Eminem Just Made One Of His Greatest Points

Eminem’s been at this rap thing for a very long time — and unfortunately, over the past few years, he’s started to show his age. While still as technically proficient as ever, the battle rap veteran has also seen his musical output over the last half-decade or so stultify, with only his most loyal fans appreciating his efforts at being “the best rapper” and not making “the best albums,” as he once put it.

And so, his latest, The Death Of Slim Shady, might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there is something interesting here. On the album’s opening track, “Renaissance,” Em does something that’s become rare for him, depending on who you ask: He makes a great point. In a diverting excursion “inside the mind of a hater,” the 51-year-old notes, “I don’t see no fans, all I see’s a bunch of complainers.” Over the course of the song, he expands on this concept, illustrating his true worry: That fans caught up in nitpicking their favorite rappers won’t appreciate what they’ve got ’til it’s gone.

Lord knows, rap fans love complaining about a perceived dearth of care and craftsmanship when it comes to the art of rhyme. It seems every decade, there’s a new subgenre of rap to rail against: When I was coming up, it was “ringtone rap.” More recently, “mumble rap” has been the target of so many criticisms, while elders of the rap game, from Kool Moe Dee to Joe Budden, have always decried the rise of each successive wave of youngsters who rejected tradition, rewrote the rules of rhyme, or otherwise broke from established norms of hip-hop.

Yet, while doing so, they seemingly overlook so many of the contemporary rappers who seemingly deliver exactly what they want. When rap critics deplored the culture’s slide into criminality in the ’90s in efforts to feed the hunger for “thug” imagery, so-called “conscious rappers” like Common, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest were ridiculed — if not outright ignored — by the mainstream. When “jiggy rap” ruled the airwaves, B-boy traditionalists like Mos Def and Talib Kweli toiled away on the underground circuit — the same circuit that spawned Eminem himself.

Even Kendrick Lamar, who Em name-checks in his “Renaissance” verse (“‘Kendrick’s album was cool, but it didn’t have any bangers’,” says the mind of the hater), has pointed this out in his own discography. On “Hood Politics,” from his 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick raps, “Everybody want to talk about who this and who that / Who the realest and who wack, or who white or who black / Critics want to mention that they miss when hip-hop was rappin’ / Motherf*cker, if you did, then Killer Mike’d be platinum,” acknowledging how the Atlanta rapper’s commercial reception rarely lived up to his critical acclaim.

On “Renaissance,” Em drives the point home, name-checking a slew of other alternative or underground ’90s rap acts, along with some of the better-known ones to illustrate how quickly time sweeps away artifacts that aren’t appreciated enough to be preserved. Wise Intelligent and Cella Dwellas are two acts with impeccable reputations for potent, well-crafted rhymes, but the height of either act’s commercial reception was Cella Dwellas’ 1996 debut Realms ‘n Reality, which only peaked at 160 on the Billboard 200. They haven’t put out anything since. Wise Intelligent’s last album was released in 2018, and truthfully, researching for this piece was my first time hearing about it.

Em also calls out Big Daddy Kane, who was once regarded one of the foremost lyricists in all of hip-hop, a pioneer who helped advance the technique used in rap by light years ahead of where it was when he first debuted in 1986. Yet, by 1994 — less than 10 years later — he was being treated as an also-ran, with the lukewarm reception of his sixth album Daddy’s Home prompting him to take a long break from releasing music. He still raps, making occasional guest appearances on projects from the long (long, long, long) list of rappers he’s inspired — including Little Brother, MF DOOM, Rapsody, The Roots, and more. But he hasn’t made a new album since 1998’s Veteranz’ Day, and he’s largely considered a relic of the Golden Era, not a titan of the culture like proteges Jay-Z, Eminem, and Black Thought.

Uproxx’s Elliott Wilson called 2024 the best year in hip-hop, hands down. Putting A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie at No. 5 on his best albums list and overlooking albums from LA County natives like Schoolboy Q and Vince Staples notwithstanding, I agree. So, apparently, does Eminem, who goes out of his way to give a nod to J. Cole’s Might Delete Later. But with all these great rappers making great albums, rap fans seem caught up in their disappointment about projects they don’t like or that fell short, or in the contextual circumstances of those albums, like dismissing J. Cole for bowing out of the Kendrick Lamar/Drake beef.

Eminem harps on the past on his latest album to warn us what could happen in the future. Rap fans who’ve wanted lyrics to return to the spotlight have had a smorgasbord in 2024, but if they keep overlooking the good, they’ll only be left with the bad. At that point, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves.

