Snail Mail Shares Her Soaring Cover Of A Smashing Pumpkins Classic From The ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ Soundtrack’

Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw The TV Glow has one of the most stacked soundtracks of the year, with songs from Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, and Sloppy Jane featuring Phoebe Bridgers. Another highlight is Snail Mail‘s soaring cover of “Tonight, Tonight” by The Smashing Pumpkins, which had previously only been featured on the vinyl edition of the soundtrack (it was unfortunately mostly edited out of the film, too). But the Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness classic is now available on streaming.

“This all came together really serendipitously,” Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan, who also plays Tara in I Saw The TV Glow, said in a statement. “We had been working on this cover to play on the Valentine tour, before I got the part. It came up early on because I have a tattoo on my right arm of the man in the moon to commemorate the first ever science fiction film, A Trip To The Moon and the Smashing Pumpkins video for ‘Tonight, Tonight.’ While reading the script, I discovered the arch nemesis of the Pink Opaque is inspired by the same imagery. I told Jane we were doing this cover in NYC, they came and saw it live, and the rest was herstory.”

You can listen to Snail Mail’s cover above.

I Saw The TV Glow is available to watch on digital.

Shaboozey’s Jolly ‘Drink Don’t Need No Mix’ Video With BigXthaPlug Captures The Debauchery Of A Whiskey-Filled Night

Shaboozey and BigXthaPlug take over a dive bar for some drunken shenanigans in their “Drink Don’t Need No Mix” video. The video captures the debauchery as Shaboozey shoots pool and double fists a glass and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. Bar fights, body shots, and borderline flashing punctuate the hedonistic action. It all looks like a fun night out and one humongous headache the next morning for at least one patron — but not Shaboozey, who departs with a pair of companions and a big grin at the camera.

“Drink Don’t Need No Mix” appears on Shaboozey’s new album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, which came out in May, punctuating the genre-jumping Nigerian Virginian’s precipitous rise to stardom over the past year. After appearing twice on Beyoncé’s personal Great American Songbook, Cowboy Carter, he released the J-Kwon homage “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” jumping to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and launching J-Kwon back into the limelight, incidentally).

In September, Shaboozey heads out on tour in support of the new album after playing Outside Lands festival in August. It’s safe to say he’s got plenty to celebrate; let’s just hope he drinks responsibly.

You can watch Shaboozey’s “Drink Don’t Need No Mix” video with BigXthaPlug above.

Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going is out now via American Dogwood/EMPIRE. Find more information here.

Charles Barkley Thinks Adam Silver Did ‘A Great Job For The Players’ With Media Deal, Despite Frustration TNT Got Left Out

barkley top (3)
TNT

Charles Barkley has been extremely vocal about his frustrations with the NBA’s new national media rights deal in which the league chose NBC and Amazon’s offers over TNT’s, ending a decades-long partnership with Turner Sports. While TNT tried matching Amazon’s offer, the league declined, noting that while they matched the financials, they cannot meet what Amazon is offering in totality in terms of reach and streaming. Warner Bros. Discovery could take the league to court over all of it, but it’s highly unlikely anything changes beyond a potential financial settlement between the two sides.

As such, Inside the NBA is likely to end as we know it after next season, as Ernie Johnson is expected to stay at Turner no matter what, while the futures of Barkley, Shaq, and Kenny Smith are more in flux. Barkley has ripped the league for, what he felt, was not giving TNT a fair chance to stay in the package, even though his ire should likely be directed at David Zaslav and company for trying to play hardball in the exclusive negotiating window and not realizing what other networks would offer.

However, despite those frustrations with how things ended up for his employer, Barkley is able to set that aside to understand why Adam Silver went about it the way he did. Barkley joined Sirius XM NBA Radio to discuss the deal, and praised Silver for getting a “great deal for the owners and players”, reminding everyone that he works for the owners first and foremost.

“I have not. I’m gonna reach out to him at some point,” said Barkley. “Because you know I love Adam Silver. I think he’s fantastic. But also, I understand he works for the owners and the players. And, hey, this is a great deal for the owners and the players. Do I think this is the best thing for the fans? No, I do not. But, I hate when people go off on commissioners in sports…Their No. 1 job is the owners. They work for the owners. Their second job is to work for the players.

“And, hey, regardless of what happened with Turner, whatever, he did a great job for these players. And for the next 11 years, they’re going to make more money than they could ever spend. I hope they use it the right way, in their communities and their families, and things like that. But Adam, I got a lot of respect for Adam.”

