A few months ago was the 20th anniversary of Linkin Park’s 2000 album Hybrid Theory, a defining nu-metal album that launched Linkin Park to stardom. The band celebrated last year with multiple new deluxe editions, but Linkin Park is still looking to honor the album in 2021. They did so today by dropping a new remix of Hybrid Theory‘s lead single, “One Step Closer,” from 100 Gecs.
100 Gecs’ reinterpretation of the song is also sort of a cover, as the duo offers new vocal contributions as well as new instrumentation. As one might expect, a new frenetic electronic energy is introduced to the song, and 100 Gecs’ sensibilities play into the song wonderfully.
Linkin Park indicated that this remix is the first in a series of new reworks in the style of their Reanimation remix album, writing on social media, “Keeping the #HT20 celebration going into 2021 will be a series of new reanimated tracks. Part of the spirit of Reanimation was to take the Hybrid Theory songs that people knew so well, and let innovative artists flip them in ways nobody expected.”

Netflix knew that 2021 wouldn’t instantly be better than 2020, so they made sure to keep the content coming while social distancing guidelines are still the best idea out there. This week’s lineup has a little of everything. Not only is Nic Cage hosting an entertaining series that digs into your favorite (and unfavorite) curse words, but there’s a meditation-guiding show to help you find some serenity. In case you want some serious drama, there’s an Oscar-tipped performance from Vanessa Kirby on tap as well, and let’s not forget about the spooky series that digs into the possibility of an afterlife.
Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) the streaming platform this week.
History of Swear Words (Netflix series streaming 1/5)
A Nic Cage series? Yes please. A Nic Cage series where he teaches us lessons about expletives? Give it to me now. Cage hosts here with an array of guests — including Jim Jefferies, Zainab Johnson, Nick Offerman, Sarah Silverman, Baron Vaughn, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Joel Kim Booster, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, Nikki Glaser, Patti Harrison, London Hughes — to dive deep into his proudly profane stance. Over the course of six episodes, you’ll learn about the origins of “F*ck,” “Sh*t,” “B*tch,” “D*ck,” “Pu**y,” and “Damn.” Alright!
Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf star as Martha and Sean, respectively, who experience an unimaginable tragedy when a home birth goes wrong. Martha then undertakes a yearlong odyssey while coping with grief and her relationship with Sean, which (unsurprisingly) strains under the pressure of their mutual loss. Meanwhile, Ellen Burstyn plays her overbearing mom, and Molly Parker plays the publicly shamed midwife. Look for this movie (and the performances) to be a big awards contender.
Dive into this investigative series about whether or not the afterlife exists and whether death is really the end of life. As one might expect, this show provides firsthand accounts from those who have come close to (and even experienced) the D word to provide an illuminating view of the ultimate question that plagues us. The show’s based upon Leslie Kean’s best-selling book of the same name.
Headspace Guide to Meditation (Netflix series streaming 1/1)
Need a little meditation (in)action? This series will be one of three Headspace projects (produced by Vox Media Studios) in 2021, and this one will lead with eight episodes that will teach viewers different mindfulness techniques to learn the surprisingly difficult practices — including stress, sleep, and letting go — of how to meditate. It’s damn hard to do, especially in our current age where information never stops coming our way, but this series might help convince everyone that meditation can be both accessible and… easy? Not to mention interactive.

Dvsn arguably had one of the best R&B albums in 2020 with A Muse In Their Feelings. The effort was their first in almost three years, but it was beyond worth the wait. However, the patience of their supporters will be rewarded to a further extent as the duo announced a new album with the arrival of their new single, “Use Somebody.” Upon listening to the song, it may have an extremely familiar tune and that’s because it interpolates Kings Of Leon’s 2008 hits: “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody,” both from their Only By The Night album. Dvsn’s first track of the year came with the news that their fourth album, Amusing Her Feeling, a play on the title of their third album, would drop next week.
A Muse In Their Feelings is a 16-track effort that sees the Toronto duo comprised of singer Daniel Day and producer Ninteen85 step out of their comfort zone and give their fans tracks that veered into the dancehall and New Orleans bounce lanes. They put out the excellent album with help from Partynextdoor, Ty Dolla Sign, Jessie Reyez, Summer Walker, and more. With that chapter in the past, fans can look forward to Amusing Her Feeling which arrives next week January 15.
You can listen to “Use Somebody” above.

Thanks to the beautiful work of social media, RMR saw his breakout moment arrive in 2020 thanks to the overnight success of his “Rascal” single. Fast forward almost a full year and the enigmatic act is back with new music for fans. His latest release comes in the form of his new “Her Honeymoon” video.
In the cinematic effort, RMR takes viewers on a journey through broken love and betrayal. It begins with him and his lover sitting at opposite ends of the couch as the singer details the failing aspects of their relationship. The “Dealer” singer departs their house to run a few errands and his partner uses the opportunity to betray him and steal a briefcase that holds his true identity. She quickly departs the house to meet up with a man in a quiet location, but this is where the plot twist comes in.
