Imagine if every school played this Kid President ‘pep talk’ before class.

This article originally appeared on 08.27.15

Wisdom comes with age, huh? Don’t try telling that to Kid President.

The kid’s on fire in this insightful and funny pep talk that we can all most definitely take something from.

Kid President doesn’t claim to know it all, but he does know a few things.

And I tell you what, if you wake up in the morning with at least one of these five things on your mind, I bet you’ll conquer your day. Kid President tested. Kid President approved.

1. You matter. Don’t let anyone make you think differently.

We are all unique and weird and amazing in our own ways. Sure you’ll have your ups and downs, but keep that head up. YOU matter.

It’s science, man! And also, you are great.

2. Being a bully is dumb. Don’t do it.

Be nice instead. It’ll take you further in life, and someday you’ll look back on the bullies that you’ve known and think, “They wasted so much time being horrible to others. No wonder they’re still living in their mom’s basement!”

Ain’t nobody got time for bullies.

3. History is made by ordinary people — like you and me and Justin Timberlake!

If you have an idea that you love, go for it. You never know what’ll happen. Maybe you’ll invent something or write the next hit song. It’s up to you!

Ordinary people who aren’t afraid to try (and fail sometimes, too!).

4. If you want to change the world, you’ll need to know about it first.

Life is one big school. Rule #1? You gotta show up! Listen, read, ask questions, and most importantly: Be present!

Eek. Can you imagine?

5. Is there a teacher or person in your life who inspires you? Let them know.

Don’t let those who’ve helped you in life go about their days not knowing it. Tell them how much they mean to you. Text them. Call them. Tell them in person. Heck, even write on their Facebook wall! It’ll make their day. Promise.

You heard the kid!

It’s true: No matter who you are, somebody is learning from you. Everybody is a teacher, and everybody is a student.

So what do you want to teach the world? What do you want to learn? Find out and go do it!

And maybe share this to inspire those around you to do the same. Because honestly, we are so much better when we’re being our very best together.

Let’s do it.

Tom DeLonge Says His Relationship With Mark Hoppus Improved Significantly After The Cancer Diagnosis

A few months ago, Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus revealed that he was battling cancer. Fortunately, most updates since then have been positive, like earlier this month when it was revealed that his chemotherapy treatment is complete. All this while, he has received support from Travis Barker and Tom DeLonge, the latter of whom just revealed that his and Hoppus’ relationship really improved after he learned about Hoppus’ cancer.

In a chat about Angels & Airwaves with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, DeLonge revealed that he just happened to learn about Hoppus’ cancer by chance, and that once he did, he and Hoppus started talking a lot more than they used to:

“The way the universe works is strange, because I reached out to Mark because I needed him to sign this piece of paper that had to do with my divorce. Only because of that call did I learn he had cancer. He told me on the phone. I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ And we weren’t really talking much at all, maybe once every couple of months, a little text here and there. But now, we talk multiple times a day. So it’s like we’ve been able to completely repair that friendship and really cut to the depth of who we are as people and what this is all about. And he’s had a really difficult time, but he’s doing really good right now, in the sense of where the cancer is gone, as far as we know, and the chemo worked really well. So now he’s healing up. I don’t think he’s jumping for joy, but he’s emotionally supercharged from where he was. It’s interesting how stupid and how much ego is involved with boys. We’re just boys and bands. Women are so much better at this stuff than we are. I always tell my wife, I was like, ‘Boys are weird because unless it’s a big deal, we’re either going to fist fight or we’re just going to brush it under the rug. There’s no gray area.’”

Netflix’s ‘Britney Vs Spears’ Trailer Calls Her Conservatorship ‘An Epic Fail Of The Legal System’

Britney Spears is still embroiled in a 13-year-long legal battle to end her conservatorship. The singer’s case has seen many wins in recent months, including her father voluntarily stepping down as her co-conservator and the court allowing her to chose her own lawyer. The singer is even pushing to have her conservatorship end by this fall. But there’s still much unknown about the specifics of her legal situation. Following the success off Hulu’s Framing Britney Spears documentary, Netflix is now offering their own exposé in the form of the upcoming film Britney Vs Spears.

The official trailer for Britney Vs Spears just dropped, showing how filmmakers relied on several people close to the singer to explain her legal situation. Along detailing how Spears has been “silenced to speak about anything that’s really going on” with her legal battles, the film also questions the legitimacy of the case for the singer to remain in the conservatorship. The trailer even goes so far as to say that the length of Spears’s conservatorship constitutes as “an epic fail of the legal system.”

