ferguson’s Juliette risking her life to bring the lights back on for thousands of undergrounders.

The overall feel of the series thus far has been more hands-on and less sci-fi than viewers initially might expect, but that could change when Season 2 begins to stream. What can we expect to happen next? The post-apocalyptic Apple TV+ series — adapted from Howey’s riveting and at-times infuriating books (Wool, Shift, and Dust) — has thus far churned towards sleeper status, but that’s the nature of the first book as well. This character-based adventure is about to start hopping back and forth between silos, which was suggested in the first season finale when the exiled Juliette emerged above ground and became the first person to disappear over the hill. Will the second season directly adhere to Howey’s next book, though? That’s a conundrum.

Plot

As readers are aware, the second book, Shift, is where things truly go off the rails with this saga. The narrative hops back and forth in time to follow a new protagonist, Donald, as well as a crew of workers who — without spoiling the book — inhabit another silo. Of course, the first season ended in a cliffhanger that showed a field full of silos, and Juliette does not appear right away in the second book, so it remains to be seen whether showrunner Graham Yost will follow the books or jump ahead in the source material to where Juliette becomes the main focus again. We haven’t heard any concrete casting news on Howey’s characters of the second novel, so let’s just say that Apple TV+ is doing a fantastic job of keeping a lid on such developments.

What do we know, though? Rebecca Ferguson told Collider that the show will have a definitive ending point that has been determined. Also, she suggests that there will not be big surprises for those who have read the books, so perhaps that means we will see those other characters soon after all:

“I mean, the books are the books, and the three books are divided into four seasons. So I believe — unless any Apple person is gonna jump on — I think we’re absolutely fine to say Season 1 we’ve done, Season 2 is shot and coming out, and we’re now looking at green-lighting Seasons 3 and 4. I think we would film them maybe together, and that will be the end.”

Additionally, Ferguson has let fly that the second season gets really “wet” and “intense” for Juliette, so it sounds like a key sequence of the book will be showcased for more action. The architecture of the show appears to be set in stone by Yost, and second-season filming is complete, so I’m hoping that they get the casting right. There has been a huge vote of confidence from Hugh Howey, however, who has teased that he has seen the second season “and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen.” Now we need to know what Howey thinks of Common’s leather jacket (Common has already given his answer on the subject), and fair warning….

POTENTIAL SPOILERS might be found in the casting section below.

YEP, SPOILERS.

Cast

In the book, Juliette drains the heck out of Silo 17, but more importantly, she meets Solo, who has been living alone (as far as he knows) for decades after his silo experienced catastrophe. The casting of Solo would have been an enormous feat that needs to be hit just right because Howey fans love the guy. Since Apple TV+ is being so secretive about second-season casting for new characters, it’s worth hopping over to Reddit to see what people are obsessing about. Nominations over there include Steve Zahn or Jason Mantzoukas as Solo, which are honestly pretty good guesses. I’d also like to toss Walton Goggins into the figurative ring even though I damn well know that he’s too busy to join another show.

When it comes to Silo 1’s inhabitants or those who came before the apocalypse, Reddit is pulling hard for Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Erskine, Adam Scott as Donald, Jon Hamm as Senator Thurman, and Jessica Chastain as Anna. Hey, Alden Ehrenreich would make a fine Donald, too.

Naturally, we can expect to see more of Common’s ridiculous leather jacket as Sims and Tim Robbins as Bernard, but overall, we are receiving more Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette.

Release Date

Since filming has wrapped and the series is in post-production, surely Apple TV+ will make a release date official soon. In the meantime, Ferguson recently lamented, “We don’t have a release date. We have something we’re working towards. I have all 10 episodes of studio cuts, but then it’s grading VFX, and there’s so much that needs to be done. I think we’re hoping for a date, and I think we’re pushing for it.”

Trailer

Some actual footage would be welcomed by fans at any moment, but for now, here’s Ferguson and a red-carpet statement necklace telling Variety about how “wet” the next season will be.

How Many Episodes Are In ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 2?

ellie s2
hbo

House of the Dragon and The Last of Us have a lot in common: they’re both mega-popular, mega-expensive HBO series that are based on existing properties. Another similarity is reduced episode counts in their sophomore seasons: House of the Dragon went from 10 episodes to 8, while The Last of Us season 2 will be even shorter, at only seven episodes long.

Creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann explained why in an interview with Deadline. “The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”

He continued:

“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season 1 too. We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season 4.”

