While childcare challenges facing women in the workplace have come under the spotlight during the pandemic, the issue isn’t new. As one of the only nations in the world without guaranteed paid parental leave as well as one without broadly subsidized childcare, parents often have to weigh childcare costs with their earnings and make tough choices between work and family.
In academia, where graduate students are working toward a career but aren’t fully into one yet, figuring out how to balance family and studies on a limited income is also a challenge, which is why one MIT professor’s photo of an addition to his lab has people cheering.
Troy Littleton, professor of biology at MIT, shared a photo of a portable crib squeezed in between a desk and a cabinet and wrote:
“My favorite new equipment purchase for the lab – a travel crib to go in my office so my graduate student can bring her 9-month old little girl to work when necessary and I get to play with her while her mom gets some work done. Win-win!!”

A flood of comments praising the professor poured in, as people shared how their own professors or bosses had similarly supported them and their children.
@heatherfarmer__ @JTroyLittleton Mine did the same! And got slightly annoyed when we found daycare. 🙂
— Dr Hanne (not that type of doctor – no seriously) (@StandingHannah) 1620470113.0
The praise reinforced the fact that pursuing a profession and building a family are not mutually exclusive endeavors and that creating ways to help parents—especially mothers, who tend to be the primary caregivers during the earliest years of a child’s life—balance both things is a valuable move. While bringing a baby to work wouldn’t work under all circumstances, allowing for the option when it can work can make all the difference in the world.
@Dr_Perreault @JTroyLittleton It takes a village to raise a baby!! 💪🏻💪🏻
Interestingly, sprinkled throughout the comments of praise were comments of befuddlement from people outside of the U.S. Questions like “Don’t you have paid leave when you have a baby?” and “You mean there aren’t free childcare facilities on-site?” from Europeans, Australians, etc. brought home the fact that this childcare/career conundrum is largely a uniquely American thing.
@ferruz_noelia @JTroyLittleton You’re not an American, are you??

Like many “feel good” stories of individuals stepping up to fill a hole where a social safety net should be, professor Littleton’s post almost seems a bit sad in light of these comments. It would be great if we could structure our systems to be more family-friendly as a matter of policy. At the same time, his offering a way for his student to continue her studies while taking care of her baby illustrates a sense of understanding and compassion our society needs more of.
Thank you, professor Littleton, for serving as an example and opening people’s minds to what is possible.
Dave Chappelle is all about the Texas life these days. He even decided to tour in the Lone Star State with Joe Rogan during a pandemic, a development that led to Chappelle contracting COVID, but the pair’s friendship doesn’t appear to have hit a similar bump at all. Rather, Chappelle stopped in for Friday’s edition of The Joe Rogan Experience (on Spotify), and they (naturally) shot the sh*t for over three hours.
In the process, the two chatted about Elon Musk’s (then-upcoming) controversial booking on SNL, but another nugget of interest surfaced: the (alleged) revelation that Chappelle used to purchase weed from Idris Elba, long before the Luther star became famous. Really, that’s exactly what Chappelle said: “Idris Elba, the famous actor, used to be a security guard at [comedy club] Caroline’s… I used to buy weed from him.”
This isn’t too hard to believe, right? Idris became quite the club guy, not only on the comedy front but while moving into DJ territory as well. If only one could have stopped the weed-fever dream that may have led to Turn Up Charlie on Netflix.
Meanwhile, format of the Rogan-Chappelle episode was as non-formatty as was to be expected. The rambling topics included life in post-Trump America, cancel culture, and the controversy over some of Chappelle’s old comedy specials that are now streaming on Netflix. “Everyone was saying that the specials were dated, because there were jokes in there that they considered transphobic,” Chappelle said. “I still don’t think those jokes are transphobic, I’m not gonna have that discussion but if I ever have to, boy I’m ready.”
At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, one of social media’s most prevalent tropes was people encouraging each other to use the quarantine to finish their respective projects such as books, albums, or other heavy works. As it happens, it appears plenty of authors did just that; not only are there two books about Mac Miller coming out in the next year or so, but there are also books coming from Questlove, Dave Grohl, and more. Today, Simon and Schuster made another book available for pre-order: Changes: An Oral History of Tupac Shakur by New Yorker writer Sheldon Pearce.
According to the promotional copy on the publisher’s website, Pearce interviewed “dozens” of people who knew Tupac in life, from the bold-faced marquee names to lesser-known individuals who interacted with the revolutionary rap icon. Pearce spoke to such individuals as Tupac’s high school drama teacher, one of his co-stars from a 1983 production of Raisin In The Sun, and one of his partners in a nonprofit devoted to nurturing young artists.
Changes is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of ‘Pac’s death in 1996, and well as what would have been his 50th year of life. It’s due June 8, 2021 via Simon & Schuster and you can pre-order it here.

