‘SNL’ Parodied Movies Like ‘Ammonite’ And ‘Portrait Of A Lady On Fire’ With The Fake Trailer For ‘Lesbian Period Drama’

Carey Mulligan spent some of her stint hosting Saturday Night Live making light of how few light films she does, including the movie for which she’s currently Oscar-nominated, Promising Young Woman. But she also made some room to make light of serious movies, too. One of the highlights of the night was the fake trailer for a subgenre that’s taken off in the last few years — an art-house staple that gave way to the parody entitled Lesbian Period Drama.

The target was movies like Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Ammonite, and The World to Come — quiet, gentle, happy-sad movies about women in love in the distant past, when such things were truly verboten. The trailer finds Mulligan and Heidi Gardner as tight-lipped women in a remote seaside manse, sometime in the 19th century. There’s hesitant conversation. There’s “12 lines of dialogue” over a “two and a half hour runtime.” There’s rock picking and carrot washing. There’s “Academy Award-winning glance choreography,” with our two leads exchanging furtive looks. And there’s lots of wind.

Kate McKinnon even swings by, as the much gabbier, tuxedo-clad ex to Gardner’s character, who mocks the token graphic sex scene played by two straight actresses and helmed by a male director. Was it as funny as “Satan’s Alley,” the horny monk trailer from Tropic Thunder, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Tobey Maguire? Not quite, but not for lack of trying.

Justin Bieber’s ‘Justice’ Returns To No. 1 On The ‘Billboard’ Albums Chart

Justin Bieber made his fans wait five years for new music, but it appears to have been worth it: Changes, released early last year, continued a decade-long streak of No. 1 consecutive projects. Just over a year after delivering that album, the singer returned with Justice, which also topped the charts. A month after this project arrived, it made its return to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated April 17.

Justice reclaimed its crown thanks to 74,000 units sold with 67,000 being streaming equivalent album units and 6,000 pure album sales. In making its return to the top, Justice becomes Bieber’s first album to spend multiple weeks atop the charts since his 2010 effort My World 2.0. A large part of the album’s success can be credited to Bieber’s track “Peaches,” featuring Giveon and Daniel Caesar. The single debuted at No. 1, making him the first male solo artist to have a song and album debut at the top of two different charts in the same week. As of last week, the song was positioned at No. 2.

Other notable appearance on this week’s albums chart include Demi Lovato landing her seventh consecutive top-five album after Dancing With The Devil… The Art of Starting Over debuted at No. 2, while Lil Tjay posts up at No. 5 with his sophomore album Destined 2 Win.

Michael B. Jordan Has Explained Why Sylvester Stallone Isn’t Coming Back For ‘Creed III’

Last week came surprising news: Sylvester Stallone wouldn’t be returning for Creed III, the spin-off series sprung from Rocky, the franchise that first made his name. Why? No reason was given. But in a new interview with IGN, the threequel’s star — and also its director — Michael B. Jordan opened up about Sly’s exit. And one reason is that the series is going to be more specifically about his pugilistic hero, Adonis, not Rocky Balboa.

“I think that Sly let it be known that he wasn’t coming back for this one but I think, you know, his essence and his spirit… there’s always going to be a little bit of Rocky within Adonis,” Jordan told the publication. “But this is a Creed franchise, and we really want to build this story and this world around him moving forward. So, it’s always respect and always a shit-ton of love for what he’s built, but we really want to push and navigate Adonis forward and the family that he created. So, hopefully you guys will love what I’m thinking… what we’re cooking up. I think it’s going to be something special.”

Actually, Stallone’s move isn’t that surprising. Creed II, which the legendary actor also co-wrote, gave Rocky a nice ending — not a death, but a peace his character hasn’t felt in the over four decades he’s been a beloved part of cinema. Stallone even suggested he was retiring Rocky. But he’s said that kind of stuff before. Back in 1996 he swore Daylight would be his farewell to action movies, and that didn’t last long. So maybe we’ll hear from Rocky again one day, and we don’t mean a postcard.

