Pop Smoke Will Make His Acting Debut In Eddie Huang’s Basketball Film ‘Boogie’

Late Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke may very well have been on the verge of superstardom when he passed away last year. Not only did he have one of the biggest breakout singles in “Welcome To The Party,” it appears he was ready to prove himself a triple threat in the trailer for Boogie, the upcoming directorial debut of Fresh Off The Boat creator Eddie Huang. A coming-of-age drama about a Chinese high school basketball player, Boogie will showcase Pop Smoke’s acting and hoop skills as he portrays the lead character Alfred “Boogie” Chin’s bully and rival player. The trailer, released today, promises Pop Smoke’s role is much more than just a cameo.

Meanwhile, the film seems to be the debut for its star Taylor Takahashi as well as being Huang’s first feature. Boogie shares themes in common with much of Huang’s work, such as his affinity for hip-hop and Black culture as a child of Taiwanese immigrants, forming one’s own cultural identity, and being enamored with basketball, defying stereotypes of Asian-Americans. The story may be familiar to NBA fans who remember Jeremy Lin’s breakout season with the Knicks and Lin sharing similar stories in its wake.

The film will also feature another rapper with hoop skills: Dave East, who played amateur basketball with a number of future NBA players including Kevin Durant, and played at the collegiate level before dropping out and pursuing rap full-time. The trailer for Boogie also features Pop Smoke’s “Many Men” from his posthumous debut album, which samples 50 Cent‘s song of the same title from his 2003 debut. The music for the film is produced by A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and composer Adrian Younge, who has worked extensively in hip-hop.

Boogie is scheduled for release on March 5 through Focus Features. Watch the trailer above.

Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt Cited Trump’s Obsessive TV Watching As Evidence That He’s Been A Super Hard Worker During His Time As President

In what will be the final day of President Trump’s term in office, the talking heads at Fox News are doing their best to rewrite history and position the commander-in-chief as the hardest working president in history. Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt welcomed Republican pundit Kristen Soltis Anderson on the show to discuss Joe Biden’s plan for his first 100 days in office, and talk quickly turned to Trump. Specifically, to what a go-getter the soon-to-be-former president is.

“They’ll criticize President Trump, but no one can argue he is a worker,” Earhardt gushed. “He doesn’t drink alcohol. He stays up late at night. He watches every show. He is working. He got to work immediately.” The irony in this statement is rich considering Trump has spent more days on the golf course than any president before him. (It might also be worth something to note that watching too much TV is not the shining example of productivity Earhardt seems to think it is.)

Earhardt and Anderson went on to criticize Biden’s plan to tackle immigration reform on his first day in office instead of focusing on the pandemic — again disregarding Trump’s own spectacular failure at managing the catastrophe and ignoring the work Biden and his team have already been doing to get the virus under control once he assumes the presidency. And while we could point to Trump’s uninspiring schedule for his final days in office — apparently he’s working from “early in the morning until late in the evening,” making “many calls” and taking “many meetings” — we thought we’d let Twitter drag the president for his pretty obnoxious display of senioritis on his final day on the job.

Here’s Everything New On Netflix In February 2021, Including More Of ‘They Ready,’ Along With ‘Red Dot’ And ‘Crime Scene’

Things will eventually get better for humanity in 2021, but the time is still right to stay home as much as possible while pulling off wild social-distancing maneuvers and getting creative with masks. Fortunately, Netflix knew that we’d need more distractions to stay strong while those vaccines roll out. As a result, February’s bringing us more fresh content than people will know what to do with, and the streaming service is truly giving everyone something to bingewatch (and a lot of comedy in the process) while we cross our fingers for the final leg of the pandemic.

Plenty of original offerings are on the way, including more stand-up laughs from Tiffany Haddish and her closest funny friends. Oh, and Joe Berlinger’s hit “pause” on his Ted Bundy obsession to embroil everyone in a different true-crime saga; a horror movie will largely take place in a tent (which will make you want to never go into the wilderness again); and romcom fans of all ages can enjoy the conclusion of one of the most predictable (yet inexplicably enjoyable) franchises of all time. How romantic! Really, though, these offerings look like a blast.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix in February.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready: Season 2 (Netflix series streaming 2/2)

Netflix’s stellar run of stand-up comedy specials took a bit of a breather in late 2020, but there’s some excellent news on the horizon. In only a few short weeks, Girl’s Trip star Tiffany Haddish will return to introduce the world to more of her favorite comedians. This fresh collection of half-hour specials includes a diverse crop of comedians who are near and dear to Haddish. These players include Chaunté Wayans (Wild n’ Out), April Macie (Last Comic Standing), Tracey Ashley (The Last O.G.), Aida Rodriguez (Comedy Central’s This Week at the Comedy Cellar), Flame Monroe (Def Comedy Jam), and Marlo Williams (BET’s Comicview). This season won’t drop a moment too soon because we could really use the laughs.

