Jack Harlow Addresses The Confusion About His BET Awards Nominations: ‘I Feel Blessed To Have A Voice’

During last month’s BET Awards, some fans on Twitter expressed confusion at the presence of Jack Harlow at the ceremony and his nominations, as Harlow isn’t Black despite his participation in what he acknowledges is a traditionally Black genre. He addressed the debate in a new interview with Yahoo!, saying, “I feel blessed to have a voice in this period because, one, I’m not a street artist, and two, I’m not Black. The only thing keeping me here right now is that level of authenticity, of being myself.”

Harlow, who was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Best Song for his “What’s Poppin” remix featuring DaBaby, Tory Lanez, and Lil Wayne, appears to take in stride both the light backlash against him and the cultural shift that led up to it. He compared the modern era to the blog rap era when artists like Mac Miller and Asher Roth were seemingly being accepted into hip-hop spaces more readily than some of their predecessors. Although white rappers have always flourished economically, not all of them appeared at the BET Awards or received nominations.

“All of this stuff was coming into the fold and it had this energy surrounding it of, ‘We’re letting the white kids come to the party. We’re all in this together,’” Harlow said. However, in conversations with his fellow Kentuckian Nemo Achida, he notes that since the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, some Black folks have expressed a desire to close ranks. “He feels like the country going into these new civil rights moments almost shifted away from, ‘Let’s have the white boy at the party,’” he noted of his friend’s observation. “It became less about let’s all be diverse together and turned back into hip-hop being, ‘It needs to be a Black genre.’”

He accepts this new state of affairs philosophically, saying, “That’s just been the natural transformation of things, I think,” and even agrees that as a participant in a Black genre, he has a responsibility to show up for Black people. “The things I was doing last summer, any fans who didn’t feel like criticizing the police or were on the other side of things, I was going to weed them out. That could have been a moment for them to no longer be fans. But what is important is that I lead by example for all the white kids looking at me. This is what you do. You don’t just enjoy Black culture. You stand up next to Black people in a time of need.”

Courteney Cox Finally Got Her ‘Friends’ Emmy Nomination, Two Decades After The Show Ended

Friends ran for 10 seasons with every cast member receiving Emmy nominations except for one. Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston both scored a handful of nominations and a win apiece, and the three male stars (Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer) all received at least one nod as well. That leaves only Courteney Cox, who was ignored over and over again through out the show’s run, and if you think she didn’t notice, well, she did. Cox recently told Howard Stern that, yes, it “definitely hurt my feelings” to be snubbed. The good news, though? That streak is over with this year’s nominations.

Sort-of, at least. The HBO Max “Friends: The Reunion” special, which counts Cox as an executive producer, received a nomination for the Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category. Better late than never, right? Cox was recognized, alongside the rest of her cast members and O.G. show creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane. So, it’s not officially an Emmy nomination for performance, but heck, Monica Geller deserves to her day in the sun. It’ll be the shiniest, most obsessively-scrubbed day ever. Variety laid it all out there with previous nomination counts:

During the NBC sitcom’s decade-long original run, the series nabbed 62 total Emmy nominations. Five of these were for Aniston, who was twice nominated in the supporting comedy actress category (in 2000 and 2001) before moving to the lead comedy actress category, in which she picked up noms from 2002 to 2004, winning in 2002. Kudrow scored a whopping six noms during the 10 years the show was on the air, all in the supporting comedy actress category, winning in 1998. LeBlanc was celebrated three times in the lead comedy actor category, getting nods in 2002, 2003 and 2004; Perry picked up a lead comedy actor nomination in 2002; and Schwimmer scored a supporting comedy actor nom in 1995.

“Friends: The Reunion” is up against some stiff competition, including “Bo Burnham: Inside,” “David Byrne’s American Utopia,” “8:46 – Dave Chappelle,” “Friends: The Reunion,” “Hamilton,” and “A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.”

The Emmys will air on Sunday, September 19.

Ex-GOP Congressman Charlie Dent’s Jaw Is On The Floor Over CPAC: ‘It’s A Political Freak Show, It’s Like The Star Wars Bar’

Former Republican congressman Charlie Dent couldn’t find enough bad things to say about what went down at CPAC over the weekend. Between Donald Trump admitting that he labels any polls that aren’t a win for him “fake” and Donald Trump Jr. trying—and failing—to get a laugh out of the crowd (which in and of itself was actually really funny), Dent seemed to nail the general atmosphere of the gathering when he referred to it as a “freak show.”

