For a lot of people, tattoos are an intensely personal thing, meaning that there needs to be a strong inspiration behind the ink before it hits the skin. Phoebe Bridgers just got a new tattoo, and it’s definitely based on a moving experience that she shared in 2019. Bridgers posted a photo of the new ink, which depicts a sword stabbed through a piece of paper. Bridgers wrote on Instagram, “a fan brought me a note with a sword stabbed into it after a show and someone else got a tattoo of it so I did too.”
Bridgers touched on the backstory in her description, but to recap: In March 2019, while speaking out against Ryan Adams, Bridgers revealed on Twitter, “I was on tour with Ryan on women’s day a few years ago and he got every woman on the crew a sword except for me.” That tale stuck with one of Bridgers’ fans, so following a show soon after Bridgers’ tweet, the fan left Bridgers a sword. It was stabbed through a note that read, “To protec, To attacc, To look f*cking tight as hecc. Phoebe, I hope you like this (real, authentic) sword. You don’t need it, but you deserve it. Thanks for sharing your sad songs with us.” Bridgers shared a photo of the gift and wrote, “someone left this for me after the show last night I’m not crying you’re crying.” Now, nearly two years later, the impact of that moment apparently still resonates with Bridgers in a significant way, enough for her to memorialize it on her skin.

Usually, it’s fans who get tattoos inspired by their favorite artists, not the other way around. That said, it looks like Bridgers recently helped a fan get some ink inspired by her: Somebody tweeted at Bridgers, “phoebe write i buried a hatchet its coming up lavender in a piece of paper so i can get it tattoed challenge,” and a week later, Bridgers provided the written “Smoke Signals” lyric as requested.
Netflix continues to churn out an unbelievable amount of fresh content to keep everyone entertained while the chaos of the outside world continues to swirl around us. This week’s lineup is both light and heavy, including more from Matt Groening getting medieval, a few documentaries about the drug trade and a notorious serial killer who plagued 1980s Los Angeles, and Anthony Mackie being the super-serum sucking soldier for a change. Let’s not forget about the non-original series that are weaving in and out of Netflix’s coffers as well (because we listed those for you, too).
Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) the streaming platform this week.
Disenchantment: Season 3 (Netflix series streaming 1/15)
Matt Groening of The Simpsons fame (and more) is still cranking away on this adult animated comedy fantasy series that digs into the many misadventures of boozy and feisty characters, including ogres, mermaids, walruses, and even human fools while exploring Dreamland. In this batch of episodes, the hard-drinking Princess Bean continues to explore her own destiny and identity as she comes into power. Her friends are all striking out into new lands but love coming home, and don’t worry, Bean’s personal demon, Luci, and feisty elf companion, Elfo, are still a big focus. Come for the voice work from Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery; stay for the mature animated escapism.
Outside The Wire: Season 3 (Netflix film streaming 1/15)
Sorry to disappoint, but this show has nothing to do with The Wire. It does, however, star Anthony Mackie back in action mode, which is one of many wonderful ways to see him, an android military officer, who must locate a doomsday device before the bad guys can get their hands on it, and all hell breaks loose. Damson Idris co-stars as a drone pilot who assists Mackie’s cyborg, and they’re both in full-on action mode.
Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer: Season 3 (Netflix limited series streaming 1/13)
This spellbinding docuseries dives deep into the investigation of brutal serial killer Richard Ramirez, who terrorized Los Angeles in the mid 1980s. Law enforcement found themselves puzzled by Ramirez’s apparent lack of rhyme or reason, given that his series of murders and sexual assaults at first appeared to be disconnected. After round-the-clock work by the members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, breaks in the case eventually arrived, and this series seeks to paint a portrait of how citizens feared becoming the next victim in this real-life horror story.
Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy (Netflix film streaming 1/11)
This documentary goes back to the burgeoning crack epidemic of the early 1980s, followed by a metaphorical tsunami that ripped through America’s inner cities. The effects were not short-lived, and this film jumps decades ahead to examine the enduring destruction wrought by this drug, along with the associated and ongoing marginalization of Black and Brown people trapped within the U.S. prison and healthcare cycles.

This past December marked one year since Juice WRLD’s tragic death at Chicago’s Midway International Airport. The rapper’s passing rocked the music world and unfortunately left his fans and peers to imagine the heights he would have reached. Since his untimely death, his faithful listeners have been able to enjoy a new package of songs from him thanks to his Legends Never Die project. Now, they are able to hear him once again thanks to his new collaboration with Young Thug. The two join forces for their “Bad Boy” single which arrives with a video directed by Cole Bennett.
The visual begins with a comforting statement from Juice WRLD before he declares himself as a bad boy just like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. He and Young Thug live up to the label as they both appear as sinister beings while riding around town to meet with a group of creepy-looking individuals. “Bad Boy” stands as the duo’s third official collaboration following 2019’s “On God” and “Mannequin Challenge,” which appeared on Juice WRLD’s Death Race For Love and Thug’s So Much Fun respectively. Back in May 2019, Juice revealed during a GQ interview that he and Thug had a joint album in the works. “It’s going to happen,” he said. “Just whenever we put it out, I don’t know.” He also confirmed ten songs were complete at the time of the interview. Hopefully, fans will be able to hear some of the songs, or even receive the joint project, at some point in the future.
You can watch the “Bad Boy” video above.