Red Dot (Netflix film streaming 2/11)

This might be a cautionary tale for people who decide it’s a great idea to rekindle their marriages in the unforgiving wilderness — who knows? For sure, though, this is a claustrophobic tale about what happens when a sadistic killer points a red laser dot into Nadja and David’s tent, and that act sends them fighting for their lives. Naturally, a lot of marriage drama will happen along the way, as they attempt to save themselves in the snowy terrain. I guess couple’s counseling was a no-go, but that’s not nearly as entertaining as escaping into other people’s hell when they find themselves feeling like they’re on the other end of a video-game gun. Also, there’s a dog in this trailer, and nothing had better happen to him, or I’m gonna call for John Wick vengeance.

Netflix

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (Netflix documentary series streaming 2/10)

The Ted Bundy-obsessed Joe Berlinger — he directed Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile starring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy and created Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes — brings us a new docuseries that tackles a new mythology. Crime Scene is actually the launch of a documentary franchise that will dive into mysteries surrounding locations where infamous crimes took place. In this first season, the Cecil Hotel in Downtown LA becomes ground central for many untimely deaths and the housing of serial killers. In particular, this series digs into the 2013 disappearance of a college student, Elisa Lam, at the notorious hotel. Internet sleuths helped to mobilize and stir up a media frenzy, and what’s even more chilling is that this is only one of the hotel’s countless sinister happenings over the years.

To All The Boys: Always And Forever (Netflix film streaming 2/12)

Noah Centineo’s reign as the Internet’s Boyfriend may be coming to an end with the conclusion of Netflix’s smash-hit, romcom trilogy. Lana Condor’s still keeping Lara Jean’s head on as tightly as possible while things get dreamier with her boyfriend, although everything could change with their oncoming plans for college. Will they both go to Stanford and keep their love alive, or will Lara Jean depart school in New York City? Long distance love isn’t so lovely, and god only knows what else can be revealed in this film that they haven’t shown in this trailer (this franchise is a master at the art of revealing the whole movie in a few minutes), but fans will be excited to find out whether Peter and Lara Jean can actually make it beyond their idyllic high school setting.

Julia Michaels Brings Her Buoyant ‘Lie Like This’ Single To A Sultry ‘Seth Meyers’ Performance

Though she has yet to put out a full-length studio album, Julia Michaels has already worked with some of today’s biggest pop stars like Selena Gomez and Niall Horan and earned an impressive three Grammy nominations. After a few fruitful years, Michaels is finally gearing up for her debut studio album. Though she has yet to reveal the album’s title, Michaels is already drumming up anticipation for the release with a show-stopping performance on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

The singer makes use of her small stage, projecting moving visuals on the screen behind her to offer a vibrant images alongside her cheerful tune. Micheals shimmies and twirls around her microphone stand while belting out lyrics about finally feeling secure in a relationship.

Michaels previously released a colorful video alongside the single, which she said took her out of her comfort zone. “A lot of my fans know me as the awkward uncoordinated girl that has too many feelings,” she had said at the time. “Well, I’m still that. But I got to shoot a music video where it was just me, in clothes that we’re so fun and way too tight and I loved every second of it! I’m still a long way from being a confident creature but I felt much closer to it when we shot this day.”

All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got another taste of Julien Baker’s forthcoming LP, a beautiful Perfume Genius remix, and a slow-burning new track from Foo Fighters. Check out the rest of the best new indie music below.

Shame – Drunk Tank Pink

After breaking out in 2018 with their debut LP Songs Of Shame, British post-punkers Shame are back with a hard-hitting sophomore release, diving head-on into some of the most pressing topics of today. “While they haven’t deviated all that much from the first album, Shame’s sense of momentum and menace remains alluring,” wrote Steven Hyden in a recent issue of the Indie Mixtape newsletter.

