Bryce Vine’s Fans Inspire His Creativity In ‘On Repeat’

Fans show love for their favorite artists in a number of ways, whether it’s an act as simple as streaming the performer’s songs or something as intense as getting an indelible tattoo of an album cover. The way Bryce Vine sees it, his relationship with his fans goes both directions, which he shows in the first episode of Uproxx’s new series On Repeat, made in partnership with Straight Talk.

In the video, Vine stands before a blank canvas of a jacket surrounded by patches, pins, and other DIY-ready materials, with the intent of making a custom jacket for himself. For Vine’s design, he took inspiration from the gifts his fans have given him over the years, saying, “One of my favorite things about shows is when fans bring me personalized things. Some of my favorite items of clothing I’ve ever had were things my fans sent to me by mail or given me at shows.”

Vine also speaks about how quality doesn’t have to cost much by explaining how that mindset works in terms of his creative process: “I don’t think quality really has to cost anything. It’s just like music: trying things out for hours and hours, moving things around, seeing what fits together right.”

Check out the video above for more from Bryce Vine and keep an eye out for more episodes of On Repeat.

Monty Williams Was Voted Coach Of The Year By His Fellow Coaches

Monty Williams is one of those people who is impossible to not cheer for in some capacity. The current Suns coach began his career in New Orleans and guided the Pelicans back to the playoffs after some lean years in the post-Chris Paul era, lost his wife in a tragic car accident in 2016, and through it all has always managed to keep a positive outlook on life.

When Williams took over the Suns job the expectation was he would improve the team, but the results have been far beyond anyone’s expectations. He helped maximize Phoenix’s roster his first year and nearly stole a play-in tournament spot during the NBA’s bubble. After making roster improvements, Williams was handed a potential playoff team and he again exceeded expectations. 51 wins and second place in the Western Conference, the Suns are a contender once again and Williams has played a huge role in that. A role he was reportedly rewarded for when the NBA’s other coaches voted him as their coach of the year.

It’s important to remember that this isn’t the traditional Coach of The Year award, as voted on by the media. That one still hasn’t been announced, but there’s a definite value in being recognized by one’s peers like Williams has been. He’s someone that has worked hard to reach this point in his career and the other coaches recognized him for it, and that is something worth celebrating.

The next step for Williams will be the playoffs. While they don’t know their opponent yet, he and the Suns will have to face a tough Lakers or Warriors team in the first round. His team will be put to the test in a seven-game series no matter who wins that game, but if they pass that, they’ll have plenty of confidence to go on a deep postseason run.

Kevin Morby And Hamilton Leithauser Trade Covers Of Each Other’s Music

Kevin Morby and The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser took some time out to give a coordinated nod to each other’s songwriting. Both musicians came together to trade stripped-down covers of their music on social media, which was meant to tease the duo’s joint 2021 Fall Mixer North American tour.

Morby shared a cover of “A 1000 Times” while lying in bed, the album opener to Leithauser and Rostam’s 2016 joint album I Had A Dream That You Were Mine. Leithauser also opted to pull an album opener from Morby’s catalog, choosing the introspective track “Come To Me Now” off the singer’s 2017 effort City Music.

In a message embedded in his cover’s video, Leithauser said “Come To Me Now” was the first song of Morby’s he had ever heard:

“My family and I put every last bit of our combined technical know-how into making this production. This is the first song of Kevin’s I’d ever heard — I originally discovered it because it was produced by our mutual friend the late, great Richard Swift, and I’ve always really liked it, and I wanted to do it proper justice. So we rehearsed, and we set up a lot of stuff in a field in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.”

Report: Caris LeVert Is Out For The Pacers Play-In Game With The Hornets Due To Health And Safety Protocols

The first game of the inaugural NBA play-in tournament will see the Hornets and Pacers play in Indiana for the chance to stay alive for the 8-seed in the East. The winner of the game, which will be at 6:30 p.m. ET on TNT, will advance to play the loser of the Wizards-Celtics game on Thursday to get into a playoff series against the 76ers.

The Pacers are slight three-point home favorites, but that very well may change as they will be even more shorthanded than expected against Charlotte. While the Pacers were expecting to be without Myles Turner (and TJ Warren who has barely played this year), they will apparently also have to find a way to beat the Hornets without Caris LeVert, who The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports is in the league’s health and safety protocols.