Barkley is right, and it’s often something fans miss in their criticism of commissioners. Their bosses are the owners, and their job is to make them the most money. While they certainly have responsibilities to the players and fans, that’s secondary to the bottom line, and in this case it’s hard to argue Silver didn’t get the absolute most out of negotiations. The league really wanted to add a streaming partner in this deal as a third party, and bringing in Amazon at a big number, while still getting NBC to pay double what TNT was under the old deal was pretty incredible work — especially for all the hand-wringing about ratings, which often fails to recognize the greater context of TV ratings as a whole.

Steve Harvey Was Shocked By A Raunchy ‘Celebrity Family Feud’ Response Involving Mr. Peanut

family feud
Family Feud/ YouTube

Unfortunately for Steve Harvey, the best part about Family Feud is when the contestants give him outlandish answers that he is forced to repeat in a loud and affirming tone. And he’s said it all! But secretly, he must take pride in being the most popular game show host who gets to frequently shoutout things such as sex dreams, strippers, and..whatever this was. It’s not clear how much money Harvey makes from this gig, but hopefully it’s a lot.

The latest episode of Celebrity Family Feud featured your cool uncle’s favorite bands, Daughtry and Papa Roach, who were asked the important question: “Name something specific Mrs. Peanut might threaten to do to Mr. Peanut when she gets angry.” In this universe, we can assume Mr. Peanut never died back in 2020.

The typical answers included chop him, eat him, make him into butter, etc. But Papa Roach’s drummer Tony Palermo had the most eclectic response: “Break his nuts,” which was met with some laughs and a classic Steve Harvey reaction. “That’s what I love about the band,” he said. “They have that real good humor.”

Harvey added, “Never be able to say this on TV until now,” before calling out the answer, which was not on the board. “I don’t know how the hell that ain’t up there,” Harvey replied. “That’s such a well thought-out answer.” It wasn’t good enough for the band to get the points.

Fortunately for Daughtry, they ended up winning the round after stealing. Just when you think it’s over…It’s Not Over.

Watch as this couple experiences a lifetime together in a single day

In this super-cool video from Field Day and Cut Video, a young engaged couple is given a rare opportunity to see how they might look 30, 50, and 70 years in the future. With the help of some seriously talented makeup artists, the couple ages before each other’s eyes.

But, it’s the deep emotional impact of imagining a life shared together that is far more striking than their physical transformation.

Their love seems to strengthen as they see each other age, and the caring they display for one another is likely to make even the most cynical person a little emotional.

A letter to the woman who told me to stay in my daughter’s life after seeing my skin.

To a stranger I met at a coffee shop a few years ago who introduced me to what my life as a parent would be like:

My “welcome to black fatherhood moment” happened five years ago, and I remember it like it happened yesterday.

I doubt you’ll remember it, though — so let me refresh your memory.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Los Angeles in 2011, and I decided to walk my then 3-month-old daughter to the corner Starbucks. That’s when I met you — a stylish older white woman who happened to be ahead of me in line.

You were very friendly and offered up many compliments about how cute my daughter was, and I agreed wholeheartedly with you. She’s cute.

But after you picked up your drink, you delivered this parting shot:

“No offense, but it’s not often that I see black guys out with their kids, but it’s such a wonderful thing,” she said. “No matter what happens, I hope you stay involved in her life.”

And then you put on your designer sunglasses and left.

Meanwhile, I was like…

celebrity, racism, challenges, stigmas

Here’s the thing: I’m not angry with you, but I want you to understand the impact you had on my life.

Do I think you’re a mean-spirited racist? No, I don’t. Actually, I bet you’re a really nice lady.

But let’s be real for a second: Your view on black dads was tough for me to stomach, and I want you to know a few things about what it’s really like to be me.

1. I want you to know that we have challenges that other dads don’t experience.

I know what you’re thinking: “Oh boy — let me brace myself while he ‘blacksplains’ how hard his life is while shaming me for ignoring my white privilege.”

But that would be missing the point. We all have our challenges in life, and I’m not about to bring a big bottle of whine to a pity party.

Instead, as you probably know, today’s dads are trying to shed the stigma of being clueless buffoons.

nurture, unicorn, mainstream media

But black dads have an additional obstacle to hurdle in that we’re often seen as completely disinterested in fatherhood. Trust me, it gets old when people automatically assume you’re not good at something because of the color of your skin.

Our encounter was the first of many examples of this that I’ve witnessed, directly or indirectly, in my five and a half years of fatherhood, and I’m sure there will be more to come.

2. I want you to know that I’m not a shiny unicorn. There are plenty of black men just like me who love fatherhood.

During the months that followed our brief meeting, I felt a need to prove that you — a complete stranger — were wrong. I needed to prove there were plenty of black men just like me who loved being dads.