Sleaford Mods – Spare Ribs

On their latest album, British duo Sleaford Mods get aggressive and confrontational. Spare Ribs is an album “for people who enjoy the sounds of decay while watching the world around them decay,” wrote Steven Hyden in a recent issue of the Indie Mixtape newsletter.

Buck Meek – Two Saviors

Even while Big Thief isn’t active, we can still look to the band’s members for a wealth of new music. Adrienne Lenker blessed us with two solo albums in 2020, and now Buck Meek is opening up 2021 with an offering of his own. Meek worked on Two Saviors with Lenker, so it definitely feels like part of the ever-growing BTEU (Big Thief Extended Universe).

Danielle Durack – No Place

We were recently asked what artist we thought should join Boygenius with Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. After listening to No Place, we think that Danielle Durack could be a perfect fit. The album “takes inspiration from a versatile range of influences and sonic pallets, embodying everything from classic songwriters like Joni Mitchell and The Beatles to modern indie icons like Hop Along,” I wrote in a recent Indie Mixtape 20 Q&A with Durack.

Foo Fighters – “Waiting On A War”

Released as a way of celebrating Dave Grohl’s 52nd birthday, “Waiting On A War” is the most anthemic cut we’ve heard so far from the Foos forthcoming tenth studio album Medicine At Midnight. It’s “an acoustic rocker that ramps up in tempo and intensity during its last minute to explode into a sprawling catharsis,” writes Derrick Rossignol for Uproxx.

Julien Baker – “Hardline”

With her third solo album dropping in just over a month, Julien Baker has shared another taste from the effort to fully illustrate her new full-band aesthetic. “Hardline” “shows Baker taking leaps with her arrangements, working dramatic organ hits and other new-to-her sounds into the hugely climactic, sometimes post-rock-like track,” writes Derrick Rossignol for Uproxx.

Perfume Genius – “Your Body Changes Everything” (Boy Harsher Remix)

Perfume Genius is revisiting one of 2020’s finest albums with the new Immediately Remixes collection, featuring reimagined tracks from Set My Heart On Fire Immediately by the likes of Jaakko Eino Kaleivi, A.G. Cook, Jim-E Stack, Planningtorock, Jenny Hval, and more. The first glimpse at the new versions comes from Boy Harsher’s take on “Your Body Changes Everything,” a darker take on the original song which Boy Harsher says “[attempts] to honor the initial feelings of lust and desire.”

Claud – “Cuff Your Jeans”

Claud’s debut album — and the first release on Phoebe Bridgers’ new label Saddest Factory — arrives in just a few weeks. No two singles from Super Monster have sounded the same, and “Cuff Your Jeans” continues the pattern. “All elements of this song are a much needed form of rebellion against my redundant lifestyle, and my pitched down vocals in the verses — which appear in a few more places throughout Super Monster — are a way to further a more courageous and outspoken persona,” Claud revealed in a statement.

Citizen – “I Want To Kill You”

For their fourth LP, Life In Your Glass World Citizen retreated to vocalist Mat Kerekes’ garage, where he just put the finishing touches on a home studio. The band tried to get out of their comfort zone during the writing process by starting each song with a drum beat, rather than a guitar part. The resulting focus on pulsing rhythm sections is showcased perfectly in “I Want To Kill You,” which also signals a shift in Citizen’s trajectory from a post-punk band to something fresh.

Ian Sweet – “Drink The Lake”

After a string of standalone singles, Ian Sweet has announced her third album Show Me How You Disappear. Along with the announcement came “Drink The Lake,” a track that finds Sweet “realizing a new form of emotional freedom,” writes Carolyn Droke for Uproxx.

Wild Pink – “Oversharers Anonymous”

Wild Pink’s forthcoming album A Billion Little Lights is one of our early favorites of 2021, and the latest single “Oversharers Anonymous” is a pretty good indicator of exactly why. It’s a breezy, reflective track that was inspired by the work of Ken Burns and Peter Cozzens.

Sydney Sprague – “Object Permanence”

Ahead of her new album Maybe I Will See You At The End Of The World, Sydney Sprague has shared “Object Permanence,” an upbeat power pop song about settling into the separation that comes with entering a long-distance relationship and trying to find some way to get comfortable.

