Blue Ivy Narrates The Audiobook Version Of Matthew Cherry’s ‘Hair Love’

Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter is adding another credit to her name at just eight years old. However, unlike her appearances on “Glory” and “Brown Skin Girl,” she’s using her voice in a different way on the audiobook to former NFL player Matthew A. Cherry’s Oscar Hair Love. Blue narrates the popular children’s book, which details a father’s struggle to style his young daughter’s hair. Cherry wrote the book as an adaptation of his Oscar-winning 2019 short film by the same name which was shown ahead of The Angry Birds Movie 2. Earlier this year, HBO Max ordered a 12-episode animated series based on the short.

Given her parents, Blue Ivy was considered “the most famous baby in the world” at her birth, with Jay-Z incorporating her baby noises — gurgling and crying — into his single “Glory” celebrating her birth. More recently, Beyonce featured her daughter on the 2019 single “Brown Skin Girl,” as well as the music video and many of her other videos such as “Formation,” “Bigger,” and “My Power.” Blue has numerous cameos in Beyonce’s Black Is King film and in Jay-Z’s “Family Feud” video in 2017.

Fans were naturally excited about the news, sharing exuberant reactions in response and ensuring that Blue’s latest will be another big hit. Check out Hair Love on Audible.

Someone Is Trying To Sell The McDonald’s Travis Scott Toy For Over $50K

We all knew this was going to happen — the only mystery was the price tag. The Travis Scott action figure from his month-long collaboration with McDonald’s has finally appeared on StockX and now we know, folks believe the limited-edition toy (only five were given away via Twitter sweepstakes!) is worth no less than $55,000. However, whoever actually won the toy may have set their sights a bit high; the current leading bid is less than 10% of the asking price, at just $4,050 as of press time. It’s still all profit though; that’s a PlayStation 5 for Christmas for every member of a nuclear family.

StockX via XXL

The action figure was the culmination of a four-week rollout of Travis’ collaborative merch with McDonald’s. Each week, a new drop of Cactus Jack and golden arches-branded apparel and bric-a-brac appeared on Travis’ website, selling out completely within a couple of days. Travis’ meal at McDonald’s — a special incorporating a custom Quarter Pounder, Sprite, and barbecue sauce — was a smashing success, offsetting a pandemic-driven dip in sales. It was so successful that McDonald’s looked to repeat its feat with another entertainer: Colombian Reggaeton star J Balvin.

The Travis Scott figure was used in the commercial advertising the special and was only available for fans who quote-tweeted the entry post. Travis himself has gone on to partner with more creative partners such as PlayStation and Fortnite.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Nicki Minaj re-team with a beloved collaborator and The Weeknd hop on an international remix. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

Mike Will Made-It — “What That Speed Bout?!” Feat. Nicki Minaj and Youngboy Never Broke Again

Fresh off the announcement that he signed with Atlantic and has a new album, Michael, on the way next year, Mike Will Made-It kicked off his new label relationship with “What That Speed Bout?!.” Mike got Nicki Minaj on the track (along with Youngboy Never Broke Again), and Mike and Minaj have a history of hitting when they collab, which is true here as well.

Maluma — “Hawái (Remix)” Feat. The Weeknd

Maluma’s “Hawái” was a Latin hit this summer, but now he has given it new life for fall by recruiting The Weeknd for a remix. Further more, it’s also the first time Weeknd fans get the chance to hear him sing in Spanish.

2 Chainz — “Quarantine Thick” Feat. Mulatto

Lifestyles around the world have become more sedentary thanks to the pandemic, and 2 Chainz and Mulatto find beauty in that on their new collaboration, “Quarantine Thick.” 2 Chainz celebrates the excess pounds of the lady in his life, saying on the chorus, “She been quarantine, now lil’ shawty thick / She been quarantine, now lil’ shawty hips wider.”

Nav and Wheezy — Emergency Tsunami

Nav has been a consistent force over the past few years, dropping at least a project annually since 2017. He already released his third album, Good Intentions, back in May, but now he has returned (with Wheezy) in tow for a new mixtape, Emergency Tsunami.

24kGoldn — “Mood (Remix)” Feat. Justin Bieber and J Balvin

It’s been a huge year for both 24kGoldn and Justin Bieber, as each artist has spent time at No. 1 thanks to collaborations. Now they have come together (along with another regular chart presence, J Balvin) to continue the legacy of 24kGoldn’s first chart-topper, “Mood.”

