10 smile-worthy moments from this week to boost your mood

Need a mood boost to help you sail through the weekend? Here are 10 moments that brought joy to our hearts and a smile to our faces this week. Enjoy!

1. How much does this sweet little boy adore his baby sister? So darn much.

Oh, to be loved with this much enthusiasm! The sheer adoration on his face. What a lucky little sister.

2. Teens raise thousands for their senior trip, then donate it to their community instead.

When it came time for Islesboro Central School’s Class of 2021 to pick the destination for their senior class trip, the students began eyeing a trip to Greece or maybe even South Korea. But in the end, they decided to donate $5,000 they’d raised for the trip to help out their community members struggling in the wake of the pandemic instead.

3. Radio DJ rallies community to help a man he saw walking 6 hours a day to and from work.

After veteran Chicago radio personality “Ramblin’ Ray” Stevens noticed Braxton Mayes, 20, walking during his commute from work several times, he offered him a ride. Then, when he found out Mayes walked 3 hours each way to and from work because his car broke down, he called on the community to help him get his car fixed. Read the full story here.

4. Just for the sheer adorableness of it, this red panda noshing on snacks while getting weighed.

Stop it. How cute can a video get? It doesn’t even look real. Gah. Now desperately feeling the need to find a red panda.

5. Speaking of adorable animals, this wild Canada goose couple is winning hearts all over the place.

Arnold is a Canada goose that lives near the Cape Wildlife Center with his life partner, and after he was taken to the center to be treated for injuries, she showed up at the door looking for him. The staff let her see him while he was getting oxygen after his surgery, and they both calmed down as she started grooming him. Goose love is real, folks. Read the full story here.

6. This dedicated dad wanted to surprise his Moana-loving kids, and The Rock made it happen.

We love The Rock. It’s hard not to when you see videos like this one. (And kudos to the dad for keeping up with his rap. Not easy, even when you’re a parent who’s heard the soundtrack a million times.)

7. Mama cat introducing her kitten to her best doggo friend.

This is what we call “Pupworthy” content. You can almost hear the dialogue happening. So dang sweet.

8. A little perspective—our beautiful home planet viewed from space.

There are more than 7 billion of us here on this little rock hurtling through space, and while we definitely have our issues to work out, this short video is a stunning reminder that we’re all one people, part of one earthly home.

9. This joy-filled commentary of Friday feeding time at Caen Hill farm is a perfect timeline cleanser.

Caen Hill Countryside Centre is a charity in Devizes, United Kingdom that helps young people and rescues animals, and we would like this gentleman to narrate all of the happenings in our daily lives, please.

10. If you still feel like you’re stumbling instead of sailing into the weekend, don’t fret. You’re not alone.

We hope perusing these stories lifted your spirit, but if it didn’t, that’s okay. Sometimes we just need to just flop down and rest on our faces for a while. Thanks, doggo, for the solidarity.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

NFL Fans Got Off A Bunch Of Jokes After Dak Prescott Inaccurately Used HIPAA To Avoid A Vaccine Question

The COVID-19 vaccine has been readily available for all U.S. citizens for months now, and on Thursday, the NFL made clear that they very much want every player to get it. In a memo sent out to all 32 teams, the league said that a COVID-19 outbreak among unvaccinated members of a team would not lead to games getting moved around, as they were last season.

Instead, teams that suffer said outbreak would forfeit the game, accept a loss in the standings, and prevent players on both teams from getting their game checks. It’s very much a “the carrot didn’t work, so here’s the stick” approach from the league, but in response, some players have taken some strange approaches.

Some, like DeAndre Hopkins of the Arizona Cardinals, floated the possibility of just not playing football if need be (Hopkins since deleted his tweet and walked it back). And then, there have been guys like Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, who are asked about whether they got vaccinated and cite HIPAA.

This is not HIPAA. Known in full as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, HIPAA basically means — at least in this context, and to be clear, this is an overly-simplified definition — that healthcare professionals can’t reveal your medical information. It does not mean that a reporter is not allowed to ask you if you got the COVID-19 vaccine. You can just respond by saying, “I do not want to answer this question,” which you can do on any other number of subjects! This same conversation is happening in the world of politics right now, because one particular politician is doing this exact same thing. Regardless of the job, this is not a HIPAA violation.