RMR pauses the ongoing narrative to let viewers know that he was unsure how he wanted the new visual to end, so he opted to show them three different conclusions. The first finds her selling his identity to the man she meets up with while the second depicts a deal-gone-wrong that results in the woman shooting the man in self-defense. The last scenario presents the deal in which his identity is supposed to be sold as one RMR setup the woman and catch her in her act of treason. After things go left, she rushes home all to find the singer standing at the door furious at what she attempted to do to him.
The video arrives after RMR dropped off his debut project, Drug Dealing Is A Lost Art, last summer. The nine-track effort was an impressive intro that showed plenty of promise thanks to features from Westside Gun, Lil Baby, Young Thug, and Future.
You can watch the RMR’s new video above.

A day after inciting a mob to invade the US Capitol and interrupt the certification of an election he lost, Donald Trump finally admitted defeat in a lie-filled video he posted to Twitter once his account was unlocked by the social media company. Several lawmakers implored Trump’s cabinet, including vice president Mike Pence, to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove him from office, while other lawmakers weighed whether they should impeach him a second time in the dying days of his presidency.
There are also investigations into exactly what caused the chaos on Capitol Hill, and whether Trump bears legal responsibility for the mob of his own supporters who broke into the Capitol brandishing Trump and confederate battle flags. The coup attempt shocked the world and left four dead, which is why the fact that Trump may intend to pardon himself as one of his last acts as president seem especially noteworthy.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Trump is weighing whether he will pardon himself, which is something that may not even be possible for a president to do because, well, it’s never been attempted.
In several conversations since Election Day, Mr. Trump has told advisers that he is considering giving himself a pardon and, in other instances, asked whether he should and what the effect would be on him legally and politically, according to the two people. It was not clear whether he had broached the topic since he incited his supporters on Wednesday to march on the Capitol, where some stormed the building in a mob attack.
Mr. Trump has shown signs that his level of interest in pardoning himself goes beyond idle musings. He has long maintained he has the power to pardon himself, and his polling of aides’ views is typically a sign that he is preparing to follow through on his aims. He has also become increasingly convinced that his perceived enemies will use the levers of law enforcement to target him after he leaves office.
No president has ever issued a pardon for themselves, and its unprecedented nature would only be the latest part of the Trump presidency to break every conceivable norm of the office he holds. And while there may not be much more Trump can do to damage the presidency and the very fabric of democracy in America in the final days before January 20, many are worried about the precedent a move for self-clemency would bring. Trump has many times said he was above the law as president, but a move like a self-pardon would bring that sentiment much closer to reality.
Bloomberg also reported Thursday that Trump is weighing pardons for a number of other members of his family, White House officials and musicians like Lil Wayne and Kodak Black.
Preemptive pardons are under discussion for top White House officials who have not been charged with crimes, including Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, senior adviser Stephen Miller, personnel chief John McEntee, and social media director Dan Scavino.
The president’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, her husband, Jared Kushner, who both hold White House positions, are also under consideration, the people said. Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani has also discussed the issue of a pardon with the president.
Many things that have happened in the four years of Donald Trump’s presidency have been dismissed simply because that’s not what is supposed to be allowed to happen. But in the wake of a coup attempt encouraged by the president himself, it’s difficult to downplay any news of absurd things Trump hopes to do while still in power, and how desperate he is to avoid consequences for the chaos he’s sewn.
After making a fairly quick return to drop his 2020 album, My Life 4Hunnid, it appears YG could have more up his sleeve in 2021. Kicking off the campaign for the new year, the Compton rapper slides through with his latest track, “Hit Em Up.” YG’s latest effort sees him cruising with his 4Hunnid labelmates, Day Sulan and D3szn, over the track’s drill-leaning production.
The My Krazy Life rapper leads the way on the song while holding down the hook responsibilities for it as well. After YG completes his turn, D3szn lays an aggressive rap verse that shows a new side of the rapper than the one we heard on YG’s “Bloodwalk” effort. Last, but certainly not least, Day Sulan brings everything to a close with a hard-hitting verse of her own.
While fans shouldn’t expect another project from YG in 2021 just yet, there is a good chance he steps back to let his new 4Hunnid artists shine instead. Day Sulan and D3szn both signed to the label in 2020, but their solo releases have been far and few. Sulan has given fans just two singles: “Mascara” and “Big” with Rubi Rose so far, though she appeared on YG’s “Equinox” single last year. D3szn’s productivity has been about the same, with his growing fan base getting a preview of his potential thanks to three 2020 singles. A lot could change for them both this year, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
Jazmine Sullivan is regarded as one of, if not the best, vocalists to step foot into the R&B genre over the last decade. Her debut album Fearless and her most recent release, 2015’s Reality Show were both met with undeniable acclaim while landing her a number of well-deserved Grammy nominations.