As Shams notes, should the Pacers advance to the next game in the play-in, they would need to win that one without LeVert and, should they somehow pull off that feat, they would likely be without LeVert for the first two games at least of a playoff series with Philadelphia. That’s a major loss, as LeVert is averaging just over 20 points per game since joining the Pacers, accounting for a big chunk of Indiana’s offensive attack. Without him, even more of the scoring load will shift to Domantas Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon, with Doug McDermott and Justin Holiday likely being called on to try and pick up some of the slack against the Hornets.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

This week in the best new pop music saw some exciting album previews. Olivia Rodrigo dropped a pop punk-inspired anthem, Tones And I shared her first new song of the year, and Jorja Smith released an anticipated project.

Each week, Uproxx rounds up the best new pop releases. Listen up.

Olivia Rodrigo — “Good 4 U”

Olivia Rodrigo is just a few days away from releasing her highly-anticipated debut album Sour. Ahead of her appearance on SNL last Saturday, Rodrigo shared another look at her varied songwriting with the pop punk-inspired track “Good 4 U.” The song is somewhat of a departure from her previous releases, trading in tender ballads for an energetic kiss-off tune, and points to the singer’s multifaceted talent.

Tones And I — “Won’t Sleep”

With her first new single of the year, Australian musician Tones And I leans into a dark pop sound with her eerie track “Won’t Sleep.” The song showcases the singer’s whimsical approach to songwriting, imagining a nightmarish soirée attended by monsters to draw inspiration for the hypnotizing track. But despite the spooky vibe, the song is really about her quarantine experience. “I loved writing this song and playing around with the production, the bass, and the drums,” she said. “It’s a song about me and my friends staying home and partying through lockdown.”

Jorja Smith — “Bussdown” Feat. Shaybo

This week saw the release of Jorja Smith’s Be Right Back EP, her first-released project since the singer’s breakout debut effort Lost & Found. The project arrived with the effortlessly smooth number “Bussdown” featuring UK rapper Shaybo. Leaning on pared down production, the song finds Smith sings of working hard to enjoy the finer things in life.

Skrillex — “Too Bizarre” Feat. Swae Lee and Siiickbrain

Skrillex is making a lively return. The famed EDM producer dropped not one, but two separate tracks this week, which included the snappy tune “Too Bizarre.” Proving he’s more relevant than ever, the guitar-leaning track moves away from the DJ’s signature dubstep sound into radio-ready territory.

Alaina Castillo — “Pocket Locket”

Pop up-and-comer Alaina Castillo released part one of her debut album, Parallel Universe, after teasing the swooning effort with a handful of singles. Album opener “Pocket Locket” offers a preview of the album’s sound, showcasing the singer’s saccharine vocals and confident flow over a skittering beat.

Cautious Clay — “Wildfire”

Continuing to gear up for the release of his album Deadpan Love, Cautious Clay offers another genre-bending tune. “Wildfire” is a contrast to Clay’s previous groove-driven releases. It’s a stripped-down guitar ballad featuring sparse production that leaves room for Clay’s tender vocal delivery. “‘Wildfire’ explores the fact that people’s intentions sometimes get lost in translation,” he said of the single. “Good intention is not always enough to prevent people’s emotions and insecurities from spiraling. Subtle signals or cues can unintentionally ignite emotions—like a brush fire.”

Daya — “The Difference”

Grammy Award-winning singer Daya returns to share The Difference EP, her first proper project since her debut album five years ago. It opens with thumping and club-ready track “The Difference,” which contrasts lovelorn lyrics with an addictive and up-tempo beat. About the EP, Daya says she wanted to capture all the “fleeting moments of regret, desire, loneliness, and sadness while spending more time with myself than I ever have before at home during quarantine.”

Audrey Nuna — “Blossom”

22-year-old musician Audrey Nuna has made a name for herself with music that switches between captivating raps and soaring refrains. Her new single “Blossom” is no different. Officially announcing her upcoming 10-track project Liquid Breakfast, “Blossom” opens with her quick-tempoed flow before showcasing her fluttering vocals. Under the surface, the song has a personal meaning and even features a snippet of her grandmother’s voice.

Renforshort — “Fall Apart” Feat. Glaive

Singer-songwriter Renforshort teamed up with recent hyperpop breakout star Glaive for the fiery tune “Fall Apart.” Marking Renforshort’s first production credit, the pop punk-leaning tune features stormy synths, dissonant guitars, and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about picking yourself up after a broken heart.