American Poetry Club – “Thank You x3”

After releasing three(!!) full-length albums in 2017, the members of American Poetry Club haven’t played together since May of 2019. During the worldwide lockdown, the group reconvened digitally to begin work on a new album, all while never being in the same room. “Thank You x3” is the first preview of the resulting Do You Believe In Your Heart?!?, a lo-fi about friendship and community that features group vocals reminiscent of long-lost Michigan emo band Brave Bird.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘Tiger King’ Joe Exotic’s Legal Team Is Pulling Out All The Stops While Hoping For A Last-Minute Trump Pardon

In a perhaps over-confident move, Tiger King star Joe Exotic‘s legal team already has a limo waiting in the event that President Donald Trump pardons the controversial zoo-owner who’s currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted over a murder-for-hire plot. While there’s no guarantee that Exotic’s name will be on the list of over 100 people that Trump is planning to pardon before leaving office, his legal team is convinced that their client will be released, and they’re ready to pull out all of the stops to celebrate. In addition to the limo, Exotic’s team is ready to make sure the convicted animal abuser is looking sharp as he hits the town for… a McRib? Via Metro:

‘‘I’ve got make-up, wardrobe, the whole unit that will come up. The first thing Joe wants to do, he wants his hair done. He hasn’t had his hair done in two-and-a-half years. That’s the first order of business. Then we’ll probably go and get some pizzas, steak, maybe a McRib.’

As one last incentive for Trump, Exotic’s team says pardoning the Tiger King star will “take most of the limelight away” from Joe Biden’s inauguration. While that definitely won’t happen, it is the kind of thing that Trump would believe could happen, so well played. That being said, the confidence from Exotic’s legal team is surprising considering the star recently sued the Department of Justice back in December over claims that his pardon request was denied without being brought to Trump’s attention. So far, his legal team has offered little in the way of details on how that situation has improved to the point where they now have a limo waiting, so Exotic can get crunked on McRibs.

Carey Mulligan Opens Up About The ‘Brilliant’ And ‘Difficult’ Ending To ‘Promising Young Woman’

(Spoilers for Promising Young Woman will be found below.)

Promising Young Woman premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and ever since, there’s been a lot of talk about the ending. Well, now that the comedy-thriller, starring Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan and written and directed by Emerald Fennell, is available on video on demand, everyone can see all what the fuss was about.

Here’s the part where I am adding a second SPOILER ALERT, because Promising Young Woman is good and you should watch it: Cassie (Mulligan) is killed at a bachelor party by Al (GLOW‘s Chris Lowell), the same guy who raped her best friend in college. He didn’t face legal consequence then, and nearly gets away with murder by smothering Cassie with a pillow (with help from Schmidt from New Girl), but he’s arrested on his wedding day thanks to Cassie’s forward thinking. It’s an unpleasant ending, even if Cassie gets a small bit of revenge, but it’s the one that Fennell thought was necessary.

“I think like everyone, when I was first writing it, I expected and wanted the ending that we all expected and wanted,” the former-Killing Eve writer told Entertainment Tonight. “You’re expecting for her at any moment to get out a machete, get out a gun and do this stuff that we’re used to seeing in movies like this. But once I was there, it wasn’t possible. It wasn’t honest. Women do not resort to violence very often, if ever — that’s one of the main tropes of this genre that is subverted — so it was important to me that the moment a woman is in a room and there’s a weapon and there’s a man there, there’s really only one way.” Mulligan agreed with Fennell’s decision, adding, “I found the ending very difficult and very satisfying. It was such a brilliant ending to the film… I absolutely felt in line with Emerald that you have to tell the truth about this kind of stuff.”

Promising Young Woman would be a more emotionally satisfying movie if Cassie kills Al and lives her best life. But with that ending, it’s a tragically honest movie.

NBA Power Rankings Week 4: The Jazz Are Riding High

Like many teams in this pandemic-challenged NBA season, the Utah Jazz began the 2020-21 campaign on a relatively uninspiring note. The Jazz were never in an unstable position, even after posting a 4-4 record, but after massive contractual investments in both Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, relative stability isn’t quite enough for Utah. With that said, the last five games have flashed some of the considerable upside Quin Snyder’s team possesses.

The Jazz have won five in a row, outscoring opponents by a blistering 16.6 points per 100 possession during the streak. Most winning streaks are accompanied by off-the-charts numbers, but Utah is scoring at a rate of more than 1.16 points per possession in the last five. Furthermore, the Jazz began their run with an impressive road win over the Milwaukee Bucks and knocked off the Denver Nuggets on the road on Sunday.