Britney Vs Spears is set to be available to stream on Netflix starting September 28. It was directed by Erin Lee Carr, an award-winning documentarian whose other films like How to Fix A Drug Scandal can also be found on Netflix.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ Response To The Wolves Firing President Gersson Rosas: “WTF…”

It is exceedingly rare for NBA teams to make gigantic changes to their front office a week before the start of training camp, but the Minnesota Timberwolves decided to do just that on Wednesday afternoon. The team announced its decision to part ways with president Gersson Rosas, with owner Glen Taylor saying in a statement, “Today, the Minnesota Timberwolves parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. As an organization, we remain committed to building a winning team that our fans and city can be proud of.”

Making this sort of change at any point in the NBA calendar is a gigantic decision, but considering the timing (and the fact that the Timberwolves’ hat has prominently been in the ring in the race to trade for Ben Simmons), Rosas’ ouster comes as a shock to many. In a potentially bad bit of news for the team, one such person who is shocked appears to be superstar big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who took to Twitter in the immediate aftermath of the news and posted three letters that get a point across.

Now, it’s plausible any number of things could have led to Towns tweeting this, but considering the timing, this simple message speaks volumes.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

I was in Brisbane hungover, it was nice and humid. I was with our booking agent and he got a call asking if we’d play with Foo Fighters for a stadium show. Fleet Foxes’ Charming ‘Featherweight’ Video Tells A Story Of Resilience Through Claymation

Around this time last year – OK, exactly at this time last year — Fleet Foxes fans found themselves blessed with a brand new album. Shore was something of a surprise for listeners, who didn’t know that Robin Pecknold had been busy crafting the follow-up to 2017’s Crack-Up and finished it during quarantine. To celebrate the one-year-anniversary of that auspicious release, the band are sharing a new video today for the track “Featherweight.”

Like plenty of their visuals before now, the animated clip was created by Robin’s brother, Sean Pecknold, an impressive artist in his own right in the visual world. The “Featherweight” video was actually directed by Robin and Sean together, and the clay stop-motion has long been a part of the band’s storytelling aesthetic. The visual follows the story of a hawk with a broken wing, and becomes a larger story about success and second chances.

“When I made the first Fleet Foxes video using clay stop-motion, I fell in love with the tactile quality of the technique and never looked back,” Sean said in a press release. “There is something really special about creating animations in the real world. The process is more physical and more immediate than clicking away at a mouse and getting red-eyed.”

Andy Shauf Announces A New Album, ‘Wilds,’ Dropping This Week

Earlier in the month, Andy Shauf introduced us to a very chill rubber ducky in his lyric video for “Spanish On The Beach.” Now, the Canadian singer-songwriter has announced that he’s actually releasing a new album, Wilds, in just two days(!). The songs, including last year’s “Jeremy’s Wedding,” are taken from the same sessions as his last album, 2020’s The Neon Skyline. Additionally, Shauf has shared “Jaywalker,” which is written from the perspective of someone wandering across the street, not checking for cars.

Opening up about writing 50 songs for The Neon Skyline sessions, Shauf told Uproxx‘s Steven Hyden last year: “That was just a result of doing it the way I did, where I didn’t know what was going to happen. I would write a batch where one main point has to happen, and then write four songs in that direction, and then be like, ‘Oh, that’s terrible.’ Then those songs are scrapped and I have to write four more.”

Listen to “Jaywalker” above and check out the Wilds art and tracklist below.

ANTI-

1. “Judy (Wilds)”
2. “Spanish On The Beach”
3. “Jaywalker”
4. “Call”
5. “Television Blue”
6. “Green Grass”
7. “Wicked And Wild”
8. “Believe Me”
9. “Jeremy’s Wedding (Wilds)”

The Timberwolves Have Shockingly Fired Team President Gersson Rosas

Training camp will begin around the NBA next week, which isn’t usually the time to make major personnel changes in your front office, but the Minnesota Timberwolves have done just that, firing their president of basketball operations, Gersson Rosas, a month before the start of the new season.

Team owner Glen Taylor put out a very vague statement that doesn’t go into any detail regarding why Rosas was let go, but the timing raises an awful lot of eyebrows.

“Today, the Minnesota Timberwolves parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. As an organization, we remain committed to building a winning team that our fans and city can be proud of.”