The Weeknd released After Hours back in 2019, but despite its age, the album continues to have a significant impact on popular music: Last week, a new Ariana Grande-featuring version of “Save Your Tears” found its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Now, on the chart dated May 15, the single remains in the No. 1 spot for a second consecutive week.
— billboard charts (@billboardcharts) May 10, 2021
As a reminder, some trivia from when the song first topped the charts last week: “Save Your Tears” is the sixth No. 1 song for both The Weeknd and Grande, following “Can’t Feel My Face,” “The Hills,” “Starboy,” “Heartless,” and “Blinding Lights” for the former and “Thank U, Next,” “7 Rings,” “Stuck With U,” “Rain On Me,” and “Positions” for the latter. Also, After Hours the first album to yield three No. 1 singles since Drake’s Scorpion did so in 2018. Grande is also just the second artist with three No. 1 duets following Paul McCartney: Grande’s “Stuck With U” and “Rain On Me” are collaborations with Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, respectively.
Elsewhere on the chart, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Silk Sonic single “Leave The Door Open” continues to hover around the top at No. 2, Billie Eilish’s “Your Power” premieres at No. 9, and The Kid Laroi and Miley’s Cyrus’ “Without You” rises to its new peak at No. 10.

One of Hollywood’s biggest stars has cut ties with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Shortly after it was announced that NBC will not air the Golden Globes due to the HFPA’s lack of diversity, including not a single Black member, Deadlinereported that Tom Cruise has “delivered back” his Golden Globe trophies. The actor won Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for Born on the Fourth of July, Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Jerry Maguire, and Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for Magnolia.
“Sources said this just happened, as the Golden Globes house of cards continues to crumble and NBC cancelled next year’s broadcast. Cruise becomes the latest star to speak out, including Netflix, Amazon, and NBC among others over the slow crawl the organization is making to reform its lack of diversity,” the Deadline report reads.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a small group of international journalists that decide the Golden Globes nominees and winners every year.
Scarlett Johansson has also spoken out against the HFPA, calling it an organization that “was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition, and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.” The Black Widow actress also said that she’s faced “sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment.”
Is society evolves, it seems mental health and the upkeep of it become a more and more important and valued topic. For example, May is Mental Health Month and the Child Mind Institute has launched “Getting Better Together,” which they describe as “a campaign featuring inspiring, homemade videos from celebrities sharing their personal stories to support kids who are especially struggling during the pandemic and lend a powerful voice to help eliminate stigma, inspire hope, and encourage kids to ask for help.” Now, they’ve gotten Bebe Rexha on board.
Rexha shared a quick video for the campaign, in which she touches on her own mental health journey and offers suggestions for those having a tough time. She says, “I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression and mental illness since I was super young and it’s something I’m very vocal about. And the one thing that has gotten me through is definitely therapy and talking to friends and family and music. So if you’re going through a rough time right now and you really need somebody to speak to, especially during this pandemic, I would highly suggest a therapist, working out, meditating, talking to friends, painting, riding a bike, or even going for a walk.”
The organization describes itself on its website, “The Child Mind Institute is an independent, national nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Our teams work every day to deliver the highest standards of care, advance the science of the developing brain and empower parents, professionals and policymakers to support children when and where they need it most.”