As the dust settles from that explosion, Utah holds a +5.1 net rating, good for a top-five mark in the NBA, and the Jazz boast top-10 marks in both offensive and defensive rating. Offensively, the Jazz are making gains on the glass, pulling down almost 30 percent of their own misses, and they have been fantastic with Mike Conley and/or Jordan Clarkson on the court to provide support to the team’s stars.

On the other end, Utah’s defense has been unquestionably elite, especially in non-garbage time situations. Per Cleaning The Glass, the Jazz are allowing 1.06 points per possession when removing garbage time, and that overall mark is bolstered by league-leading marks in effective field goal percentage allowed (49.8 percent) and free throw rate allowed (14.0 percent). Gobert’s presence almost singlehandedly ensures that the Jazz are potent defensively, with Utah allowing 100.8 points per 100 possessions, but it is also a team-wide effort and Snyder has the club firing on all cylinders.

Scarily, Utah is 9-4 overall, even after a slow start from Mitchell. Granted, he is breaking out with 25.3 points per game and 42.6 percent from three-point range in the last eight games, but Utah has been quite good even without outlier production from their leaders. It must be noted that the Jazz have avoided injury or protocol-related absences for the most part, though Joe Ingles is currently sidelined. Utah does have a leg up over some of their direct competition with the cohesion that results from bringing the band back for another run, but the Jazz are flatly playing at an elite level in the recent past.

Where do the Jazz stack up against the rest of the NBA in mid-January? Let’s take a glance at this week’s DIME power rankings.
1. Los Angeles Lakers (11-4, Last week — 1st)

Getty Image

The Lakers blew a 19-point advantage at home against the Warriors. For most teams, that might be enough to drop from the top spot but, if we’re being honest, Los Angeles is still the top team since they have the best record and the best net rating (+10.0) in the NBA. If second half implosions become a regular occurrence, perhaps we’ll re-evaluate, but that doesn’t seem likely.

2. L.A. Clippers (10-4, Last week — 4th)

The Clippers have won four in a row. The Clippers have won their last two games by 71 total points. L.A. is scorching on offense and, at least when the team’s best players on the floor, the defense won’t be a concern. They are in good shape.

3. Utah Jazz (9-4, Last week — 7th)

Utah isn’t as good as the Clippers and Lakers but, with how they’ve been playing, this feels just right.

4. Brooklyn Nets (9-6, Last week — 11th)

The James Harden era is underway and it began on a positive note. Brooklyn is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, even if it began before Harden arrived, and the Nets knocked off the Bucks on national TV on Monday evening. Kyrie Irving isn’t back yet, but everyone is talking about the Nets, and with good reason.

5. Milwaukee Bucks (9-5, Last week — 2nd)

Mike Budenholzer’s team has better peripherals than the Nets, including the No. 1 mark in offensive rating (117.7) and the No. 2 net rating, trailing only the Lakers. The Bucks did just lose a nail-biter to the Nets, though, so Brooklyn wins something of a tiebreaker this week. Fear not, Milwaukee fans, your team is good.

6. Philadelphia 76ers (9-5, Last week — 5th)

Getty Image

Given how short-handed the 76ers have been for a relatively long period, being 9-5 is a success. They also have a (very) interesting matchup on the horizon against a conference opponent on Wednesday and that opponent is the Boston Celtics.

7. Boston Celtics (8-4, Last week — 3rd)

Speaking of the Celtics, Boston is punished in the rankings for a rather stunning 30-point loss to the Knicks over the weekend. It feels like that was an outlier, both because of this season and the fact that it was a midday tip-off, but whew, that was ugly.

8. Memphis Grizzlies (7-6, Last week — 24th)

As noted above, the Jazz have won five in a row and that is the longest active winning streak in the NBA. Memphis is matching Utah, though, and the Grizzlies should be credited for weathering an injury storm early in the season. They likely aren’t a top-eight team in practical terms, but it’s been an encouraging run for Memphis.

9. Phoenix Suns (7-5, Last week — 8th)

The Suns had an entire homestand wiped out by postponements before returning to action in Memphis on MLK Day. That was a close loss to the Grizzlies but, in truth, there isn’t much to take away on the court from the last week-plus for Chris Paul, Devin Booker and company.