Eminem’s Poignant New Song ‘Temporary’ Features Vintage Childhood Recordings Of His Daughter Hailie

At one point in time, Eminem was the big bad wolf of hip-hop. To this day, the “Tobey” rapper doesn’t care who he offends or lyrically shoots at. But Eminem does have one soft spot, and it’s for his daughter, Hailie Jade.

Eminem seems to be excited to bury his alter ego, as seen in his latest album’s title, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). But there is another homecoming service atop his mind. On his song, “Temporary” featuring Skylar Grey, Eminem provides Hailie Jade with encouraging instruction on how to heal once he passes in real life.

“A lot of people ask me, am I afraid of death,” he says as the track opens. “The truth is, I think what scares me the most is not being able to say all the things I wanna say to you when I’m no longer here. So this song is for Hailie, for when that day comes.”

Throughout the track, Eminem sprinkled in throwback home audio clips of him and Hailie Jade. He playfully asks, “Where’s Hailie? Where’s she at?”

The eager then-toddler replied: “This ain’t Hailie, it’s a monster!”

Eminem fast forwards to present day to give his daughter of instructions for how to deal with his death: “Hailie Jade, I wrote you this song / To help you cope with life now that I’m gone. How should I start? Just wanna say look after Alaina, Stevie, and Uncle Nate / And sweetie, be strong.”

Listen to “Temporary” below.

The ‘Euphoria’ Gang, Including Zendaya And Sydney Sweeney, Is Officially Getting Back Together For Season 3

The Euphoria cast is very busy. Zendaya starred in two of 2024’s best movies, hopefully with Dune Messiah on the horizon; Sydney Sweeney is everywhere; Hunter Schafer is going Cuckoo mode; Colman Domingo was nominated for an Oscar; and Jacob Elordi is traveling the globe looking for shoes that actually fit him (he’s very tall, you see). But somehow, they’ll find time in their packed schedules for another season of HBO‘s high school-set (for now) drama.

Euphoria season 3 will begin filming in January 2025 with all of the principal cast set to return.

“I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on Euphoria in January,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of HBO drama series and films, in a statement. “We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “HBO hasn’t set an airdate, but it’s unlikely that Euphoria would be ready to go before late next year, which would mean a gap of up to four years between seasons.”

But even if Euphoria isn’t back until 2026, HBO isn’t exactly lacking for 2025 shows: The Last of Us, The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones, Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and It prequel Welcome to Derry are all expected to return or premiere next year.

When (And Where) Will ‘Despicable Me 4’ Be On Streaming?

Minions
Universal

The Minions are back! Though, they never really left, but still. The little guys return to the big screen in Despicable Me 4, along with Gru and the gang.

In Despicable Me 4, Steve Carrell is back as Gru, the villain-turned-dad, while Kristen Wiig returns as Lucy, his wife. Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Madison Polan are set to return as the kids Margo, Edith, and Agnes, respectively, while Pierre Coffin returns to voice the Minions.

At this point, you’ve probably seen the rest of the franchise, which includes:

-2010’s Despicable Me
-2013’s Despicable Me 2
-2015’s Minions
-2017’s Despicable Me 3
-2022’s Minions: Rise of Gru

All of these movies are currently available on streaming, though they are on different platforms. As for the latest entry, Despicable Me 4 will probably land on Peacock approximately three to four months after its theatrical release. Since the movie was released on July 3rd, so it should be streaming around October or November 2024, at least for a little bit.

Then, thanks to a 2021 deal between Universal and Netflix, the movie will head to Netflix for ten months and then exclusively on Peacock for another four months. It’s the classic “Theater to Peacock to Netflix then back to Peacock” move that we’ve come to know and love.

And don’t worry — the Minions will be back again soon. They never really leave us alone for long.

When Does ‘House Of The Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 5 Come Out?

house of the dragon matt-smith-3
HBO/Max/WBD

Well, last week was a disaster for both Team Black and Team Green on House of the Dragon. As much as Rhaenys went out like a badass, this still means that Rhaenyra and the Dragonstone crew have lost a powerful chess piece in Meleys (not to mention Rhaenys) during Rook’s Rest (my goodness, that name works here), and I’m not convinced that a kamikaze mission was necessary when you cannot easily freaking replace a dragon.

We’ll find out how that works out for Team Black and what happened to Team Green’s version of the monarch very soon.

When Does ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 5 Come Out?

Look for the followup to Aegon’s crash and burn (and how Aemond deals with what he did) on Sunday, July 14 at 9:00pm EST and PST, both on HBO and Max.