Anyway, Prescott got some egg on his face for this, because in the aftermath, a bunch of folks took to Twitter and made HIPAA jokes.

If you’d like to learn more about what HIPAA is an isn’t, click here.

NBA Draft Hopeful Josh Giddey Handled A Reporter Asking Their Kid ‘Did You Poop’ On A Hot Mic Like A Seasoned Vet

One of the names that plenty of draftniks expect to hear called early in the 2021 NBA Draft is Josh Giddey, the 18-year-old Australian point guard who spent the last year tearing up the National Basketball League. One of the things for which he’s received plenty of praise during the Draft process is his composure, and on Friday, he got the chance to show that off in a rather unconventional way.

Giddey hopped on a media call with members of the Oklahoma City Thunder beat. While there, this happened:

These sorts of hot mic moments happen pretty frequently, but very rarely are they as silly as “reporter asks their son if they pooped, only the athlete heard it and have a brief moment of wondering if it happened to them.” The credit of the reporter — Brandon Rahbar of Daily Thunder — he owned it on Twitter and was able to make a joke about the whole thing.

Giddey gets high marks here for not getting derailed, instead hearing this very silly question but continuing his train of thought that was briefly interrupted. He could have made a big deal out of this, perhaps even teasing Rahbar, but he decided to keep his eyes on the prize. If we hear rumors of Giddey making a late surge up Draft boards, we can only assume this (along with the fact that, you know, he’s really good at basketball) will be why.

Trump Has Predictably Complained About The Cleveland Indians’ Name Change: ‘Such A Disgrace’

Former President Donald Trump is back with another hot take that no one asked for, and what’s worse? It’s a completely predictable gripe coming from a guy with nothing but time on his hands and limited ways to share his racist leanings with the public.

That’s right, we’re talking about the recent name change of one of the MLB’s most famous (or infamous) teams, the Cleveland Indians. Early Friday, the team shared the announcement that they were dropping the offensive mascot that’s come to define ballclub over the decades and renaming themselves the Cleveland Guardians to honor the city’s values and pay tribute to its iconic bridge. The team surveyed fans before announcing the name change, and a majority of people seem to be on board with the switch — it helps when you get national treasure Tom Hanks to narrate your PR announcement. But guess who wasn’t happy? That’s right, Donald Trump.

“Can anybody believe that the Cleveland Indians, a storied and cherished baseball franchise since taking the name in 1915, are changing their name to the Guardians? Such a disgrace,” Trump said in an emailed statement via Mediaite. “I guarantee that the people who are most angry about it are the many Indians of our Country. Wouldn’t it be an honor to have a team named the Cleveland Indians, and wouldn’t it be disrespectful to rip that name and logo off of those jerseys?”

Actually, no Don. Plenty of Indigenous Rights groups and activists have expressed dismay over the racist caricature of their culture and the fact that the MLB has made money over it all these years. Try again.

“The people of Cleveland cannot be thrilled and I, as a FORMER baseball fan, cannot believe things such as this are happening,” Trump continued. “A small group of people, with absolutely crazy ideas and policies, is forcing these changes to destroy our culture and heritage. At some point, the people will not take it anymore!”

First, we’re shocked that Trump has labeled himself a baseball fan because we’ve only ever seen him play golf and get booed at stadiums, but ok. The problem with this attack that’s even more egregious is the fact that Trump seems to think Indigenous culture is his culture. Your ancestors are German and Scottish, bud. Sit down.

Atlanta Declares July 22 ‘Kanye West Day’ In Honor Of The Producer’s Late Mother

July 22, when Kanye West was in Atlanta preparing for his massive listening event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the rapper was also honored by the city with a Kanye West Day. While he has long claimed Chicago and moved there at three years old, his mother, Donda West, taught at Morris Brown College for almost 20 years and was Chair of the English Department. The city declared Kanye West Day as a partial tribute to Donda, for whom Kanye titled the upcoming album he previewed at the listening.

Additionally, Morris Brown College President Kevin James likewise presented an honor in Donda’s memory: A Resolution of Meritous Service on behalf of the historically Black university. Kanye was given certificates commemorating both honors backstage at his event, which may have explained the two-hour delay that preceded him playing the apparently unfinished album. While some aspects were well-received, like Kanye’s reunion with Jay-Z on a song that closed the event, it appears that Ye wasn’t completely satisfied. The album didn’t release as scheduled, although fans seemed more surprised by the suite meal prices at the event than the album delay (he’s already delayed the album for over a year after initially announcing it in 2020).