10. Portland Trail Blazers (8-6, Last week — 6th)

Wins and losses always matter, but the big news for Portland this week is the injury to CJ McCollum. McCollum was playing the best basketball of his career before suffering a hairline fracture in his foot against the Hawks on Saturday night and, in the first game without, Portland was walloped by San Antonio at home. It will be interesting to see how the Blazers hold up without both McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic, with all kinds of pressure on Damian Lillard to carry the ship.

11. Golden State Warriors (7-6, Last week — 13th)

Getty Image

Monday night’s win over the Lakers was a lot of fun for the Warriors. It is still tough to decipher just how good Golden State is, especially when evaluating their advanced numbers, but they are capable of explosions behind Stephen Curry. That much is clear.

12. Indiana Pacers (8-5, Last week — 12th)

Indiana picked up a pair of very good road wins over Golden State and Portland this week. Then, they got throttled by a 33-point margin against the Clippers. That feels like a break-even week, but with the absences mounting with Caris LeVert and the news of Myles Turner having a small fracture in his hand, there is some concern in Indiana.

13. San Antonio Spurs (8-6, Last week — 20th)

The Spurs are better than expected. Sometimes, it’s just good to say things simply. San Antonio is outscoring its opponents for the season, and they’ve largely done with LaMarcus Aldridge struggling. They have depth. They are well-coached. They have pretty good talent. It’s a solid recipe, even if one without immense overall upside.

14. Denver Nuggets (6-7, Last week — 9th)

There isn’t anything jarring about losing to the Nets and Jazz this week, but Denver just has to start winning games at some point. It’s early, but the Nuggets are under .500 and still rocking the 25th-best defense in the NBA. On the flip side, Denver does have a +2.9 net rating and Nikola Jokic has been lights-out.

15. Toronto Raptors (5-8, Last week — 23rd)

Toronto finally woke up this week, winning all three games. It wasn’t a full-blown gauntlet from a schedule standpoint, but the Raptors scored 1.14 points per possession and looked the part of a good team again. They’ll put that to the test against Miami on Wednesday.

16. Atlanta Hawks (6-7, Last week — 17th)

Getty Image

Atlanta is just trying to hang around at this point. Danilo Gallinari, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Kris Dunn are out, with Cam Reddish missing the last two games as well. There wasn’t a lot to be impressed by with the Hawks this week, but they got a win they needed on Monday over the shorthanded Wolves.

17. Dallas Mavericks (6-7, Last week — 10th)

Kristaps Porzingis is back and the Mavericks are… worse? Okay, that probably isn’t true, but Dallas is on a three-game losing streak. Perhaps the craziest part of their season is the fact that the Mavericks are in the bottom-10 offensively. This isn’t the exact same group that led the league in offense last season, but most of the pieces are the same and the results have been puzzling.

18. Miami Heat (5-7, Last week — 16th)

The Heat were close to falling even further this week, but they held on and beat the Pistons in a rematch on Monday. Still, Miami has been shaky to this point, and there is probably a discussion to be had about how good they really are right now. There is some benefit of the doubt after last season, but it won’t last forever.

19. New Orleans Pelicans (5-7, Last week — 21st)

New Orleans badly needed to stop the bleeding after five straight losses, and they did it on the road in Sacramento on Monday. The team’s defense has predictably improved under Stan Van Gundy but, through 12 games, New Orleans is a below-average offensive squad. That isn’t going to work as a formula with their roster.

20. Chicago Bulls (6-8, Last week — 28th)

Chicago just beat Dallas by double-digits and followed it up by beating Houston. The Bulls are also up to 22nd in net rating after an unequivocally dreadful start. It wouldn’t be wise to completely ignore the start of the season but, since then, Chicago’s been fine.

21. Cleveland Cavaliers (6-7, Last week — 22nd)

If you told me that the Cavs would have the worst offensive rating in the NBA by a wide margin after 13 games, there is no way I’d predict a 6-7 record. None. Zero. But, hey, it happened.

22. New York Knicks (7-8, Last week — 27th)

New York annihilated Boston and that is the biggest reason for their five-spot jump this week. The Knicks continue to be very Knicks-y, but in an improved way under Tom Thibodeau. They aren’t a pushover, if nothing else.

23. Charlotte Hornets (6-8, Last week — 14th)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Hornets losing the last three games when considering opponent. Charlotte lost to Toronto (twice) on the road, and Dallas at home. On to next week.

