Daniel Day-Lewis Has Nothing On Maria Bakalova’s Method Acting Approach To ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’

Famous method actor Daniel Day-Lewis visited restaurants in a wheelchair while shooting My Left Foot; studied fashion for Phantom Thread; and texted his Lincoln co-stars as Abraham Lincoln. Hold my skunked beer, says Maria Bakalova.

The Borat Subsequent Moviefilm actress told Collider that to get in character to play Borat’s daughter Tutar, she made herself stinky. Very, very stinky.

Bakalova did three screen tests for the role, two with Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohen, and another to see how she would handle a scene by herself among non-actors. “I remember that some of [the production team] advised me, ‘Don’t be clean, don’t prepare yourself to look pretty or to be glam… Try to not take [a] shower.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, okay, I mean I’m ready for it, but I’m in the middle of another production, so it’s gonna be devastating for the rest of the crew in the movie that I was shooting.’ So I made something super smelly, stinky with banana peels, old eggs, vinegar, old olive oil, onions. And I mixed it and it was probably the worst smell that you can ever imagine,” she said.

“And I put it all over me, and I started hugging and touching people for [goodbyes], and they were like, ‘Okay, this is not an actor, for sure.’ So that was probably the last audition that I went [on], and it was maybe two weeks before I came to America and we started shooting this crazy, beautiful roller-coaster.”

Daniel Day-Lewis was 43 years old when he was nominated for his first Academy Award. Bakalova is only 24. I’m just saying…

Wale Seeks ‘Good Vibes’ In His Topical New Single

When it comes to hip-hop addressing the sad spectacle of rioters overtaking the Capitol building a few weeks ago, perhaps no one is better suited than DC local Wale. His new song “Good Vibes (Za)” finds him ruminating about the double standard in the governmental response between the Capitol rioters and the peaceful protests held for victims of police shootings. He also pays homage to Nipsey Hussle and Pop Smoke and takes conservative pundits to tasks for spreading their divisive takes, reviving his long-standing feud with Tomi Lahren with yet another name-manging call out.

Wale, who often addresses controversial topics in his music, tackled the pandemic on 2020’s The Imperfect Storm just after releasing the cinematic video to his Wow… That’s Crazy single “Sue Me.” Toward the end of the year, he returned to his emotional subject matter with Gunna on “I’m Flawed,” and remained in a romantic mood this year on his Earthgang collaboration “Options.” Still, with Wale, it’s only a matter of time until he speaks up on current events and social issues, with explains how he’s maintained his relevance for so long, even if he feels he can’t collaborate with superstar pop singers like Lady Gaga anymore.

What’s On Tonight: ‘Everwood’ (With Chris Pratt And Emily VanCamp In Throwback Mode) Comes To HBO Max

Everwood: All Seasons (Warner Bros. series on HBO Max) — One of Greg Berlanti’s most beloved series returns with two MCU stars in tow. Revisit Chris Pratt’s early aughts hair and marvel at how Emily VanCamp manages to look cool, and almost like she still appears today, beside the guy who who would go on to play Star-Lord. To be slightly more serious, this is an opportunity to catch up on all four seasons of a a dramedy that’s set in a fictional, idyllic Colorado town, where a city boy attempts to fit into the small-community vibe and relationships of all types swirl after a Manhattan physician decides to transplant to Everwood. There’s plenty of bright (and Pratt’s character is actually named Bright) and tragic and heartwarming moments to be found in this show.

Prodigal Son (FOX, 9:00pm) — Michael Sheen and and Tom Payne are still being super weird in this super-weird procedural. This week, a murder of a priest apparently goes down in a house of worship. This jarring event leads Bright back into in his own trauma while Martin consults a fellow inmate, who happens to also be a holy man, while attempting to assist on the case.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (NBC, 8:00pm) — Zoey’s having increasingly upsetting dreams that are affecting both her personal life and her musical interludes. Meanwhile, Jenna’s helping Maggie in her own way.

Two Sentence Horror Stories (CW, 8:00pm) — The only Asian American financial advisor at an investment firm sits on the brink of a major award when a stalker strikes.