Presumably, we’ll also see Ser Criston Cole continue to be completely useless while Daemon keeps doing whatever it is that he is doing at Harrenhal. Alys Rivers seems to be having fun with that, anyway.

Four more episodes remain in the season, which is already moving too fast, but the good news is that HBO is fully in this Westeros game, and we’ll see another Game of Thrones spin off debut in 2025.

Comedian’s perfect skit of ‘dumb’ things people say to moms is a roadmap for lost souls

When people have children there is all sorts of unsolicited advice and comments that seems to just spring out of people’s mouths. In most cases the people making the remarks are attempting to be helpful, but that doesn’t mean that it actually is helpful. Sometimes what is meant to be a kind word comes out sounding more hurtful than helpful.

Jimmy Knowles recently uploaded a skit that humorously highlights some of the unsupportive things people say to moms. The man plays all the parts in the skit, alternating between different moms and their “helpful” commenters. The video opens up with a mom sounding overwhelmed about how hard some of the days are with the kids. Immediately someone rebuts, “just remember, you chose this when you had them.”

Not helpful. It seems that sometimes people forget that moms are also humans who have bad days and a full range of emotions. But the next person who popped up to give out a little commentary wasn’t much better. Each advisor seems to be worse than the last.

Moms were completely on board with the message in Knowles’ video. Many shared their own experiences while others shared more helpful things people could say that are actually supportive.

“I’ve never heard someone say ‘you can’t complain about your work, you accepted their offer. Be grateful.’ Parenting is the only place this is the norm and it’s so delusional,” one person writes.

“I am the middle of 5 sisters. I’m all about supporting moms. Helpful things to say: – I’ll take the kids to the bookstore for a couple hours. – When can I come help out with housework? – I made dinner. 350 for 30 minutes. Salad isn’t dressed. – I’ve got 3 hours and I’m all yours. What can I do? Kitchen cleanup? Walk the dog? Bathroom duty? Feed the kids lunch while you go for a walk? Help!! Do something. Words are cheap. Actions are love,” someone shares.

“Here’s a great response- You work so hard honey. Thank you. Or from mom- you are such a good mom. I know it can be hard. How about you bring them over here and go have a date night or a quiet night at home,” another says.

“We. Just. Need. Validation. Y’all,” someone declares.

People aren’t asking for much, just actual help either when they’re feeling overwhelmed or before they reach the point of overwhelm. Validation and simply listening empathetically can go a long way.

Paris turned roads for cars into streets for school kids and it’s a great lesson in priorities

The people of Paris have made a bold move by transforming their city into one that puts kids first. Under the leadership of the city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, the School Streets initiative has a mandate to transform 300 streets into pedestrian walkways that cater to families walking to and from schools by 2026.

“About 180 School streets have been redesigned and completely pedestrianized. The idea, of course, is to cut the through traffic to get people to go to school on foot, children and parents,” Paul Lecroart, Senior urban planner for the Paris Metropolitan region, said in a video by Streetfilms.

Streetfilms produces short films that show how intelligent transportation design and policy can improve places to live, work, and play.

Paris School Streets: Safe for Children, Safe for Everyone

youtu.be

“You’re creating a totally different experience for the students. You’re reducing traffic noise, you’re reducing traffic pollution, and you’re giving the children a play space and a gathering space at the beginning and end, in the middle of their school days,” says Marcel Moran, PhD.

The new streets are adorned with greenery and fun, kid-friendly designs. Some have large, red storage sheds filled with toys and games for kids and their parents to play after school.

School Streets are created in two phases. In the first, they close the street to cars to see if it negatively affects traffic or causes problems for residents. Then, if it works out, the city does the proper planning and design to turn it from a road for cars to a school street by adding lush greenery and repaving it for pedestrians.

Residents sometimes hesitate to shut down the roads in front of their homes. But many enjoy the new transition to a place that encourages community. After the streets are repurposed, what was once a dangerous road now becomes a place where families congregate and kids can come and go as they please in an area designed to promote safety and mental health.

Want to fall asleep faster? People share their favorite hacks for nodding off quickly.

Sleep is a biological imperative for every human being, so it doesn’t seem like it should be a hard thing to do. For some people, however, falling asleep is a challenge, no matter how tired they are.

Experts have some advice for good sleep hygiene that helps lay the foundation for falling asleep, such as keeping a regular sleep schedule, following a consistent before-bed routine, dimming lights, avoiding screens late in the evening, getting sunlight early in the day and basic health habits like exercising, eating well and avoiding smoking.

That’s all well and good, but what about when you’re actually in bed with the lights off and simply can’t fall asleep because your body is buzzing or your mind is racing?