Ellise — “Chaotic”

After honing her sound and vampiric aesthetic for several years, alt pop singer Ellise shares her debut album Chaotic. The project’s title track offers a fitting preview of the effort. It’s both gloomy and vulnerable, melting together Y2K influences with a modern twist and contrasting her bubbly vocals with lyrics about a chaotic relationship.

Some of the artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Rob McElhenney And Ryan Reynolds Will Chronicle Their Attempt At Running A Soccer Team In An FX Docuseries

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ decision to buy a soccer team together caught the sports and entertainment worlds by surprise, that considering neither one of them have experience in running a sports team, and the two actors barely seemed to know each other, which turned out to be more true than people realized. During an interview with Men’s Health back in April, McElhenney and Reynolds both admitted that they only recently got to know each other via text messages, and at that point, had still never even met each other in person yet.

Well, it looks like they solved that last part because the two just dropped a new video announcing their new FX docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham, which will follow the two actors as they chronicle their attempts to run a soccer team despite never working together before in their lives. And judging by the promo, both actors will bring their comedic sensibilities to the project as they already run into problems with a Welsh translator, who’s not entirely thrilled to be working with two Hollywood guys who are trying their hand at soccer.

Here’s the official synopsis via FX:

In 2020, Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) teamed up to purchase the team in the hopes of turning the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The worry? Rob and Ryan have no experience in football or working with each other. That said, they are serious about their investment in Wrexham, improving the club and doing right by the townspeople.

Despite focusing on two random actors buying a foreign soccer team, some people are already pumped for the series and already have some pretty high expectations for McElhenney:

T.I. And Tiny Respond To An LAPD Investigation Of Their Alleged Drugging And Sexual Assault

In recent months, two more women have come forward and accused T.I. and his wife Tiny of sexual misconduct. The alleged incidents took place in 2005 and 2010, with both women accusing the couple of drugging and sexually assaulting them. Now, LAPD has launched an investigation into the reports and T.I. and Tiny’s lawyers have responded.

The New York Times first reported allegations of sexual assault back in late February, claiming lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn represented eleven women who claim they’ve been victimized by the couple. The two additional women are also being represented by Blackburn, and according to Billboard and The Daily Beast, the attorney has successfully pressured the LAPD to open an investigation into the incident that allegedly took place in 2005. The accuser claims T.I. drugged her drink before she was taken to a hotel room and sexually assaulted after repeatedly refusing the couple’s advances.

Responding to the reports of LAPD’s investigation, T.I. and Tiny’s lawyer Steve Sadow issued a statement on behalf of the couple:

“The Harrises have not spoken to or been contacted by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) or, indeed, any member of law enforcement from any other jurisdiction in the country. Even assuming the story in the Daily Beast is close to accurate, it appears the LAPD ‘accuser’ has chosen once again to remain anonymous, thereby preventing us from being in a position to disprove or refute her allegations – or even examine them. Meanwhile, although we now appear for the first time to have the name of an ‘accuser’ who supposedly filed a police report with LVPD, we have absolutely zero details about her or her claim.”

Chris Bosh And Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon Once Smoked Weed Together And Talked About Guitars At Glastonbury

Over the weekend, following the 2020 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, the 2021 class was revealed. The roster of future inductees is headlined by Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Chris Webber, and Ben Wallace. Naturally, this news has people looking back on the lives and careers of those legendary players, which has prompted an also-legendary Bosh story from Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Vernon’s tale offers a peek into Bosh’s personal life, as he revealed today that he and Bosh once met at the Glastonbury festival, where they talked about acoustic guitars and smoked weed together. Vernon shared the story (which he had forgotten until hearing about Bosh getting into the Hall) on his personal account, tweeting, “Watching ESPN this morning… they got Chris Bosh on. Nice dude. They’re putting him in the HOF. I Smoked weed and talked acoustic guitar with him backstage at Glastonbury with him. I had forgotten that. Now I can’t forget!”

The facts seem to indicate that this interaction went down at the 2015 festival. Bon Iver wasn’t on the lineup, but Vernon was in attendance and popped up during sets from Kanye West and The Staves. Also that weekend, Bosh was seen hanging out with West backstage. So, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that 2015 was the year Bosh and Vernon crossed paths.