DaBaby is known for his ability to turn out projects at a quick rate. In fact, since his March 2019 breakout effort Baby On Baby, the North Carolina native has given fans two additional full-length projects, Kirk and Blame It On Baby, as well as his My Brother’s Keeping (Long Live G) EP. With that being said, it should be expected that the rapper has another project on the way and the rollout for it could begin with his new single, “Masterpiece.” The assertive track presents DaBaby as his most natural self: boastful, unrelenting, and fast-paced. On the three-minute tune, he shows his new lover — DaniLeigh possibly? — an ample amount of love and appreciation due to their physical qualities and attributes that include loyalty and support.
He also used the single to touch on his life, speaking about how traumatic moments, which include his Walmart shooting incident back in 2018, continue to affect him today. All in all the song is a return to form for DaBaby and it should hopefully lead to more enjoyable outputs from the rapper. The new single arrives after the rapper was unfortunately arrested while he was shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Authorities were tipped about DaBaby and his crew of three men carrying a weapon and when officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a loaded handgun in his SUV. He was then arrested on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a loaded firearm.
Hayley Williams has been productive during the pandemic, recording acoustic covers for fans as a way to pass the time while stuck indoors. She took a break from her band, Paramore, to release solo material last year, and this shift seemed to spark an affinity for releasing covers as well. After putting out the final installment of the Petals For Armor: Self Serenades acoustic EP in late December featuring tracks like “Simmer,” she’s back to the covers game. And even if her original material is stunning — my personal favorite off Petals For Armor was “Cinnamon,” and the acoustic versions are equally excellent, it’s fascinating to hear the way she can dismantle and rebuild other artist’s songs, too.
Tonight she’s taking on the ’90s trip-hop track “Teardrop” by Massive Attack, with the original featuring vocals by Elizabeth Fraser, formerly of the Cocteau Twins, who also wrote the lyrics. Singing at home with dim lighting in front of a table covered in candles wearing a robe and a towel on her head, Williams brings an appropriate amount of solemnity to the song despite her casual attire. Initially performing the song for Jack Antonoff’s benefit concert for the Ally Coalition Talent Show, she’s now given fans an official version. This new cover follows up other tracks done last year, like SZA’s “Drew Barrymore” and Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.” Listen to the new cover above.

Flo Milli grabbed the attention of the world in 2020 with the release of her Ho, Why Is You Here? debut. The project was met with critical acclaim and found many of her peers rallying around her while newfound supporters of the rapper spoke nothing but good things about it. With a new year in front of her, the Alabama native kicked off her 2021 campaign by sticking to her script with her new single, “Roaring 20s.” The track, which features production from Kenny Beats, presents a flip of Topol’s 1971 song, “If I Were A Rich Man.” The light-hearted song that appeared in the Fiddler On The Roof musical of the same year is transformed into Flo Mill’s thrilling single where she raps about her “rich b*tch tendencies” while flaunting her newfound fame.
“Roaring 20s” stands as the lead-off hitter for what fans hope to be a 2021 filled with home run shots. It comes after Flo Mill put forth an impressive year following the release of Ho, Why Is You Here?. Shortly after, she would hit her supporters with a video for “Send The Addy/May I” before she took her talents around the musical world for a collection of guest verses. Over the next few months, fans would see her work with Snot, Benee, Yung Baby Tate, and PJ. Perhaps her biggest moment of 2020 came when she brought her undeniable rap skills to the BET Hip-Hop Awards stage for a strong freestyle besides Deante Hitchcock, Buddy, and Ade.
Back in October, Ariana Grande returned for the third consecutive year with a new album. Her sixth full-length effort, Positions, was well-received by critics and adored by her supporters thanks to tracks like “Positions” and “34+35.” More than three months after fans received it, Ariana returns with a thrilling gift: a remix of “34+35” with Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat. Fans of the trio spent the last 24 hours eagerly waiting for the song to arrive after the singer began teasing the remix on Thursday. Luckily for them, the three artists fulfilled all expectations of the song. Doja supplies a verse that seeks to make her new lover forget about their girl by spending the night and “69 without the Tekashi,” while Megan gets herself ready for a steamy night and makes sure to flaunt her physical qualities in the process.
Ariana first announced the remix with a video that showed three unidentifiable silhouettes. This caused fans to throw out a number of possibilities for who would appear on the track. Names like Chloe x Halle and Nicki Minaj in addition to Megan and Doja came up. After a day of guessing games, the singer unveiled Megan and Doja as the two artists on the remix.
If you’re want to hear more collaboration between the trio, Doja previously teased collaborations with Megan and Ariana for her upcoming third album which fans can expect to arrive at some point this year.
You can listen to the remix in the video above.
Positions is out now via Republic.