That’s where some simple tricks to help yourself drift off to sleep can help. Some tricks are physical and some are mental, so what sounds helpful may depend on what’s preventing you from falling asleep. As with most things, different things work for different people, so it’s worth experimenting with a few, but here are some hacks people on Reddit swear by to fall asleep quickly.

Listen to boring bedtime stories

“On Spotify there is a podcast called ‘Nothing much happens: bedtime stories to help you sleep.’ Each episode is around half an hour but the storyteller tells the story twice and the second time she tells it with a slower pace. I am really curious how she tells the story slower but I was never able to make it to the second half. Sometimes I try to focus and promise myself that I will remember the story when I wake up the next morning. However, I can’t recall anything. Nothing much happens, so it’s extremely boring and my brains shuts down pretty quickly.”

“There’s also one called ‘I Can’t Sleep’ where the host reads random articles from the internet, mostly Wikipedia pages. His voice is super soothing and I rarely make it past the first 15 minutes or so of an episode.”

“‘Sleep with Me’ podcast by Scooter. Same concept as what everyone else said. But wow! There’s a lot of sleep podcasts!!”

Make up your own bedtime story

“I used to have bad insomnia when I was younger, and the only thing that seemed to work for me was imagining a story. I would set the setting, the premise, the characters, and start coming up with it. Basically, I was kick starting the dreaming process. I’d be asleep within a few minutes.”

“This has been my trick for years…I’m not even that creative, I’ve probably restarted the same 3 or 4 narratives hundreds of times, but never get anywhere close to the end.”

“I scrolled and scrolled because I knew I’d find something like this. I create crazy ass stuff in my head. Sea levels rise 100 feet and I built a bunker and have to save people I know. Lead singer of a killer band. Qb of a team. I invented a machine that does all your daily grooming as you sleep. Just weird shit. Usually out in a few minutes.”

Create an alphabet-based list

“Trying to find 5 names with each letter. I usually fall asleep by K or L.”

“I do this with animals: aardvark, antelope, etc. I usually fall asleep by B or C.”

“Similarly I pick a category. Countries, cities, street names, etc and run through the alphabet.”

“This one is foolproof for me. Never gotten the whole way through the alphabet.”

Imagine you’re on a boat or in a hammock

“The boat technique. A military buddy told me about it when he was stationed in Mali. Imagine yourself in a small boat, on a stream running through a forest with the canopy above you and the sun shining through, or drifting on a lake under a starry sky. Let yourself drift.”

“I figured out the boat one myself as a child, except it was a raft on very gentle waves. And the Scooby Gang were hanging out with me.”

“I sometimes picture myself in a hammock in a rainforest, with various animals snuggling around and on top of me. I love animals, so this is meant to relax me and make me feel safe. I use a weighted blanket, so I try to picture different animals draped over my legs to justify the weight of the blanket.”

“Picture yourself on a hammock hanging between two palms on a beach at night, focus on the waves and electricity enveloping your body from each palm.”

Breathe—but very, very slowly

“Breathing. Slow deliberate breathing. Count the same for in and out. And for every breath out, try and relax your muscles. I just keep doing that. Works most of the time.”

“Came to say this. Breathing exercises have changed my life <3 started doing them after losing my dad and depression wouldn’t let me sleep. I read about it, was like uh whatever bullshit, but I tried it, and then… I woke up the next morning?! Been doing them for 7 years now. Even my man is like how the F do you pass out in 10min?! Breathe in……. Breathe out…. Think about nothing but the breaths, feel the oxygen in your blood increasing, think about your veins running alllll up and down your body. How your muscles relax into the bed… the pillow is so soft… breathe in… breathe out.”

“My hack is similar as in I take the deepest breath I possibly can, then hold it for as long as I can, then release it as slow as I can. I never needed more than 3 reps of this to fall asleep. The heart rate slows down and the brain quiets down pretty fast with this.”

“I breathe super slow to 10 and then force my left arm to relax and not move from now on like I shut it down. Then I do the same with my right arm, then left leg and right left. Then I do the torso and then finally try to shut off my head. I heard Marines use a similar technique to fall asleep.”

More specifically, the 4-7-8 breathing technique

“When I really need to sleep, I use the ‘4-7-8’ breathing technique. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Works like a charm most of the time”

“I swear by the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. Works like a charm! 😴”

“I use 4:7:8 breathing : inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. Count at the speed you are comfortable, my understanding is that it’s the ratio that’s important, rather than the amount of time. This breathing pattern effects the oxygen levels in your brain in a way that brings you into parasympathetic activation (sometimes called ‘rest and digest mode.’)”