You can see Kanye presented with the certificates honoring Kanye West Day below.

Jack Harlow Responds To Not Being In Lil Nas X’s ‘Industry Plant’ Naked Shower Scene: ‘I Let The Mastermind Cook’

Jack Harlow has already been having a breakout year on his own since the release of his late 2020 project That’s What They All Say, but things got even more heated starting today. Now that he’s collaborated with Lil Nas X on their chaotic “Industry Baby” video, all bets are off. There’s one rather, ahem, steamy scene in the video where Nas and his backup dancers are twerking naked in the prison shower, and fans and foes have been wondering why Harlow wasn’t involved in that section of the clip.

Plenty of the memes about the moment have centered on the tendency for straight men to fearfully distance themselves from homosexual behavior, and the stereotype that all heteronormative men are nervous around queer male sexuality. In Harlow’s case though, that’s not what was going on at all. Seeing the conversation unfold, the young rapper took to Twitter to let everyone know exactly where he stands. “Nas wrote the whole treatment for this video and I followed his lead every step of the way,” he said. “If he had asked me to be in that shower scene I woulda been in that shower scene. I just let the mastermind cook. Honored to be apart of it.”

Classy, and hey, room for a recast in the remix right? We all know how Lil Nas X loves remixes… and the thirst for Jack Harlow in the shower is getting stronger by the second. And the follow up here from Nas X indicates that might be coming quicker than anyone thought:

‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ Shows Off Cutting-Edge Animation In A Teaser Trailer

Clearly someone found all the dragon balls because the latest news from the team behind the animated series and films is a wish come true. Earlier today, Toei Animation finally revealed the title of the next entry in the Dragon Ball series: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. While not much is known about the upcoming movie apart from its 2022 release date, the footage shown during Toei’s Comic-Con panel offers a fans a glimpse at Goku’s updated “movement and feeling.” You can watch the brief trailer in the official Comic-Con International Dragon Ball Special Panel recording over on YouTube starting at 21:50, or in the video above.

In the clip, there’s a visible difference in how Goku moves that is decidedly more hand-drawn looking that ever before. According to the panel, this choice was made by incorporating “a lot of ingenuity using different technologies” into the film and franchise. Furthermore, the members of the Dragon Ball team present at the panel — Son Goku voice actor Masako Nozawa, executive producer of the Dragon Ball series Akio Iyoku , and producer of TV animation and movies for the Dragon Ball series Norihiro Hayashida — said Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will be more experimental than previous entries in the series. However, panel MC Sascha reassured fans that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is still heavily involved in the film’s development, much like he was in the critically-acclaimed Dragon Ball Super: Broly:

“Toriyama has written the original story, script, and also the character designs. He’s deeply involved in the story structure, of course, the character design, and every detail of the dialog.”

After years in production and much anticipation, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is scheduled to release sometime next year, though the exact date may vary depending upon region.

All The Best New R&B From This Week That You Need To Hear

Sometimes the best new R&B can be hard to find, but there are plenty of great rhythm-and-blues tunes to get into if you have the time to sift through the hundreds of newly released songs every week. So that R&B heads can focus on listening to what they really love in its true form, we’ll be offering a digest of the best new R&B songs that fans of the genre should hear every Friday.

In this week’s edition, Yung Bleu arrives with his latest album Moon Boy which presents a collection of weary R&B records focused on the up and downs with love as well as overcoming life’s struggles. Elsewhere, two of 2020’s best acts in R&B — Kehlani and Kiana Lede — team up for their first collaboration titled “Ur Best Friend” while Leon Bridges makes his return after three long years with his third album, Gold-Diggers Sound.

Yung Bleu — Moon Boy

After years of grinding on the mixtape and EP circuit, Alabama singer Yung Bleu earned his spotlight moment last summer thanks to a remix of “You’re Mines Still” with none other than Drake. The track boosted Bleu’s appeal and gave him the necessary launching pad that brings us to this moment: the release of his new album, Moon Boy. Altogether, the project presents 15 tracks and appearances from Kehlani, HER, Jeezy, Gunna, 2 Chainz, John Legend, and more.

