AOC’s Victory Tweets Offer Some Advice To Democrats While The U.S. Awaits Presidential Results

No one (not even her critics) can accuse Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) of not having an impeccable social-media game. Even more tellingly, it’s obvious that she writes her own tweets, and whether she’s jousting with Big Oil or calling out silly and sexist takes from the GOP about fashion, AOC is equally at ease while confronting opponents. On Election Tuesday, however, AOC found herself in the position of talking to her own party while the U.S. as a whole awaits presidential results.

Granted, AOC certainly had reason to celebrate. She won her second-term bid for New York’s 14th congressional district, and other members of “The Squad” (Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, all women of color like AOC) also won relection. AOC’s victory was no surprise, however, unlike the disconcerting non-results for the biggest election race in the U.S. Since multiple battleground areas won’t post results for days (possibly not until Friday), AOC had advice different from that of CNN’s Jake Tapper (who warned, “Don’t get high on your own supply”). AOC believes that Biden could have adopted a more Latino-friendly strategy with the Latino community.

“I won’t comment much on tonight’s results as they are evolving and ongoing,” AOC tweeted. “[B]ut I will say we’ve been sounding the alarm about Dem vulnerabilities w/ Latinos for a long, long time… There is a strategy and a path, but the necessary effort simply hasn’t been put in.”

“We have work to do,” she added.

It’s a fair set of statements, given that Biden did focus a lot more on the Rust Belts that Hillary Clinton did in 2016, but with Trump (almost certainly) taking Florida, Biden likely underperformed with a very important community in that state. Again, we probably won’t know for days whether this omission will cost Biden the election, but yep, AOC has certainly pointed out some room for Democratic improvement in the future.

Jake Tapper And Others Rebuked Donald Trump For Claiming The Election Was Being ‘Stolen’ From Him In A Misspelled Tweet

Election night was not exactly satisfying, especially for the millions of Americans who hoped the trajectory of the next four years would be decided quickly once polls closed. Among those upset was president Donald Trump, who shortly after midnight tweeted a baseless accusation that the election was being, in his eyes, unfairly taken away from him. This saw swift rebuke across the board, including by CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

While the most exciting moment of the election’s early coverage may have been a battle between John King and Wolf Blitzer, Jake Tapper soon took charge, stepping up to offer a strong rebuke of Trump, who claimed to be up “big” and, once again, alleged voter fraud without proof.

The tweet came shortly after Joe Biden spoke in Delaware, where he pled with Americans to practice patience and wait for all votes to be counted. States like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and even Georgia were waiting for large numbers of absentee and early votes to be counted, while North Carolina and other states remained up in the air. That led Tapper to rebuke the president shortly after midnight, taking aim at the tweet and the dangerous accusation that the election was being stolen.

“No one is trying to steal the election,” Tapper said. “Counting votes is how this works.”

Tapper also pointed out that Trump’s baseless accusation misspelled “polls,” then going on to call the claims that nameless people are trying to “steal” the election a dangerous accusation.

Even NBC’s Brian Williams made fun of the misspelling. Soon thereafter, the tweet was deleted and replaced with one that had “Polls” spelled correctly.

It’s worth noting that Twitter, however, immediately hid that tweet behind a disclaimer that “Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process.” Which, of course, is correct. But that has rarely mattered for the president over the last four years, and it certainly didn’t matter on election night.

Jake Tapper Warned CNN Viewers Not To ‘Get High On Your Own Supply,’ And The Jokes Won’t Stop

No one knows anything for sure tonight in the U.S. except for one thing: this presidential election is a nail-biting event. John King is apparently frustrated with Wolf Blitzer’s excitement, and Martin King Jr.’s daughter is fed up with Mitch McConnell’s victory speech out of Kentucky, and so many states are still too close to call in the Trump-Biden race. We were already in for a long night, and now, we’re in for a long week while waiting for actual results in multiple battleground areas that will post tallies in the days to come. So, when Jake Tapper finally surfaced on CNN’s airwaves around 10:00pm EST, he advised viewers to chill out while waiting.

Then Tapper’s terminology grew more ominous when he declared that Democrats were certainly too optimistic while hoping for a Biden landslide. As he put it, “You can’t get high on your own supply.”

What’s going on with CNN? The analogy’s solid, considering the full quote: “There were a lot of people out there who paid attention to the most Trump-hating pundits out there, who were saying for months that this was going to be a landslide, and as they say, ‘You can’t get high on your own supply.’” Still, it’s an unexpected reference to see on cable news, despite our unusual election circumstances.

Is Tapper a secret Narcos: Mexico fan? Well, that quote probably goes back much further, all the way to Al Pacino’s 1983 turn in the Brian De Palma-directed Scarface remake. And some people are pulling Biggie Smalls’ “10 Crack Commandments” lyrics into this. We’re all looking for some levity here while stressing out, so let’s do this.