Though today was a big day for his career, it didn’t end up being a particularly good one for Joshua Bassett. Though he released his new single “Lie Lie Lie” earlier today, a song that is inextricably linked right now with Olivia Rodrigo’s smash hit “Drivers License,” but now the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star shared on Instagram that he’s had to spend the day in the ER. First he’s quick to clarify that his hospitalization isn’t related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but that it did include surgery. Check out his full post below.
“welp… not the first place i assumed i’d be on my Lie Lie Lie release day… the ER!! (before you ask, no it’s not covid.) after an unknown, uncomfortable feeling turned into, times 10, the worst pain of my life, i figured i’d just try to sleep. after multiple, very very ugly days and nights, i had no choice today but be taken to the hospital. i’d like to say thank you!!!! for all the support on the song!!! i’ve been doing what i can today to stay involved. had my first surgery tonight ! gonna rest at the hospital and the doctors will see what they see in the morn!

Everyone will be wishing him a safe procedure and a speedy recovery.
The Portland Trail Blazers came into Thursday night’s game with the Pacers riding a four-game winning streak and finally seeming like they were putting things together after an offseason that bred significant optimism in the Pacific Northwest.
The last piece of the puzzle they’ve been waiting on to get back into the form of old has been Jusuf Nurkic, who arrived to training camp late after dealing with a family situation back home in Bosnia and recently explained that he’s still not back to 100 percent, physically or mentally. Still, he’s continued to put in the work to get his conditioning back and has had some glimpses of the Nurkic of old, all the while seeing the Blazers steadily find their collective form around him.
Unfortunately, the big man left Thursday’s game in the third quarter after suffering something of a freak injury, as the team announced quickly that X-rays revealed a fracture in his right wrist after he swiped down on a Malcolm Brogdon drive.
Nurkic took a swipe at the ball on defense and appeared to injure his hand. More info to come… pic.twitter.com/5Y4s5UDiOG
It’s a brutal blow to Nurkic, who had five points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes before the injury, as he felt his best basketball was very much still to come this season. His return last season from a scary broken leg suffered late in the 2019 season was a big boon for Portland in their run to the 8-seed and his presence will be significantly missed for however long he is out with the wrist fracture — that it’s his right wrist may lengthen his return as that’s the shooting hand for the big man.
With Zach Collins likewise still sidelined with injury, Portland will likely turn to Enes Kanter and Harry Giles for additional minutes, as well as some small-ball lineups to make up for their lack of center depth. We’ll learn a firmer timetable for Nurkic’s return in the coming days but for now can simply hope for a speedy and full recovery.
It seemed no one was happier about Donald Trump’s ban from Twitter than Sacha Baron Cohen. The director and star of Borat and its Trump-focused sequel in 2020 has long railed against Trump and the damage he’s done with his social media presence while in office, and his deplatforming has been a big win for critics of the president in the wake of the violent MAGA riot he sparked in Washington earlier in the month.
But for Baron Cohen, Trump’s permanent ban from Twitter is simply not enough. Other social media networks exist, and he’s working very hard to make sure all of them realize the threat of letting Trump communicate on them even once he’s out of office. Which is why Baron Cohen has been particularly active on Twitter attempting to pressure Google to permanently keep Trump off of YouTube.
Earlier in the week, Baron Cohen noted that Trump has actually gained followers on YouTube since he was banned from plenty of other social media channels, and put pressure on Google to follow suit and remove other Trump channels on YouTube.
NEW: Trump’s YouTube Channel has GAINED 30,000 subscribers this week.
Other companies are cutting ties with Trump. YouTube is profiting!
He did see some success, as YouTube did ban Trump for a week as of Wednesday. But as Baron Cohen noted, that means he will likely get more chances to accumulate “strikes” until the platform pulled the plug for good.
YouTube suspends Trump!
But only for 1 week. With YouTube’s “3 strikes” rule, Trump gets to incite violence 2 MORE TIMES before it bans him!
On Thursday, Baron Cohen shared a letter that had circulated from some Alphabet — YouTube’s parent company — employees asking the company to make the ban permanent.
Wow.
YouTube’s own employees agree that YouTube plays a “key role” in “fascist recruitment” in the US, including the Trump extremists who attacked the Capitol.
The hashtag #BanTrumpSaveDemocracy has seen a lot of activity in the days since Trump’s failed MAGA coup, with Baron Cohen leading the way in putting pressure on YouTube to remove Trump’s presence and prevent him from spreading more potentially violent rhetoric. And though his focus lately has been on getting Trump off YouTube for good, it’s important to note that social media is likely to be something Baron Cohen focuses on well after Trump is out of office. He tweeted ominously about Mark Zuckerberg following Trump’s loss in the fall, and Trump leaving social media doesn’t fix the rest of the mess of people that were radicalized at the hands of algorithms and misinformation in the past few years.