As Raw Story reports, while discussing this weekend’s bananas Conservative Political Action Conference on CNN’s New Day, Dent—a GOP member who served Pennsylvania’s 15th congressional district from 2005 to 2018—keenly observed that “CPAC has always been kind of an odd gathering and now it’s been taken over by a bunch of radicals, anti-vaxxers. It’s a land of misfit toys, it’s a political freak show, it’s like the Star Wars bar. This is just bizarre.”

Putting aside the fact that it’s technically a cantina, not a bar… Dent had plenty more to say about just how wacky his former colleagues have gotten during and following the Trump years:

“The fact that we’re celebrating that we’re not meeting our vaccination targets is actually reprehensible, we all know this. I can’t imagine—serious people are not showing up to this thing. I mean, look what happens. they have their stupid straw poll and have a ranked-choice straw poll too apparently now. But this whole group it’s not serious and one doesn’t know if you should laugh or cry or be alarmed about what we’re watching and witnessing at these CPAC gatherings.”

But it seems like CPAC has always attracted the nuttiest Republicans. “I stayed away from them when I was in Congress,” Dent said of the kind of folks who count down the days to CPAC. “I never wanted to be associated with some of the types who showed up there, but again, it says a lot that serious aspirational presidential [Republican] candidates weren’t there.” Clearly, Dent doesn’t see Trump as a “serious aspirational” candidate.

Jean Smart Is Joining Brad Pitt And Margot Robbie For Damien Chazelle’s Old Hollywood Epic, ‘Babylon’

Jean Smart cannot be stopped. Though the iconic actress is preparing to turn the big 7-0 in September, her career is on a major hot streak—and is only getting hotter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smart has just signed on to join Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon. Not much is known about the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest project, except that, like La La Land, it’s yet another ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood—though this time it’s actually set during that time.

Smart is said to be playing a powerful Hollywood journalist/film critic whose opinion can determine a filmmaker’s future. The movie, which Chazelle wrote and is directing, is set in the late 1920s, when silent films were being replaced by talkies—and not all of the silent film era’s biggest stars made it out alive. According to THR, Babylon has been described as “The Great Gatsby on steroids.”

It’s just the latest bit of great career news for Smart, who has been on a roll for several years—mostly on the small screen—after turning in masterful performances in Fargo, Legion, and Watchmen. Just this morning, the three-time Emmy winner racked up two more nominations—one for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Mare of Easttown, and another for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for HBO Max’s Hacks (which has already been renewed for a second season).

Netflix’s ‘Witcher’ Animated Spinoff Film Gets A New Trailer And Release Date

Prior to the second season of The Witcher hitting Netflix on December 17, the streaming service is releasing an animated prequel to the tale of the white wolf — and we now have a first look and a release date. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is one of a handful of Witcher-related projects Netflix is currently working on, and the series first animated title. During developer CD Projekt Red’s first-ever WitcherCon, a convention dedicated to sharing news and bringing Witcher community members together, the team shared the film’s August 23 release date — as well as this trailer:

While the trailer itself is fairly minimal, forgoing details to simply show off a bit of the animation style provided by Studio MIR (Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra), Netflix has shared the basic premise of the film. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf follows the Witcher Vesemir, who you might best know as Geralt of Rivia’s mentor. However, long before Vesemir trained Geralt behind the walls of Kaer Morhen, he was a monster slayer every bit as fierce as his protegee. The movie will focus on Vesemir’s origins as a Witcher, and watch him take on beasts — as well as some personal demons — as he saves the kingdom.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is being directed by Han Kwang II, and is written by Beau de Mayo along with The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. The film hits Netflix on August 23, 2021.

Deadpool Has Made His Unlikely MCU Introduction (Kind Of!) With Help From Taika Waititi

Deadpool 3 doesn’t start filming until 2022 at the earliest, but the fourth-wall-breaking superhero has made his Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction… kind of.

In a video posted to Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube channel, the Merc with the Mouth and Kong, the rock monster played by Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, watch the trailer for Free Guy. Yes, it’s one Ryan Reynolds character reacting to another Ryan Reynolds character in the “most expensive reaction video ever made,” which is one Detective Pikachu away from starting the Ryan Reynolds Cinematic Universe. (Unlike Deadpool and the MCU, Van Wilder will not be invited to the RRCU.) “Deadpool and Korg React” — Waititi is also in Free Guy with Reynolds, so the synergy is strong here — is worth watching for the Jodie Comer praise alone.

Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feige gave an update about Deadpool 3 earlier this year. “It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now,” he said, but “it will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.” Bob’s Burgers veterans Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux are co-writing the script.

Free Guy comes out on August 13.

Halsey Is A Disenfranchised Victorian Queen In Her ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ Film Trailer

Before unveiling the Renaissance-inspired cover art to her If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power album, Halsey said she had something “very special” planned. As it turns out, that something “special” is actually a theatrical film set to her upcoming LP, which is set to be released in IMAX theaters.

Halsey unveiled the trailer to her If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which is described in press materials as an “an hour-long film experience.” It was written by Halsey and directed by Colin Tilley, who previously worked with her on the videos for her chart-topping tracks “Without Me” and “You Should Be Sad.”

The trailer stars the singer as a disenfranchised Victorian queen who enacts revenge on those who have wronged her. The visual also features an ominous description of the plot: “This film is about the lifelong social labyrinth of sexuality and birth. The greatest horror stories never told were burned with the bodies of those who died in that labyrinth…”

Ahead of the trailer’s release, Halsey described the inspiration behind her LP. “This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth,” she said. “[…] The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.”

Watch Halsey’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power film trailer above.

If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power is out 8/27 via Capitol. Pre-order the album here.

Olivia Rodrigo Says She’ll See Joe Biden ‘At The White House’ In An Instagram Interaction About Vaccines

As one of 2021’s breakout stars, “Drivers License” singer Olivia Rodrigo has quickly become one of the leading voices of her generation. As the number of vaccine shots being administered in the US has begun to dwindle, President Biden is trying to appeal to the younger crowd — and Rodrigo has given him her commitment to helping.

To get his message out to the youth, Biden decided to take to social media. Biden shared a photo of him as a young man on the POTUS Instagram account Tuesday, a post that many commenters were labeling a “thirst trap.” The President wrote, “I know this young person would’ve gotten vaccinated, but we’ve got to get other young people protected as well. Who’s willing to help?”

Of the commenters, Rodrigo was one of the first young celebrities to voice her support. “i’m in! see you tomorrow at the white house!” Rodrigo wrote. The president saw Rodrigo’s comment and said: “You bet!”

Rodrigo is actually set to meet with Biden at the White House on Wednesday, according to CNBC. She’ll sit down with Biden and chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, where she’ll star in promotional videos urging young people to protect themselves against COVID with vaccines. Rodrigo will share the videos on social media in hopes of influencing her millions of followers to get their shots.

Trump Was Reportedly So Boiling Mad Over The ‘Bunker Boy’ Leak That He Called For The Execution Of Whoever Snitched On Him

As Black Lives Matter protests broke out across the country following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, Donald Trump along with the First Lady and their son, Barron, were reportedly moved to an underground bunker to hide in the event the White House was stormed by protesters. It wasn’t exactly the best look for the former president — a move that even earned him a diss from his pal Kanye in a song — and, according to a new book, Trump was absolutely furious that word got out and people dubbed him “Bunker Boy.”

In a new excerpt from Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost by Washington Post journalist Michael C. Bender, the bunker incident was “the most upset some aides had ever seen the president,” which is pretty notable given Trump’s penchant for angry outbursts and tantrums. He also became obsessed with “smoking out” whoever leaked the story to the press and reportedly threatened to have them executed.

Via CNN:

‘Whoever did that, they should be charged with treason!’ Trump yelled. ‘They should be executed!’” the book reads.

Then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows “repeatedly tried to calm the president as startled aides avoided eye contact,” Bender writes, adding that Trump’s top aide told his boss: “I’m on it. We’re going to find out who did it.”

Bender’s book shows a White House in chaos leading up to the 2020 presidential election, and the situation only worsened as it became clear that Trump had lost to Democratic candidate Joe Biden. In a previously released excerpt, Bender revealed how (often drunk) Rudy Giuliani maneuvered his way into becoming the lead of Trump’s legal team by routinely frustrating Trump’s previous counsel, Justin Clark. While Clark had a firm understanding of election laws and the recount process, Giuliani would often tell Trump what he wanted to hear and accuse Clark of lying to the president.

Following a disastrous phone call, Clark finally called Rudy a “f**king a**hole” and quit.