Hang in there, everyone.

Election Night Is Still Young, And CNN’s John King Can Barely Contain His Frustration With The Excitable Wolf Blitzer

Election night in America was long presumed to be a long one in the longest year on record, and unfortunately for those watching CNN, anchor Wolf Blitzer didn’t take it any more comfortable for them. Blitzer got on a lot of viewers’ bad sides early in the night with his constant pointing out just how close the race was in certain states, especially early on in the night when, well, not a lot of votes had been counted in full.

This is kind of a habit for Blitzer, so perhaps we should not be surprised by what CNN looked like in the early hours of election night coverage. But even CNN colleague John King couldn’t keep up the act and had to express his frustration with Blitzer’s comments.

As Mediaite documented on video, Blitzer was extremely amped up early about basically every result, leading to both getting snippy during the early hours of the coverage:

A notable back and forth occurred while King was reporting on Florida’s incoming results:

“Florida is now in. Look how close it is,” Blitzer said.

“Florida is close. That’s not breaking news. That part is not breaking news,” King replied.

People certainly noticed that Wolf was extremely excited early on.

Blitzer’s battles with King got a lot of people Tweeting through their frustrations, and making jokes.

Even The Onion got in on the act.

The phrase “too close to call” or “too early to call” is basically synonymous with election coverage, but Blitzer certainly made it his signature statement on Saturday.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Daughter Isn’t Here For Mitch McConnell Invoking Her Father In His Victory Speech

There was a chance that Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, would lose his re-election campaign in Kentucky, but not a very good one. Despite actually laughing at critiques of his mishandling of the pandemic, he still became one of the first major winners of Election Night, with most outlets calling his win over Democratic challenger Amy McGrath relatively early on, paving the path for his seventh term in the U.S. Senate. What many perhaps didn’t expect is that he would have the brass to invoke no less than Martin Luther King Jr. in his victory speech. But that’s exactly what he did.

“When I witnessed Dr. Martin Luther King’s March on Washington speech as an intern in 1963, I dreamed about doing big things to help my state and our country,” McConnell told the crowd, with zero apparent sense of shame or care that his words could go viral, and not in a good way. “I never imagined Kentuckyians would make me the longest-serving senator in our state’s history.”

McConnell’s statement, naturally, had a lot of detractors. Among the most prominent? King’s youngest daughter, Berenice King. The minister and CEO of The King Center, wasn’t having it, and she was quick to make her thoughts known over social media.

“But my father’s dream was to create the #BelovedCommunity, in part by eradicating #racism, #militarism and #poverty. Certainly not by denying #healthcare to human beings or by separating Brown immigrant children from their parents,” King wrote over Twitter, adding the hashtags “#TripleEvils #BigThings #BeLove”

King wasn’t the only one horrified and disgusted by McConnell’s words.

McConnell, who’s 78, defeated McGrath, a retired Marine combat pilot who challenged him as a political outsider. As of this writing, there’s still a chance McConnell will no longer be the Senate Majority Leader.

DaBaby’s Brother Has Reportedly Died From A Self-Inflicted Gunshot

According to a report from TMZ, DaBaby’s brother, Glen Johnson, died on Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina from a self-inflicted gun wound. The report says that Johnson posted a video of himself hours before his death, showing him in a car, visibly upset and crying, while in possession a gun. He also spoke about how many times he was “wronged.” Johnson is survived by his three daughters. DaBaby has yet to respond to the reported death.

The passing of DaBaby’s older brother is the second death to occur in the rapper’s family over the last year and a half. Back in mid-2019, the rapper’s father passed away shortly after the release of his debut album Baby On Baby. He spoke about the incident ahead of his sophomore album, Kirk.

“I got a text message saying my Album was #3 on the charts then talked to my lil brother and found out my pops passed away out of nowhere and my shit went #1 on the charts out of nowhere,” he said in the caption of an Instagram post. “My biggest loss and my biggest win at the same time. Errthang they love about me I learned from you.” He also spoke in an October 2019 appearance on The Breakfast Club about the conflicting feelings he had as he embarked on a successful tour while dealing with his father’s death. “Just came on the tour bus, but I’m typing obituaries and sh*t,” he said. “I’m doing all this while I’m breaking through on tour, rocking sold-out shows.”

Pete Buttigieg explained why he keeps going on Fox News and it’s just so wholesome

If you’ve been online much the past few weeks, you may have seen a bunch of viral clips of Pete Puttigieg on Fox News. The former mayor and Democratic primary candidate has become a regular fixture on the conservative-leaning media outlet, gaining quite the reputation for his bold eloquence and laser-sharp responses.

There’s no question why Fox News keeps having him back—theviral clips that Buttigieg keeps producing are ratings gold for them. But why does Mayor Pete keep agreeing to step into hostile territory?