However, since that 2015 album, Sullivan stayed rather quiet for the most part before making her return towards the end of 2020 with a pair of singles. Now, the Philly singer is back in action with the release of her new EP, Heaux Tales, and one of its brightest and most thrilling moments comes on her “On It” collaboration with Ari Lennox.
On the Heaux Tales track, Sullivan and Lennox give a sultry number that finds them both detailing their desires to their lover. While their passion is high and fiery, they won’t allow their partner to explore their body and receive the blessing the ladies have to offer without first proving they deserve it. The two singers seek “something impressive” from them before embarking on a night of passionate love-making.
Heaux Tales also boasts strong singles like “Lost One” and “Pick Up My Feelings,” which both helped to create excitement for Sullivan’s project. Elsewhere, guest appearances from Anderson .Paak (“Pricetags”) and HER (“Girl Like Me“) are made on the Philly singer’s first release in over five years.
For the first time in their careers, Russ and Lil Baby have joined forces for a new collaboration. The track, which is entitled “Ugly,” is one Russ has been teasing for the better part of the last week. The new release is an equally triumphant and egotistic effort that finds both rappers asserting their dominance and presence in whatever space they step in.
“I don’t gotta say, ‘What’s up’ to you, I don’t gotta say, ‘Hey,’” Russ proclaims on the track. “And if you talk sh*t, then it’s up with you, and that’s where it’s gon’ stay.” As the production’s trumpets continue to blare throughout Russ’ first verse, Lil Baby sticks to the track’s display of overconfidence with 16 bars that focus on his luxury cars, jewelry, and monetary gains while he brushes off issues in his love life as a result of his infidelity.
“Ugly” also arrives with a music video that sees Russ and Lil Baby in a strip club having the time of their lives as a slew of women dance around them. The song comes after a successful 2020 for both acts. Russ shared his third album, Shake The Snow Globe which was initially a 14 track effort with help from Rick Ross, Kiana Lede, Benny The Butcher, and more before a deluxe edition with seven more songs arrived.
He also dropped his Chomp EP which found him going toe-to-toe with some of today’s best lyricists including Ab-Soul, Kxng Crooked, and Black Thought. As for Lil Baby, he had last year on lock thanks to the success of his My Turn album and “The Bigger Picture,” the latter which helped him land a pair of nominations at the upcoming Grammy awards.
Unfortunately for DaBaby, he’ll have to spend the early moments of the new year in handcuffs after he was arrested in Beverly Hills. According to TMZ on Thursday, the North Carolina rapper and his crew had just finished shopping at a Moncler store on Rodeo Drive when they were approached by officers who stopped and detained them, then conducted a search.
Sources close to the officers reveal that an employee at the store made a 911 call to report that DaBaby and the three other men that were with him were carrying weapons. Law enforcement discovered a loaded handgun during the search and ultimately arrested the “Rockstar” rapper on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a loaded firearm.
Onlookers in the area captured his arrest on camera, one that was peaceful. At first, the rapper and his crew were all placed in handcuffs, but TMZ reports that DaBaby was the only one taken into custody. Fans will have to wait and see how the situation plays out, but for the time being the rapper and his supporters can look forward to the upcoming Grammy Awards.
DaBaby landed a number of nominations in categories that include Record of the Year, Best Melodic Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song, all of which boast his chart-topping “Rockstar” single with Roddy Ricch. He also earned a nomination in the Best Rap Performance category for “BOP.”
Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s most watched shows at the moment, making a long run for the period drama about courtship in London likely. But one of its biggest stars may have his sights set on a much bigger franchise if betting odds are to be believed.
According to Variety, an emerging candidate on the betting markets to become the next James Bond is the Duke himself from the Shondra Rhimes-produced drama. That’s Regé-Jean Page to those who haven’t streamed the steam drama, which premiered recently and has risen to the top of the platform’s most-watched shows.
And as the show’s popularity has grown, so have the odds that Page may actually be in the running to replace Daniel Craig in the role.
Ladbrokes’ odds on which actor will play the next Bond is a closely followed process in the U.K. Page is now just 5/1 in the betting with Ladbrokes to replace Craig as Bond, having previously been 40/1 before Christmas.
“Tom Hardy still leads the way as favorite, with James Norton close behind in second place. But it really is all to play for in the race for 007 and RJP has a great chance if the odds are anything to go by,” Ladbrokes representative Alex Apati tells Variety.
It would certainly be an interesting path to Bond for Page, who plays the Duke of Hastings on the Regency drama. And a Ladbrokes rep explained to Variety that these sort of shifts in odds tend to happen for actors who get notoriety for a particular role, only to have their odds drop once the attention fades. But with speculation that a new Bond will be announced before the last Craig-led Bond film hits theaters, Page may have become the talk of Netflix at just the right time.