Chika Announces Her Retirement And Cites The ‘Mental Toll’ Of The Industry As A Reason

Success doesn’t always lead to happiness — something that Chika has unfortunately experienced. Despite dropping impressive projects and even landing a Grammy nomination, things haven’t been perfect for the Alabama native. It seems like things have only gotten worse, as she took to Twitter on Sunday to share a message announcing her retirement.

today, i shared that I was thinking of retiring because the mental toll being in the industry has taken on me is not something you bounce back from easily. i’ve told my team, i’ve told my therapist, i’ve told friends and acquaintances. today i told twitter. what followed was a hoard of psychotic fans rejoicing in the decline of my mental health, harassing me as if I spoke to them first. when you have depression, the negative self talk you have towards yourself is deafening. now imagine a slew of weirdos dogpiling on top of thoughts you already have to fight off yourself. it’s not f*cking cool, it’s not “trolling” or “stan culture,” you’re pushing people to a point of no return. and no, i don’t feel bad for wishing death on people who sh*t like that cuz you deserve the same fate as the people you effect.

with that said, I’m out. if it doesn’t work, i’ll try again. idc. have fun. i never liked it here anyway.

The message came after a Instagram Live session in which she responded to fans’ feelings about her announcement. “I came on here and said I was retiring because that’s where I’m at — physically, mentally and emotionally,” she said. “And you stupid b*tches flooded my comments immediately, not know what the f*ck I’m going through. You want me to give a good god damn about you and your stupid ass fifth grade stan friends?”

Chika is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Kid Cudi Showed Love To ‘That Weird Little Flute’ In Rap Songs In An ‘SNL’ Sketch

It was just a few years ago that Future’s “Mask Off,” and the infectious flute that was present on the song, took the music world by storm. The track is just one of many rap records to feature a heavy presence of the woodwind instrument. It’s a quality that caught the eye of Kid Cudi and a few Saturday Night Live cast members as they delivered a sketch in honor of “that weird little flute.”

Cudi, along with Pete Davidson and Chris Redd, joined forces for a song that finds them flaunting their own flutes and expressing their love for it. Later on in the skit, Timothée Chalamet joins in on the fun musical sketch.

In addition to the sketch, Cudi was the musical guest for the SNL episode. He performed “Sad People” and “Tequila Shots” and the former caught the attention of most viewers as Cudi stepped on stage rocking an Off-White floral dress, noticeably similar to the one Kurt Cobain famously wore. Following the performance, Cudi shared his intention with the dress in a pair of tweets. “Virgil designed the dress for me. I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt w a floral print sundress and this man made a masterpiece,” he said. “Thank You @virgilabloh ur a f*ckin genius!! Love you man we did it!!!” In a second tweet, he added, “Im doin a collection w Off White and the dress will be included!!”

Trump Gave A Deranged Speech Where He Called Mitch McConnell A ‘Dumb Son Of A B*tch’ At A Conference Supposed To Be About Republican Unity

Remember Donald Trump? It’s been four months since he was kicked off of most of social media, including Twitter, his favorite. We barely hear from him anymore, and when we do it tends to be half-assed press releases or the occasional public speech, where he mostly plays the hits. On Saturday he headlined a weekend conference for Republican donors, and if anyone who thought he might have chilled since January were in for a rude awakening.

As per USA Today, the former president delivered a deranged speech in which he railed against his usual enemies and re-aired debunked election fraud lies.

Trump’s most vociferous target was Mitch McConnell, the former Senate Majority Leader, who he’s railed against ever since he refused to overturn an election in his favor. Trump called him a “stone cold loser,” and at one point crowed, “If that were Schumer instead of this dumb son of a bitch Mitch McConnell they would never allow it to happen. They would have fought it.”

Mike Pence, too, got dragged, too, for refusing to hold up the election results, which he couldn’t do anyway. Ditto Governor Brian Kemp, who did the same in his state of Georgia.

Trump also went after immigrants. “They’re coming in from the Middle East. They’re not sending their best people,” he told the crowd, paraphrasing things he’s said before. “You have murderers, you have rapists, you have drug dealers.”

He also once more tried to baselessly take credit for the vaccines currently being rolled out, millions every day, saying it should be called the “Trumpcine.”

The conference’s ostensible theme? Republican unity.