Trickster (CW, 9:00pm) — Wade claims to be Jared’s real father, which leads into a home invasion and even more increasingly weird consequences.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — Jason Segel, Black Puma

Jimmy Kimmel Live! — Casey Affleck, Congressman Adam Schiff, and Jack Harlow

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon — Dakota Johnson, Yara Shahidi, Tate McRae

Late Night With Seth Meyers — Rachel Maddow, Guy Fieri, Billie Piper, Sarah Thawer

The Late Late Show With James Corden — Anthony Mackie, Machine Gun Kelly

In case you missed these recent picks:

Disenchantment: Season 3 (Netflix series) — Matt Groening of The Simpsons fame (and more) is still cranking away on this adult animated comedy fantasy series that digs into the many misadventures of boozy and feisty characters, including ogres, mermaids, walruses, and even human fools while exploring Dreamland. In this batch of episodes, the hard-drinking Princess Bean continues to explore her own destiny and identity as she comes into power. Don’t worry, Bean’s personal demon, Luci, and feisty elf companion, Elfo, are still a big focus.

Endlings: Season 2 (Hulu series) — Sci-fi fans will enjoy seeing the return of this crew, who must accept that they can change the future and (at least) make up for the mistakes of the past without achieving a full-on reckoning. The very fate of the planet and humanity depends on their continued fight, and the endearing group is here for it.

Outside The Wire (Netflix film) — Sorry to disappoint, this show has nothing to do with The Wire. It does, however, star Anthony Mackie as an android military officer, who must locate a doomsday device before the bad guys can get their hands on it, and all hell breaks loose. Damson Idris co-stars as a drone pilot who assists Mackie’s cyborg, and they’re both in full-on action mode.

Tiffany Trump Got Engaged At The White House On Donald’s Last Day, And The Awkward Timing Sticks Out

On the final day of her father’s presidency, Tiffany Trump has announced that she’s engaged to Nigerian multimillionaire Michael Boulos, who proposed to her in the Rose Garden on Tuesday. Trump shared the news on her official Instagram along with a photo of the engaged couple. “It has been an honor to celebrate many milestones, historic occasions and create memories with my family here at the White House, none more special than my engagement to my amazing fiancé Michael!” Trump wrote. “Feeling blessed and excited for the next chapter!”

As for whether President Trump gave the couple his blessing to get engaged in the Rose Garden and dominate headlines during his final moments in office, Page Six couldn’t confirm. Although, White House sources did say it’s a solid maybe:

It’s unclear whether Boulos asked President Trump for his permission, but a source said the fact they were at the White House for the proposal means it’s “highly likely” he did.

A White House source told Page Six: “The family is delighted.”

You can see Tiffany Trump’s wedding announcement below:

Given the fact that her dad is about to be booted out of the White House on Wednesday following a very public and very disastrous failed MAGA coup attempt, people on Twitter couldn’t help but note the awkward timing of Tiffany’s engagement.

And it was only a matter of time until the “Donald Trump doesn’t even know who Tiffany Trump is” jokes started rolling in because the president is an infamously strange father.

Folks also had fun with the fact that Trump can’t tweet about Tiffany’s engagement even if he somehow knew about it and/or her.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Complained About D.C.’s ‘Offensive’ Vetting Of National Guard Members, And People Pounced

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has a lengthy track record of leading into “offensive” territory, and his trashing of trans rights is only one example. However, the GOP mainstay wants everyone to know that he’s extremely unhappy with the D.C.’s vetting of National Guard members. The practice only makes sense, given that a massive influx of members descended to help protect the U.S. Capitol following the failed MAGA coup, but Abbott’s not here for it. He’s upset, and he wants all of Twitter to feel his displeasure.

“This is the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard,” Abbot tweeted on Tuesday evening. “No one should ever question the loyalty or professionalism of the Texas National Guard. @TexasGuard… I authorized more than 1,000 to go to DC… I’ll never do it again if they are disrespected like this.”

Abbott’s reaction preceded an Associated Press report that detailed how two U.S. Army National Guard members were discovered to have ties to fringe, far-right, white supremacist militias. As a result, these two members were removed from the security mission surrounding Joe Biden’s inauguration, and even though no specific plot was uncovered against Biden, the decision was made for “operational security” reasons. Given that a freaking insurrection of far-right QAnon MAGA heads resulted in five deaths (including two police officers) less than weeks ago, the vetting does not seem like an overreaction at all. Still, Abbott feels that this is “the most offensive thing” ever, and well, people have some responses. Mainly, they are “offended” too, but by Abbott. And his tweet certainly did not age well after less than a day.

No followup comment yet, right? You guessed it.

Woman declared dead in 2017 is in the fight of her life to prove she still walks among us

It must be terribly unnerving to wake up one day and realize the government thinks you’re dead, even though you’re alive and kicking. You’d figure that if you were declared dead and weren’t, you’d have some say in the matter.