Mazin also hinted that season 2 will have a “quite big” episode. Maybe not feature length, but long enough to listen to a Linda Ronstadt song a few extra times. “I like generally hitting about an hour, it’s a great length, I love working in that format. What we don’t want to do is, say a season of seven episodes where each episode is 90 minutes; part of why we’re doing seven episodes is finding that nice line,” he said.

The Last of Us season 2 returns to HBO and Max in 2025.

How To Buy Tickets To Kendrick Lamar’s ‘The Pop Out — Ken & Friends’ Concert

kendrick lamar
Getty Image

If you’re in LA, odds are, you’re going to want tickets to Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming concert at the Forum. “The Pop Out — Ken & Friends” concert is slated for June 19 at 4 PM with PgLang and Free Lunch. You can find out how you can get tickets to the show below.

If you have a Cash App Card, you will have access to an exclusive presale on June 6, beginning at 10 AM. If not, you can participate in the general sale on Friday, June 7 at 10 AM. Of course, you can always try your luck after that on resale sites like SeatGeek, StubHub, and VividSeats.

You can find more information about the sales on Ticketmaster.com.

The Ken & Friends concert is the culmination of a strong year for Mr. Duckworth, as he secured his second solo Hot 100 No. 1 with the Drake diss track “Not Like Us.” The song also reportedly pulled in a little over a quarter of a million dollars, validating its status as one of the few times rap beef actually paid off for a participant.

Before that, Kendrick nabbed his third overall No. 1 with “Like That,” another song calling out Drake (I’m sensing a theme here), which appeared on Future and Metro Boomin’s joint album, We Don’t Trust You. So yeah, I’d say it’s been a good year all around for Kendrick Lamar, and now, he’s sharing the wealth with his hometown show.

‘Avatar 3’: Everything To Know So Far About James Cameron’s Threequel That Will Reveal Another Side Of Pandora

avatar
20th century studios

There is only one thing that James Cameron loves more than water, and that is a sequel. What happens when you combine the two? You get Avatar: The Way Of Water. Add in a couple billion bucks and then you have the currently untitled Avatar 3.

Cameron has been working on the third installment in the sci-fi franchise seemingly forever, though filming for the second and third movies took place simultaneously beginning in 2017. In September 2020, Cameron confirmed that the third film was “95% done” and revealed earlier this year that it’s “in the can.”

“We’re shooting pick-ups on 3, which is just filling in the last 2 or 3%, and we’ve also got live-action pick-ups in June, that’s another couple percent,” he told Screen Rant. Even though his math is a little off, he’s still optimistic. “We’ve got about a quarter of movie 4 in the can. We’re post on 3 and now doing the VFX, which is an enormous job. I’ll need every second between now and then to get it done.” It only took about four years to get the rest of the 4% done!! By this rate, we’ll get Avatar 4 by 2065. To Cameron’s credit, a lot of thees delays were not his fault.

Now that the movie is coming to life, here is everything you need to know about the upcoming sequel, which is NOT called The Seed Bearer, by the way.

Plot

The first two movies in the Avatar universe introduce fans to the lush world of Pandora, which is being threatened by humans who want to use the planet and its resources. In the second film, Sully has fully leaned into his Avatar life and raises his three children alongside Neytiri as they venture to the Metkayina oceanic clan in order to escape The Research Development Administration, aka the RDA, a.k.a. the humans of Earth.

The third film will explore the universe even more by showcasing the various cultures of Pandora — and not all of them are good. Cameron told French publication 20 Minutes that the film will explore “different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”

The film will also give Sully’s son Lo’ak a more prominent voice in the series. Cameron confirmed that there will be multiple narrators in the next movie. “I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what’s coming. Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie 1 and movie 2, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character, and movie 3 is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

Cast

The main crew will be returning, including Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, and Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge.

As for newbies, David Thewlis will portray a new character named Peylak, while Michelle Yeoh has signed on as Dr. Karina Mogue, a human scientist. Oona Chaplin will portray Varang, the leader of the “Ash People” clan.

Release Date

After nine (!!!) changed release dates, the current release date is December 19th 2025, but that could change.

Trailer

While we don’t have a trailer quite yet, James Cameron has confirmed that the film is basically done, so he could potentially drop footage any day now, but we probably won’t be seeing anything until later in the year.

Here is the trailer for the second installment, which is now on Disney+.