Even after the events of January 6, Trump remains popular amongst Republican voters. A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 60% continue to believe his false claims about election fraud, and 65% think he should run in 2024. But for now, at least he’s no longer rage-tweeting, or employed.

Miles Bridges Had The Dunk Of The Year On Poor Clint Capela

Miles Bridges has been on a mission this season. No, that mission has nothing to do with keeping the Hornets in the playoff race or turning himself into a star. While those are assuredly in his plans, his goal for the 2020-21 NBA season has been to dunk on the entire NBA.

Bridges has been on a tear this year with dunk contest caliber dunks seemingly every game. On Sunday, Bridges had his best one yet. Going against the Hawks, Bridges was met in the paint by big man Clint Capela. Now, Capela is one of the better rim protectors in the NBA so if anyone was going to stop Bridges it was him. He failed. He failed miserably, as Bridges took away his soul in the poster dunk of the year.

Look at how far back Bridges cocks this dunk. That is full arm extension and then Capela bounces off of him like he’s a pillow someone threw at Bridges mid-jump. Dunks like this happen maybe once or twice a season if that and we were all lucky to witness that.

This is a message to the entire NBA. When Bridges enters the lane with the ball you have two choices. Get out of the way or be ready for a poster, because this man is vicious.

Now, the good news for Capela is that the Hawks were able to pull of the comeback win, in large part due to his own defensive exploits beyond his unfortunate demise at the hands of Bridges.

Report: James Wiseman’s Season Could Be Over Due To A Right Meniscus Tear

Warriors rookie James Wiseman has not had the year that he or the Warriors were hoping from him. While big men are expected to have rookie struggles, the Warriors were hoping for someone that could provide an immediate impact. His inconsistent play has not matched the expectation of a team that has playoff hopes, although the flashes of brilliance have provided a glimpse at what he could be.

Unfortunately for Wiseman his year may be over before he’s able to build more positive momentum. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Wiseman has suffered a torn right meniscus that, while the Warriors and Wiseman will get second opinions on, they fear will cause him to miss the rest of the regular season.

Wiseman came to the Warriors in a unique situation. In a normal situation, the second overall pick of the draft would have an opportunity to make mistakes on the floor and get better through experience. The Warriors were in that position however due to a flurry of injuries, not because they were in a rebuilding situation. This is a team with an established core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. While Thompson suffered an Achilles injury before the season started, a team with those players is going to try and compete. As a result, Wiseman was thrust into a role that was bigger than he was likely ready for, and without the ability to work through rookie struggles in the way you would like.

Hopefully, Wiseman will recover quickly. Despite his struggles this year he’s still playing 21 minutes per game and as previously noted, has had some positive showings. He’s clearly a rotation player and someone the Warriors have been depending on to fill minutes. Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt, but seeing a young guy go down always has an extra layer of disappointment to it, as it’s now possible two of the top three picks from this year’s draft will be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Adam Sandler Is Proud Of ‘Happy Gilmore’ Caddie Look-Alike Will Zalatoris’ Masters Performance

Will Zalatoris has been one of the best stories of the 2021 Masters, as the 24-year-old out of Wake Forest is making his debut at golf’s most famous stateside major and found himself in the thick of things coming into Sunday at Augusta National.

Zalatoris was tied for second at 7-under entering the final round, four back of Hideki Matsuyama, and he had closed that gap to just one stroke after back-to-back birdies to open his round. The slender youngster from San Francisco has flowing blond, curly locks of hair and bears a striking resemblance to a golf pop culture legend — the caddie from Happy Gilmore. On Sunday, prior to Zalatoris’ 2:20 p.m. tee time, he got a vote of support from none other than Happy Gilmore himself, who noted that Mr. Gilmore is “very proud” of how his caddie is doing at the Masters.

Zalatoris himself is well aware of who he looks like, despite being born after Happy Gilmore came out in 1996, and has steered into it, including owning a wedge stamped with “Mr. Gilmore I’m your caddie.”

It has been a pretty wild week for Zalatoris, but getting a Twitter shoutout from Adam Sandler has to be among the cooler things to happen to him this week, although taking home a green jacket would be much, much cooler.