Especially if you’re an “enhancement smoker,” like Jon Stewart’s character in Half Baked. Someone who “thinks marijuana makes every activity that much better.” Because it means you’ve got a lot of situations that you need to find the right weed for.
You know who else is an enhancement smoker? Me.
I believe that at the right dose and with the right delivery method there’s a sweet spot where most of life can be more enjoyable thanks to the presence of cannabinoids. And since I’ve been developing my various methods of enhancement for years now, I thought it might be time to share a few. Below you’ll find 20 occasions for getting high, paired with 20 different cannabis products that are guaranteed to provide an elevated experience.

Connected is easily one of the top cannabis brands in California. Slow Lane, one of their best strains and the first to win the best indoor prize at the 2021 Emerald Cup, is a pair between Connected’s Biscotti and Sugar Cone strains. Think of a Ferrero Rocher — in a joint.
The first pull is creamy and heavy — that’s from the Sugar cone — and the second is smooth and savory, thanks to the Biscotti. This strain is purple through and through, in look, smell, and taste.
Bottom line:
Overall, this strain provides a deep body high that will leave your eyelids heavy and your body sinking into the couch. That’s a good thing. There’s a euphoric head high, too, if you’re not too mellow to notice it.

A bonus? The herbs also taste delicious.
Bottom line:
For anyone looking for a different kind of high with more muted effects, smoking cannabis and other herbals is the move. The tastes and smells offer a break from smoking just straight flower all the time.
For a Painting, Pottery, or Any Kind of Visual Art Experience — Canndescent Create Pre-Rolls
When it’s time to get creative, like when painting or doing pottery, find a muse in Canndescent’s Create pre-rolled joints. The brand, which produces high-quality indoor flower that is labeled according to feeling, rather than a cheeky strain name or anything else, releases few details about the genetics behind the flower.
But rest assured that Canndescent’s Create strain produces an engaging but uplifting high that gets the mind and body moving.
Bottom line:
These pre-rolls are available in single effect 1-gram or single effect mini pre-roll six-pack boxes.

Three cents from every purchase is donated to various nonprofits and charities that Ladies of Paradise supports, too.

The Cloudious9 GRAVI7y cannabis bundles combine two product groupings — the first of their kind to include consumption hardware and legally sold flower. The idea behind the was to bring the flower and gear shopping experiences together. They end up in the same place, so why not roll it up into one product bundle?

The aptly-named Ritual Case is ideal for anyone who needs options — there’s plenty of room for papers, flower, tools, joints, a vaporizer, a lighter, and other smoking goodies.

Bottom line:

For When You Feel Like Cooking…With Weed — Ardent FX
The Ardent FX can also be called the “Easy Bake cannabis oven.” This all-in-one, portable cannabis kitchen fully activates any plant material — like herb or hemp flower, kief, or concentrate — and has settings to infuse, cook and bake right inside. With the push of a button, the FX allows you to decarboxylate (the heating process that activates cannabinoids) THC, CBD, CBG and infuse oils, milks, and creams, and bake edibles.

For When You Don’t Want to Smoke — PAX Labs Era Life
PAX Labs recently launched the Era Life, which was created for the on-the-go consumer. Similar to the popular Era device, the Era Life features a high-performing battery and an even sleeker design than the OG, if that’s possible.
Any PAX Era pods will also work with this device and it comes in four new colors: onyx, grass, blaze and indigo.
Bottom line:
Pax is one of the best portable vaporizer makers in the biz. Everything they make is worth a spin. This is easy to transport anywhere and almost looks like a Juul apparatus, meaning those who want to puff in peace can do so without inviting additional scrutiny.