24. Houston Rockets (4-8, Last week — 19th)

The Rockets are 2-6 in the last eight and, in the middle, their franchise changed considerably with the Harden trade. It is far too early to judge the new iteration, but the team’s season-long results aren’t very good.

25. Oklahoma City Thunder (6-6, Last week — 15th)

Reality returned for the Thunder this week in the form of a 1-2 record and some ugly peripheral numbers. Broadly speaking, OKC being 6-6 is still a big win in terms of results, but they are 28th in net rating. That might be more indicative.

26. Washington Wizards (3-8, Last week — 26th)

It’s impossible to rank Washington. The Wizards have the third-worst record in the league, but they are 17th (!) in net rating. From there, they haven’t played a game in more than a week. As such, they’re holding steady for now.

27. Orlando Magic (6-8, Last week — 18th)

Roster availability issues have caught up to the Magic. Orlando has the longest losing streak in the league at six and, over that time frame, the Magic have been outscored by a whopping 20.5 points per 100 possessions. Nikola Vucevic can’t do everything, and the supporting cast is banged-up and/or struggling.

28. Sacramento Kings (5-9, Last week — 25th)

I truly believe the Kings are better than this, but the defense has been flatly atrocious. Sacramento’s defensive rating is 120.5 through 14 games and, while that is unsustainable for basically any team, it certainly explains the 5-9 record and the 0-3 week.

29. Detroit Pistons (3-10, Last week — 29th)

It wasn’t the worst week for the Pistons. Detroit went on the road and beat Miami, then followed it up by keeping it close against the Heat again on Monday. Alas, this is still the first ten-loss team in the league and they are a bottom-tier team on both ends.

30. Minnesota Timberwolves (3-9, Last week — 30th)

Due to a postponement, the Wolved played only two games this week. Minnesota lost both by double-digits and the unfortunate absence of Karl-Anthony Towns means the roster is even shakier than it was a week ago. The Wolves have the worst peripherals in the league and, as of Tuesday, they are also tied for the league low with three wins.

Jazmine Sullivan And Eric Church Will Deliver The National Anthem At Super Bowl LV

It’s less than a month into the new year and 2021 is already shaping up to be a big year for R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan. The singer graced late-night television performances and NPR’s acclaimed Tiny Desk series in celebration of her recently released LP Heaux Tales. Now, Sullivan has been tapped to deliver the National Anthem alongside country singer Eric Church at the Super Bowl LV, one of the most-watched events of the year.

As confirmed by Church on his social media, he and Sullivan will deliver the song just ahead of kickoff. They will also be joined by Grammy Award-winning musician HER, who will give her rendition of “America The Beautiful.”

The performance will commence the Super Bowl LV festivities and build anticipation for The Weeknd’s halftime show performance, which has gotten attention in light of his Grammys snub. After The Weeknd called the Grammys “corrupt,” a report surfaced that the Recording Academy had pulled his Grammy consideration after choosing to perform at the Super Bowl rather than their award ceremony. Apparently, The Weeknd had been planning a collaborative performance on the Grammys stage before being shut out of nominations. “Collaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited?” he wrote on Twitter. “In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!”

The Super Bowl LV takes place 2/7 at 6:30 p.m. EST in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie Is Being Sued For Over $250K By His Landlords

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie is being sued for over $260,000 in damages by the owners of a mansion he leased in 2017, according to NorthJersey.com. The owners, a New Jersey couple, filed suit through their insurance company after they say A Boogie entered a 12-month lease agreement but abandoned the property, leaving it in much worse shape than he got it.

The new blemishes to the property are numerous, from “damage to the landscape” to “bathroom toilets clogged and overrun by sewerage material which penetrated through the floors and damaging ceilings below.” Also included in the list of damages: “carpets cut out and mismatched pieces replaced,” “entry doors to be left open with evidence of extensive water damage,” and even a pair of vehicles abandoned on the property.

The lawsuit calls the damage “a direct and proximate result of the negligent, reckless and/or carelessness of the defendants the Property sustained extensive damage to the high end interior finishes and was left in a condition that left it unable to be leased until extensive repairs were conducted.” The owners, Dr. Lawrence Guarino and his wife, Carol Guarino, are seeking $263,592 in compensation. Maybe there’s an ulterior motive for the rapper joining OnlyFans — paying back his landlords.

A Boogie’s year is off to a rough start, but his 2020 ended on a sour note as well; in December, he was arrested for guns and drugs after a shooting on his birthday.