Tensing and relaxing your muscles (aka “progressive relaxation”)

“Progressive relaxation. Tense your toes, breathe in for a 5 count, hold for 5, and then relax as you exhale. Then your calves, then your thighs, your butt, your core, etc.”

“Focus on a muscle group. Be it feet, calves, thighs, and just work your way up. Flex your muscles as hard as possible, get that adrenaline going. And after a bit, relax. Slowly work your way up to your head and face. You can feel the waves of calm wash over each section once they relax.”

“My dad taught me something similar. While reclined, imagine creating a wave with your body by gently imagining you are putting downward pressure on your sleeping place starting with your head, then shoulders, then back, then legs and then your feet. I sleep on my side so I go head, shoulders, hips, knees then feet.”

Hopefully trying some of these tricks will help you find what works to help you fall asleep more easily and quickly. Sweet dreams, everyone!

14-yr-old Alabama boy blew AGT judges and audience away with soulful ‘You Don’t Own Me’

Ever since American Idol gave us the one-and-only Kelly Clarkson in its first season, modern talent competitions have become a staple of television viewing. We’ve seen so many incredible performers come through shows like “American Idol,” “The Voice,” and the “Got Talent” series, but there are still some singers who manage to surprise and delight audiences with their powerful, unique voices.

For instance, 14-year-old Reid Thomas Wilson.

Reid performed Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit “You Don’t Own Me” on “America’s Got Talent,” and it’s safe to say no one expected the voice that came out of a boy from Alabama who’s still in braces.

Gore was only 17 when she released “You Don’t Own Me” and the song has been covered by artists such as Dusty Springfield, Joan Jett and Ann Wilson over the decades, but it’s never sounded quite like this. It’s no wonder Howie Mandel smashed that Golden Buzzer button, rocketing Reid to the live show round of the competition.

@agt

@its_reidthomas’ rendition of “You Don’t Own Me” is so good, he received @howiemandel’s second Golden Buzzer!✨ watch #AGT tuesdays on @NBC and streaming on @Peacock.

“Well, Reid, we weren’t expecting that,” said judge Simon Cowell. “You know, I shut my eyes for a moment when you were singing, just to listen to your voice, and then I opened them again and there’s this sweet young kid.”

Howie Mandel concurred. “I was bowled over because I was surprised…first of all, you’re just a 14-year-old kid from Alabama, so I would imagine—I put myself in your position—you were very nervous. And you did come off incredibly nervous, that was a surprise.”

As the judges and Reid’s mother pointed out, Reid was very nervous at the beginning of the audition, but he ultimately knocked it out of the park.

When Cowell asked what singer he draws inspiration from, Reid said singing legend Aretha Franklin. “Your parents must have great taste in music,” said Cowell, to which Reid simply and hilariously responded, “No.”

Speaking of Aretha Franklin, Reid has had some experience with virality on social media for some of his at-home singing videos, including one where he sings Franklin’s “Aint’ No Way.” Broadway great Lea Solanga commented on the video, “What on earth????? This kid is incredible!!!!!!!!” Another video in which Reid sang part of “The Impossible Dream” prompted a wave of big-name comments as well, such as Kristin Chenoweth telling him he should audition for her Broadway Boot Camp and Boy George commenting, “Write songs. Your voice deserves new songs.”

People on AGT’s TikTok of Reid’s audition had nothing but praise for the young singer.

“The longer he sang ,the better he got!”

“His voice is very transatlantic vintage and it’s AMAZING”

“Amazing voice control. This kid is going places!”

“You could see Simon listening closely and I love it when he does that. He’s picturing success I think.”

“His clarity and control at 14 years old HOLY HECK!! he deserves that golden buzzer 😭”

Reid apparently comes from a talented family. His brother, Ryley Tate Wilson, was a competitor on “The Voice” in 2023 at age 16, making it to the semi-finals before being eliminated.

Reid is definitely one to watch, with this much talent at such a young age. Watch the full AGT audition and judges’ comments here:

Neo-Nazis slowly realize this small town totally punked them

In preparation for an upcoming neo-Nazi march in the small Bavarian town of Wunsiedel, local residents decided to fight back in a hilariously perfect way: by sponsoring each of the 250 fascist participants.

According to Heeb Magazine, “For every metre they walked, €10 went to a programme called EXIT Deutschland, which helps people escape extremist groups.”

The anti-semitic walkers didn’t figure out the town’s scheme until they had already started their march, and by that time, it was too late to turn back. The end result? The neo-Nazis raised more than $12,000 to fund programs to put an end to neo-Nazis.