Kiana Lede — “Ur Best Friend”

Last year, Kiana Lede and Kehlani released two of 2020’s best R&B projects with Kiki and It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. Now, the two singers have come together for their first collaboration, a somber effort titled “Ur Best Friend.” Kiana described the track as her “dream collab” with Kehlani as they face the consequences of their infidelity which ironically leaves them yearning for additional time with the respective men they had the affair with.

Leon Bridges — Gold-Diggers Sound

Ever since his stellar 2015 debut, Coming Home, Forth Worth, Texas-bred singer Leon Bridges has used his tender voice to create warm ballads about love, growth, struggle, and everything that falls in between. The latest example is his third album, Gold-Diggers Sound. Packaging 11 songs and features from Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and Ink, Bridges delivers yet another strong body of work inspired by his experiences at the Gold Diggers Studio in East Hollywood, a place he said he made “my home, my escape, and the center of my creative world.”

Tinashe — “I Can See The Future”

Two years removed from Songs For You, her first album as an independent act, Tinashe is ready to continue her journey with her upcoming fifth album, 333. After gracing us with two singles for the project, “Pasadena” with Buddy and “Bouncin,” the singer returns with a third effort. “I Can See The Future” is a bass-driven effort that delivers sultry promises for what’s to come in the future for her and her partner, something she claims to see already.

Chiiild — Hope For Sale

While some aimed to find a good moment to release new music during last year’s pandemic, others used the time to dig for a new source of inspiration for a future body of work. The latter is what we get with Montreal singer Chiiild and his new project, Hope For Sale. As he describes himself, the project represents his journey throughout the last year. “Aiming to cover the whole human experience, I dive into my outlook on life, love, and social justice,” he said in a press release. All in all, Hope For Sale presents 11 songs with features from Mahalia and Jensen McRae.

BJ The Chicago Kid — 4 AM

After delivering a string of singles that featured work with Eric Bellinger and Lucky Daye, BJ The Chicago Kid packages them all together for his new EP, 4 AM. The singer includes his last three singles as well as a new effort titled, “Love You Slow.” The steady slow jam is perfect for some bedroom magic to round out the 4 AM EP.

Samm Henshaw — “Grow” Feat. Tiana Major9

Back in 2019, Samm Henshaw stepped forward with a string of spirited tracks that brightened the mood of anyone who listened to it. Efforts like “Church” with Earthgang and “Only One To Blame” were clear examples and just about two years later, Henshaw continues on this path. Calling on London singer Tiana Major9, the two acts come through with “Grow,” which arrives as an introspective examination of happiness, self-fulfillment, and personal improvement.

Kevin Ross — “Looking For Love”

Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, Kevin Ross delivers his latest track, “Looking For Love.” It’s a passionate effort that sees the singer extending a hand to that special someone in his life who seeks romance just as much as he does. The song is also a great follow-up to his previous single “God Is A Genius.”

Peyton — PSA

Following years of taking small steps as an artist, Peyton is taking a big one with her debut album, PSA. Its 12 songs find the singer doing her very best to make herself heard while staying absolutely true to herself. “Everything I’m singing feels like my thoughts are pouring out boldly to the world,” she said of the album. The project also brings listeners into the reflective world of Peyton’s attempts to grasp the ever-so-confusing elements of love, friendship, and life itself.

The ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Writers Have Finally Answered Whether Steve Rogers Is A Virgin In The MCU

Ever since Chris Evan’s Steve Rogers went into the ice in the final moments of 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel fans have had one question and one question only: wait a minute, is Cap a virgin? While theories have abounded over the years, and the events of Avengers: Endgame suggested that Cap did eventually get some, but only after traveling back in time to be with Peggy Carter following his tenure in the MCU, the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have finally provided their perspective on Cap’s love life.

For the record, Markus and McFeely have written all three of the Captain America movies along with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, so they’re intimately familiar with the MCU version of Steve Rogers. According to them, Cap got his swerve on not long after being injected with the super-soldier serum. In fact, they seem kind of astounded that people thought Steve was a virgin this whole time. Via Yahoo!:

McFeely suggests that Steve might have been doing a little more than singing and dancing during his USO Tour across the nation to introduce him as Captain America and promote war bonds.

“If you look like that, and you’re going to city to city, and you’re signing autographs for the likes of the ladies that he’s signing the autographs for, I’ve got to imagine that [he lost his virginity],” McFeely explains.