Ana Navarro spoke to Buttigieg on The View and pointed out his willingness to make appearances in places where Democrats aren’t heard from much, including Fox News. “You never waver from your calm delivery of the facts,” Navarro pointed out. “Why do you keep going on there and how do you stay so unflappable?”

“So here’s the way I think of it. Most of the viewers of Fox News don’t agree with me politically, and definitely the people kind of controlling the content on that network, in my view, aren’t always being fair,” said Buttigieg. “But I also know this. I can’t blame somebody for not supporting my perspective if they’ve literally never heard it. So it’s my job to get that view in front of viewers who are tuning in in good faith.”

Turning to the light in all this darkness, Buttigieg added, “One of the good things coming out of our very troubled political moment, is that I think a lot of people are questioning old habits, including a lot of Republicans who are saying, ‘Okay, I’ve voted Republican all my life, but this is not what I had in mind.’ And now that we have this moment, this president, who has really offended conservative values as well as progressive values—really American values. I think that gives us a moment to build a different kind of coalition.”

Whoa Pete. You mean we don’t have to put everyone into two very distinct boxes that oppose one another no matter what and call one another evil? Where did you come up with such a notion?

He went on to describe how jazzed he is about the idea of getting people from across the political spectrum “on the same page” on big issues that impact us all.

“And I’m so excited about what could happen if we get some Republicans alongside independents and progressives and moderates in my own party and get us on the same page about some things,” he said. “the big issues, whether we’re talking about the climate or racial justice—certainly something like the pandemic. You know, the pandemic doesn’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican. The virus isn’t going to check your party registration. It is a threat to all of us, so we’ve got to build some common ground here. And to me, finding common ground doesn’t mean watering down your values or pretending to be something that you’re not. It just means taking other people seriously and sharing why you care so much.”

Seriously, I’m not sure if we even deserve Pete Buttigieg right now. But in a political climate marked by alternative facts and toxic partisanship, it’s refreshing to have someone who is not only willing to engage with people who disagree with him, but serves as an example of how to do so.

Thanks, Mayor Pete.

Denzel Curry Refuses To Work With Travis Scott Over His ‘Funky’ Attitude

It’s been more than a year since we received a new album from Denzel Curry. The Florida native has kept fans satisfied with singles recently, however, with his last one being October’s “Live From The Abyss.” While fans will certainly have to wait for a future project from Curry, they were given the chance to speak with the rapper as he hopped on Twitter for a Q&A session. From the group of questions he answered, the one that is getting the most attention has to do with Travis Scott.

A fan asked Curry, “Would you ever work with Travis Scott?” and in response, he said, “His attitude funky.” The Florida rapper’s tweet received mixed reactions from fans, pushing one to bring up the guest appearance Curry was rumored to make on Travis’ Astroworld project. “He was supposed to be on a song on astro,” the fan said on Twitter. Once again, he replied and said that he was not slated to appear on the album and that the rumor is rooted in a mistake that an Astroworld producer made. “Not true the producer just sent the same beat not knowing who was going use it coincidentally we both had it.”

Elsewhere in the Q&A, Curry revealed that a collaboration he had with ASAP Rocky fell through because the “Praise Da Lord” rapper was not happy that Curry and fellow Florida rapper Smokepurpp were on good terms. He also said his favorite producer is Flying Lotus and that he would work with Kendrick Lamar if given the chance.

Marco Rubio Is Being Dragged After Botching A Meme About A Republican ‘Wave’

Few Republican operatives know how to step in it as reliably as Marco Rubio. The Florida Senator embarrasses himself on the regular, usually on Twitter, where he can always be counted on to court humiliation. A day after earning the wrath of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rubio was at it again, spending the early hours of Election Night getting dunked on for using exactly the wrong gif you’d want to use when talking about a Republican surge.

Like many in the GOP, Rubio has stayed steadfast by Trump’s side through thick and thin. Also like many in the GOP, he does so despite the fact that Trump repeatedly treated him like crap, in his case while they were running for president during the 2016 campaign. Rubio kept his enthusiasm brief. “In 2016 Republicans ended with a 0.6% turnout advantage in #Florida,” the Senator wrote, “Just wait until you see what it is this time.” That prediction may not be far off in red-heavy Florida, and attached to it was, of course, an illustrating gif, namely of a giant tidal wave. Only problem? Waves are blue. Which is to say waves are Democrats.

Luckily for him, people on Twitter were happy to let him know about his mistake.

Others reminded everyone of some of Rubio’s other Twitter blunders, like that time he honored the late John Lewis with a photo of the also late Elijah Cummings.

Others pointed out that he’s more prone to gaffes than the president.

And some decided to use the occasion to simply tell him where to go.

One person reminded us that Rubio is up for re-election in two years.