Bottom line:
There’s nothing better than getting in character sometimes, but dressing up as an office worker just to watch TV is admittedly not all that fun after a while. Roll one up Michael Scott-style and sink into the couch, instead.
For When You Want to Have Sex — Humboldt Apothecary’s Love Potion No. 7
THC is a vasodilator, which means it widens blood vessels and increases blood flow. That just happens to also be the physical process that creates an orgasm, especially for those with vaginas. Love potions may or may not be real, but this tincture is one of the best stabs at one.
Humboldt Apothecary’s Love Potion No. 7, which is taken orally or can be applied to genitals directly, increases euphoria and supports blood flow to the nether regions, resulting in higher physical arousal and potentially stronger and longer-sustained orgasms. There is 250mg THC in the bottle, total, which works out to about 8.4mg per dropper. For those who need help dulling pain, there is also a CBD option.
Additional botanicals provide a tingling feeling, also heightening arousal.
Bottom line:
Using this oil on genitals will not result in a high, but it will result in increased sensation. Taking it orally will definitely give you a buzz, depending on your tolerance. Choose your own sex adventure with this versatile oil.
Kin Slips’ sublingual strips, which come in 10-packs of 5-milligram film squares akin to Listerine strips, are a nice way to get stoned without needing to smoke or vape. They also come without the sugar-punch or slow onset time of an edible, but with all the same effects. These translucent strips are intended to be placed under the tongue for fast absorption — usually within minutes.
Bottom line:
The best part? These leave a minty taste in the mouth. Combining hygiene with a mellow high is a winning combination.
Things just went from bad to worse for the Hollywood Foreign Press Associations as NBC has officially announced that it will not air the Golden Globes awards show in 2022 until the embattled association enacts its promised reforms. Following accusations of racism and a significant diversity problem (along with questionable financial practices) the HFPA has been under intense scrutiny thanks to an expose from the LA Times that triggered the outing of former HFPA president Phil Berk, who was previously accused of sexually assaulting actor Brendan Fraser.
While the association has offered up a list of reforms it plans to enact, NBC is giving the Golden Globes a year off to see if the HFPA can get its act together. If if it does, the awards show will return in 2023. Via Variety:
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
NBC’s announcement arrives on the heels of several public moves to pressure the HFPA to clean its house. WarnerMedia, Amazon, and Netflix have all announced boycotts of the Golden Globes, specifically over concerns that the HFPA’s list of reforms does not go far enough. Celebrities are also getting in the act. Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have signed statements encouraging the HFPA to honor its motto of “Unity Without Discrimination of Religion or Race,” while Tom Cruise has made perhaps the biggest move by returning all three of his Golden Globe trophies in protest on Monday.
The last 40 years of the Los Angeles Lakers will get highlighted in an upcoming docuseries from Hulu. The nine-part project, which currently does not have a name, is slated to be released sometime in 2022 and will be executive produced by Jeanie Buss; Antoine Fuqua; Haven Entertainment’s Kevin Mann, Michael Mann, and Brendan Bragg; Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman of the Los Angeles Media Fund; and Lakers executive Linda Rambis.
The series will begin in 1979, the year that Jerry Buss took over ownership of the Lakers, and run through last year’s championship in the NBA’s Orlando Bubble. Per a release, a number of current and former players and coaches — including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Phil Jackson, Magic Johnson, Pat Riley, and Shaquille O’Neal — will be interviewed as part of the project.
“When Dr. Buss bought the Lakers in 1979, he sat alone at center court of the Forum and thought of all the possibilities,” Buss said in a statement. “But even in his wildest dreams, my father could not have imagined what the next decades would bring for our organization, our league and our city of Los Angeles. I am thrilled that the true story of the Lakers will finally be shared with the world — and that we are in such capable hands with Hulu and Antoine, a director whose storytelling I’ve admired for years.”
“We are proud to bring this docuseries to the world and shed light on the legendary history of the Lakers,” Fuqua said in the same statement. “This expansive look into one of the greatest sports franchises of all time is a project we all feel deeply passionate about.”