I knew a lot of these great men personally: My dad, my two brothers, and many others embraced fatherhood. But could any data back up how much black dads embraced fatherhood? Because the examples in mainstream media were few and far between.

Thankfully, the answer is yes.

A few years after I met you, a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 70% of black dads are likely to engage in common child-rearing activities such as diaper changing, bathing, toilet training, etc., on a daily basis. That’s a higher percentage than white or Hispanic fathers.

Full stop.

This isn’t about black dads being “the best” because parenthood isn’t a competition. It’s about showing that we’re not even remotely as bad as society makes us out to be.

And outside of the CDC study, I saw firsthand how hands-on black dads are when I was thrust into the public eye, too, because a lot of them reached out to me to tell their stories.

We nurture our kids.

dads, social norms, ethnicity, privilege

We’re affectionate with our kids.

fatherhood, children, family, parenting

And we do whatever our kids need us to do.

equality, community, gender roles

And none of that should come as a surprise to anyone.

3. I want you to know that I believe you meant well when you praised me for being involved in my daughter’s life, but that’s what I’m programmed to do.

Disneyland, fathers, daughters, ethnicity

I will always be there for her and her baby sister.

Even though I just described how black dads are different from many dads, I hope the takeaway you have from this is that we have a lot of similarities, too.

Please don’t fall into the trap of saying that you want to live in a colorblind world because it makes it harder to identify with inequality when it happens. Instead, I hope you can recognize that we have the same hopes, dreams, and fears as other parents, but the roads we travel may not be the same.

And no, I don’t want an apology.

But I hope when you pick up your next latte and see a dad who looks like me that you’ll smile knowing he’s the rule rather than the exception.

Perfectly unique toddler is bringing joy across social media with his ‘uncombable hair’

Have you ever come across something online that instantly made you smile? That’s what happens when people see Locklan Samples pop up on their Instagram feed. The cute dimple-faced toddler has a rare condition known as uncombable hair syndrome, which results in locks that stick straight up no matter how you try to manipulate them. It also causes the hair to be extremely fragile, so frequent combing can cause it to break off. The syndrome is so rare that Locklan is just one out of 100 people known to have it.

Locklan’s parents spoke with People magazine about how they discovered he was living with this ultra rare condition. Katelyn Samples, Locklan’s mom, explained that when he was born he had a head full of jet black hair, but eventually it fell out and was replaced with peach fuzz. A newborn baby’s hair is often completely different than the hair they end up with by the time they’re toddlers. It’s not uncommon for their hair to fall out in one spot or another, but it’s also not unheard of for their whole head to end up bald while their second sprigs of hair grow in.

Hair can grow back coarser, curlier or a completely different color. In Locklan’s case, his hair went from being jet black to platinum blonde peach fuzz, which eventually grew into hair that stood on end. Locklan’s parents said the color of his hair matched his brother’s hair, so it wasn’t a surprise, but the texture threw them for a loop.

When Katelyn posted pictures of Locklan on Instagram, a stranger messaged her asking if he had “uncombable hair syndrome.” This started Katelyn on a journey to find answers to what was going on with her infant’s hair, and if the condition was something she needed to be concerned about health-wise. Katelyn told People, it sent her into a “tailspin on Google.” Eventually, after climbing out of the Google rabbit hole, Katelyn called her son’s pediatrician to get answers. This turned out to be the first step toward an accurate diagnosis.

Locklan’s pediatrician had not heard of the condition and referred them to Atlanta’s Emory Hospital to see a specialist. It was there they got the diagnosis. Katelyn explained to People, “We went to see her and she said she’d only seen this once in 19 years.” The doctor “didn’t think it was uncombable hair syndrome because of how rare it is, but they took samples and a pathologist looked at it under a special microscope,” and confirmed the diagnosis, she said.

He joins the very small club of people with the syndrome. Thankfully, this condition only affects the toddler’s hair and he is developing normally in all other aspects of his childhood. Katelyn revealed she hardly ever has to wash his hair unless it gets visibly dirty as it doesn’t collect oils at the scalp. Everywhere they go people are fascinated by Lock’s locks and ask to touch his soft tresses.

The family documents their journey on their Instagram account, and have found a support group via Facebook, where Katelyn says “it’s cool to see how other kids’ hair has changed over the years—for some people it does not go away, and for others it becomes a little more manageable.” For now, Locklan enjoys the attention he gets from strangers, and he continues to bring a smile to people’s faces wherever he goes.