With new ownership coming in soon and the Wolves reportedly making their interest very well known for Ben Simmons on the trade market, there’s plenty going on in Minnesota at the moment for a team that now needs to find a new lead decision maker. Per Dane Moore, there has been some “dissension” for some time in the front office and that divisiveness apparently led to Rosas’ ouster.

There will surely be more reporting to come on what led to the sudden change, but it doesn’t exactly paint the best picture of a franchise that has long struggled to find much in the way of stability. As for a replacement, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report brought word that new ownership is fond of Sixers GM Elton Brand.

R. Kelly Reportedly Won’t Testify During His Sex Trafficking Trial

R. Kelly is currently on trial facing charges including sex crimes, human trafficking, child pornography, racketeering, and obstruction of justice. After the prosecution had several alleged victims come forward to detail the reported abuse they faced at the hands of the R&B singer, Kelly’s defense team is now making their case. But just after the singer failed to produce one of his own witnesses, Kelly is now reportedly opting out of testifying on his own behalf.

During his hearing on Wednesday, Kelly told the judge that he won’t be taking the the witness stand to defend himself, per a report from Billboard. “You don’t want to testify, correct?” US District Judge Ann Connelly asked during the proceeding, to which Kelly replied: “Yes, ma’am.” Apparently, Kelly’s main reason is that he wants to avoid cross-examination from prosecution.

Kelly’s defense team is expected to rest their case on Wednesday evening, making way for closing arguments. Kelly’s defense case has been relatively brief and primarily relies on employees and other associates who agreed to discredit the sex crime allegations on the singer’s behalf. Per Billboard‘s report, most witnesses claimed they never saw Kelly abuse anyone, with one mentioning they only ever saw the singer being “chivalrous” to his love interests. Another witness, however, admitted on the stand that they owed Kelly for their career success and hoped to see him win the case.

On the other hand, the prosecution in Kelly’s case have brought a number of witnesses to the stands. One witness claimed they saw Aaliyah, who was under age when she met Kelly, in a sexual situation with the singer. Another woman accused Kelly of horrific and abusive sex crimes, including a forced abortion.

Strangers rally to pay for diapers a man stole from Walmart after he couldn’t pay for them

A controversial post by the Winter Haven Police Department in Florida has dredged up a unique debate over whether it’s acceptable for a seemingly desperate father to steal from a multi-billion dollar corporation.

On Saturday, the police department posted security camera footage of a man pushing a shopping cart with his two young children at a local Walmart. According to the police, the man attempted to buy diapers and baby wipes but his card was declined at the self-checkout.

The man left the store then returned without the children to buy the products with a different card which was also declined.

The man then left the store with the items without paying.

The police department posted a photo of the man on its Facebook page with a snarky comment. “So when your card is declined and you try another one with the same result, that is NOT license to just walk out with the items anyway,” the department wrote.

(The original post by the Winter Haven Police Department did not obscure the man’s face.)

The police department posted the images and description of the crime in an attempt to find the man and charge him with shoplifting. According to Winter Haven police, Walmart has a zero-tolerance policy and wants the man to be arrested.

This post rubbed a lot of people the wrong way because the man was caught stealing necessities for his children. He wasn’t stealing alcohol or a television set. Diapers are not cheap and there are a lot of people struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic.

The post received well over 1,000 comments with many offering to pay for what the man stole.

There were also a lot of people who thought the police department acted in poor form by shaming a man who committed a crime to provide necessities for his children. Many called the department directly to say they believe the charges should be dropped.

It’s impossible to know what type of pressure the man was under when he decided it was better to steal the diapers and wipes instead of paying for them. If he had access to money at home but didn’t feel like making a second trip, then stealing the diapers was clearly wrong.

But if the man was down on his luck and had no other options then one can understand his decision. If he didn’t, he would have been forced to neglect the health of his young children which is also morally reprehensible.

Regardless if you agree with the man’s actions or not, his children shouldn’t have to go without clean diapers.

Some in the comments said that there are community resources available to parents who need help affording diapers and he should have reached out to one of those organizations before he decided to steal.

Whether the man was right to steal or not, comes down to all of our personal values. But the positive thing that has come out of the story is the number of people who were willing to help the man by paying for his diapers. It shows that there are a lot of kind-hearted people out there that are looking for ways to help those in need.

It was also heartening to see the number of people who criticized the police department for shaming a man that committed a crime out of what appeared to be desperation. The police have a duty to uphold the law, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for them to shame parents who are in need.