Well, there you have it. The MCU version of Captain America maybe had sex with his backup dancers while promoting war bonds. He did not go into the ice never knowing the touch of a woman, and now, God knows what he did during his time with The Avengers. Those women were his co-workers!

The Best New Hip-Hop This Week

The best new hip-hop this week includes albums, videos, and songs from Kanye West, Lil Nas X, and more.

… Technically. While Lil Nas X’s new song “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow did drop as scheduled — and more than lived up to his warning that it was not for kids — Kanye added yet another anticipated project to his ever-growing list of pump fakes. Despite renting out a whole ass arena for a listening event for Donda (for which he was two hours late), he neglected to actually put the album out, surprising virtually no one in the process.

However, Friday did see the releases of Gunna and Polo G’s “Waves,” Logic’s “Call Me,” and Isaiah Rashad’s “Wat U Sed” along with the releases listed below.

Here is the best of hip-hop this week ending July 23, 2021.

Albums/EPs/Mixtapes

Childish Major — Thank You, God. For It All

Childish Major

The Atlanta producer turned solo artist invites Schoolboy Q and Yung Baby Tate for this bubbly set of seven songs, addressing his rough-and-tumble upbringing and showcasing his lyrical growth. JetsonMade and Hollywood Cole provide beats, while Childish delves into both TikTok and backpack rap song structures with a deft touch.

Dave — We’re All Alone In This Together

Dave

Ever since popping up in the mid-2010s, Dave has distinguished himself as one of the most magnetic MCs Britain has to offer. Now, two years after releasing his debut album Psychodrama, the 23-year-old delivers a confidently grown-up grime meditation featuring fellow scene standout Stormzy on the electrifying “Clash,” Afropop sensation Wizkid, and James Blake. Sheesh.

EST Gee — Bigger Than Life Or Death

EST Fee

Paying off the faith shown by big-name co-signers like fellow Louisvillian Jack Harlow, initial benefactor Lil Baby, and CMG label boss Yo Gotti, EST Gee’s first mainstream effort is a slick blend of solo trap and high-speed collaborations with some of rap’s hottest. It’s a solid body of work that establishes his footing as a potential breakout star.

Yung Bleu — Moon Boy

Yung Bleu

It’s fitting, but no less disappointing, that Yung Bleu’s debut album is such a feature-filled affair — he pretty much owes his current level of exposure to a timely feature from kingmaker Drake. He’s proven that he can stand on his own, as well as coming into the game with a compelling enough narrative to hold up over the course of a full-length project, but clearly, there’s a lot of investment in the success of his melodic first outing, so he’s brought plenty of backup for maximum algorithmic coverage. Fortunately, he’s developed enough that they sound like guests, never overwhelming him or skewing the gravity of songs away from exactly what he wants to do.

Singles/Videos

Asian Doll — “Nunnadet Sh*t Remix” Feat. Dream Doll, Dreezy, Ivorian Doll, and Rubi Rose

Look, man. Say what you want about how many “Dolls” are on this track (there’s a new one?!), but it’s fun to hear all these women bouncing off each other’s flows, each taking their own approach to a sneering, swaggering posse cut. Plus, anytime we get more Dreezy is appreciated.

Damu The Fudgemunk — “God Speed” Feat. Blu

Dope beats, dope rhymes, what more do y’all want? There aren’t so many bells or whistles here, just good old-fashioned, lyrically focused underground hip-hop from two of the scene’s most clever creators.

Jordan Hollywood — “The Ugly Song”

So, as an unapologetic fan of Bubba Sparxxx, one of the 2000s most criminally underrated rap acts, this unabashed homage/remake strikes me as very endearing… Then, there’s the obvious parallel between the two rappers that shows Hollywood knows his history and doesn’t shy away from it. I love it.

Rexx Life Raj — “Turn Her Up”

At this point, Raj and Russ are both fixtures of this column, with weekly releases that highlight the value of independent hustle. Raj’s latest offering praises a female companion, reeling off all her impressive qualifications and promising to always play hype man.

Russ — “Lake Como”

Meanwhile, Russ’s contribution to the week’s newest hip-hop is similar, a mellow reflection on a paramour he’s finally ready to take seriously. He sings for about half the track, then spits a melodic verse to finish it off.