However, for a woman in France, things haven’t been that easy.

Jeanne Pouchain, 58, who lives in the village of St. Joseph, near Lyon, had a rude awakening three years ago when she received a letter from the Lyon court of appeals declaring that her family members need to pay the money she allegedly owed.

Because, according to state records, she was deceased.

“My problem is that I’ve been declared dead,” she said according to KFGO.

Getting your identity stolen is a truly terrible ordeal, but Pouchain’s story shows that getting your life back after you’ve been declared dead is even more of a headache.

“I feel like I’m living a nightmare,” she said.

Pouchain is now living proof of how difficult it is to live if the government says you’re dead. She cannot drive, because if she gets pulled over her license is expired. She can’t go to the grocery store, in case someone asks her to provide ID for purchase.

She also can’t go to the hospital because she no longer has health insurance.

Her death has also frozen the joint checking account she has with her husband because she was never issued a death certificate.

“I no longer exist,” Pouchain said. “I don’t do anything…I sit on the veranda and write.” She called the situation “macabre.”

Pouchain’s woes stem from a grievance filed by a former employee seeking compensation after being fired twenty years ago. This suit combined with some farcical moves by the local bureaucracy resulted in a situation where Pouchain is legally deceased.

In 2004, an industrial tribunal ordered Pouchain to pay an ex-employee of her cleaning company €14,000 ($17,000) in damages. But, the suit was filed against the company, not Pouchain, so the money didn’t have to be paid out.

In 2009, the employee sued again, but the case was thrown out in court.

Seven years later, a court ruled in the employee’s favor and, during the proceedings, they said they hadn’t been able to reach Pouchain because she was deceased. So the court ordered her son to pay the damages.

The led the local governments to purge Pouchian from state documents, invalidating her health insurance, driver’s license, and bank account.

The fight for Poucian’s life has gone all the way to France’s highest court which threw out the case citing it wasn’t in its jurisdiction.

“I’m alive for my husband, for my son, for my loved ones, for the people around me, but for the justice system, I’m dead,” Pouchain laments.

So for three years, she has been fighting the government to reinstate her as a living, breathing entity so she can get back to living a government-sanctioned existence.

“The most important thing is to prove that I’m alive. To prove I exist,” said Pouchain. “I want the state to return my identity.”

Her lawyer has petitioned a court to grant a hearing where she can prove that, in fact, she is alive. “It’s my last chance to recover my life,” she said.

Pouchain’s s story is a pretty remarkable case of bureaucratic malfeasance. But it’s also a look at how much of our lives are intertwined with the state. In fact, if the government says you’re dead, you may as well be.

Sharon Van Etten Joined Local Natives For Their Moving Duet ‘Lemon’ On ‘Kimmel’

Toward the end of last year, Local Natives penned four songs to share in the form of their EP Sour Lemon. One of the tracks was “Lemon,” a moving duet between vocalist Taylor Rice and the acclaimed songwriter Sharon Van Etten. Following the EP’s release, Van Etten and the band got together in front of a picturesque California landscape to deliver a rendition of the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Joining together at golden hour with a mountain behind them, Rice and Van Etten harmonized the song’s tender melodies. Upon the track’s release, Sharon Van Etten detailed how her and Local Natives’ lives have changed since they first began writing the duet:

“From the time we started writing to recording to shooting the video, I have moved to LA, Taylor had a child who is now 10 1/2 months, and Ryan is now engaged. I connected with the song at each stage: Collaborating and getting to know each other, receiving their openness and generosity, recording the song and feeling the camaraderie and accepted as a part of the band, to shooting the video and reciprocating the longing and connection. Our friendship has grown since we first met, & this is a documentation of that…I’m looking forward to seeing where we all go from here.”

Paul George Can’t Rewrite His Playoff Narrative Yet, But He’s Off To A Sensational Start

Ever since that fateful day in 2018 when Paul George told the gathering of reporters in Oklahoma City that they hadn’t met “Playoff P” yet, he hasn’t been able to shake free of the jokes brought at his expense for playoff failures. With the Thunder, he and Russell Westbrook were unable to make it out of the first round in back-to-back seasons. That second season, in which Damian Lillard sent Oklahoma City home on a walk-off buzzer-beater and waved goodbye, to the dismantling of the team when George requested a trade to the Clippers to join up with Kawhi Leonard.

In the Bubble, George and Leonard both struggled, but because Kawhi’s reputation as a big game player had been cemented in Toronto, the majority of the blame and the jokes fell onto the surgically-repaired shoulders of George after blowing a 3-1 series lead to the Nuggets in the conference semis. In the months that followed, George didn’t particularly endear himself with his commentary on what happened when he questioned how Doc Rivers used him, playing into those that believe he fails to appropriately take responsibility for his own shortcomings.

However, George also vowed to play this season “with vengeance,” eager to use everything said about him as fuel to get back to an All-NBA level of play. Through the first month of the season, George has more than done that, playing some of the best basketball of his career to help lead the Clippers to a 10-4 record, a mere half-game back of the Lakers for first in the West.

After a postseason marred by shooting woes from three-point range (33.3 percent in 13 games), George has come out scalding from deep, shooting 51 percent on eight attempts per game. He’s registered a true shooting percentage of 68.8 percent, a figure typically reserved for centers. This preposterous efficiency may not be sustainable, but the confidence with which he’s shooting the ball has to be encouraging for the Clippers.

What’s rather incredible is, to this point, it hasn’t really mattered how George has gotten his looks, he’s been hitting just about everything. After complaining this offseason about Rivers asking him to do too much catch-and-shoot, the star forward is hitting an absurd 57.1 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes (which account for 27.2 percent of his shot attempts on the season). On pull-ups, that percentage only dips to 47.8 percent, as he simply exists right now in a state of constant rhythm, no matter the situation.

George has always been capable of terrific shooting — last season before the playoffs, he was a 42 percent three-point shooter — but he’s also taken a step forward thus far this season with his playmaking for others. He’s averaging a career-high 5.1 assists per game, taking advantage of the Clippers’ revamped roster that provides significantly more spacing for he and Leonard (who leads the team with 5.9 assists per game). Surrounded by shooters like Luke Kennard, Marcus Morris Sr., a resurgent Nic Batum, and even Serge Ibaka, George and Leonard have more space to attack downhill and the weapons around them to punish teams for collapsing.

The Clippers’ offseason wasn’t one that drew a lot of attention, but Kennard and Ibaka are upgrades over Landry Shamet and Montrezl Harrell and they seem to have struck gold in Batum, who looks healthy and engaged in ways he wasn’t on Charlotte teams that were stuck in the mud. George has quickly grown trusting of his new teammates and the flow of the Clippers offense in the first 13 games of the season has generally been tremendous in Ty Lue’s first season. They’ve found the balance between taking advantage of George’s shooting abilities and his playmaking ones, allowing him to feel more involved in running the offense but also getting him plenty of spot-up opportunities.

What makes discussing the Clippers so difficult right now is that the questions that exist for them, and more specifically for George, exist in the postseason. Regardless of how good they are in the regular season, they’ll need to wait until the playoffs roll around to really answer the questions that surround their franchise. George has responded on the court to his playoff flop as well as one could ask, and the Clippers as a team certainly look the part of a top contender again, playing elite offensive basketball and steady defense. Unfortunately, George and the Clippers cannot begin to rewrite their story in earnest until the late spring and summer, when the ghosts of playoffs past and present arrive and must be dispatched of with a trip, at minimum, to the conference finals.

For now, though, George is playing some of the best basketball of his life and the fortitude to do that after everything that happened in Orlando shouldn’t be discounted. He’s playing All-NBA caliber basketball and making a statement in the process, it’s just one that must be verified later on.

Hand Habits Gets To The Bottom Of It In The ‘4th Of July’ Video

Hand Habits (aka Meg Duffy) had one of 2019’s most beloved releases with the album Placeholder, and now they’re back with more. An EP, Dirt EP, is on the way, and today, Duffy has shared a video for the climactic folk-rocker “4th Of July.”

Duffy says of the track and video:

“‘4th Of July’ feels like trying again, rolling around in the wreckage of the past and finding new ways out of the maze of memory. For the video, I went to V and Adam and said I wanted to ‘just dig a hole’ and they turned that idea into a cinematic version of what it looks like to try and get to the bottom of a feeling.

Following the video’s premiere, Duffy shared some feedback they got from a relative: “my aunt said she doesn’t get the dirt and why did i dig a hole.”

Press materials note the EP explores “themes of growth and finding ways to let go of the parts of their past that no longer serve them” and that it “illuminates Duffy’s attempts to evolve beyond the confines of their past.”