Miley Cyrus — “Edge Of Midnight” Feat. Stevie Nicks

Miley Cyrus’ “Midnight Sky” borrows from Stevie Nicks’ “Edge Of Seventeen,” which Cyrus has been forthcoming about. Now, those two worlds have truly mended on a clever new remix titled “Edge Of Midnight,” which blends elements of both songs in a natural-sounding way.

Benee — “Happen To Me”

Benee’s latest references her mental health journey, which she recently told Uproxx is a theme on her upcoming album: “I think with this album, I haven’t really held back on experimenting with genres and even lyrics. Maybe I would have been more hesitant to do some of the things that I’ve done on this album in my previous bodies of work.”

Darkside — Psychic Live July 17 2017

For a quick spell a few years back, Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington teamed up as Darkside, and given the pair’s talent, their sole album together was beloved. Now, they have taken a trod down memory lane by unearthing a previously unheard live set and sharing it as a new EP.

Swae Lee, Tyga, and Lil Mosey — “Krabby Step”

The SpongeBob SquarePants franchise has a more impressive musical history than some may realize, and now a trio of modern favorites have joined the storied universe with “Krabby Step.” The track (from Swae Lee, Tyga, and Lil Mosey) comes from the upcoming film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run, and it transforms some of the show’s classic music and moments into a genuine banger.

St. Vincent — “Piggy”

Nine Inch Nails just got inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and to celebrate, St. Vincent decided to cover “Piggy.” Calling the track one of her NIN favorites, Annie Clark said of it, “When I took this song apart to cover it, it took me a long time to really understand the immensity of the groove. It’s a dark, industrial reggae. Muscular, but never as distorted as you imagined it when you think of it in your head. […] They made a complicated thing seem easy and made big, bold sonic choices.”

Jon Hamm Has A Rave Review Of Tom Cruise’s Enthused Behavior On The ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Set

Jon Hamm is opening up about the surreal experience of filming Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise, and he has nothing but positive things to say about working with the biggest movie star on the planet. While talking about surviving quarantine life with Men’s Health, the Mad Men actor raved about Cruise’s professionalism and now it trickles down to the whole set.

“He is 100 percent movie star and 100 percent a leader,” Hamm said. “On Mad Men, I learned that if the person at the top of the food chain behaves in a certain way, then that’s how the rest of the folks are going to behave. Tom’s always ready. He’s already prepared. He’s always on time. He’s got 900 things going on that you don’t even know about.”

Hamm also got the chance to ask Cruise what it was like returning to the world of Top Gun after all of these years, and the Maverick actor was pumped as always.

You could tell that he was having the time of his life, and that enthusiasm completely washed over the rest of the cast. My first day on set, I said to Tom, “This has to be just surreal for you. Like you’re literally in the same hangar, 30 years later. In nearly the same costume. What’s that like?” And he goes, “Man, it’s unreal. How cool is this?”

As for Hamm’s role in the film, he was a little more coy, but it sounds like he’ll be butting heads with Cruise’s hot-shot pilot. “He’s air boss of the fighter wing. He has a lot of authority and responsibility. When that rubs up against Maverick, there’s friction, as you would guess. I provide the friction.”

‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Continues To Be A King-Sized Hit For Netflix

Today’s Netflix top-10 is the usual mishmash of random movies (Knock Knock, The Impossible, Mile 22), holiday specials (Operation Christmas Drop, Holidate), acquired titles (Chappelle’s Show, minus one episode), and inexplicably popular children’s entertainment (Cocomelon). In fact, there’s only one Netflix original series on the list, and it’s one of the streamer’s biggest (and best) programs of the year: The Queen’s Gambit.

The Queen’s Gambit has been #1 on the top 10 nearly every day since it was released on October 23, due to glowing reviews from critics, positive word of mouth from subscribers, and Anya Taylor-Joy (who we recently spoke to) staring into your soul.

Also, Benny’s hat. It’s mostly because of the hat.

“The limited series has become one of Netflix’s biggest success stories of the year, and that’s saying something considering how quarantine has increased Netflix viewership,” Forbes reports. “Queen’s Gambit may not be producing any Tiger King-level memes, but it sure seems like more people have probably watched the adventures of Beth Harmon than Joe Exotic.” Tiger King was reportedly watched by 34 million users within its first 10 days of release, so that’s mighty impressive. Netflix’s tranquility has been refurbished.

The real Queen’s Gambit was the viewership records we set along the way.

Alex Trebek Made ‘Jeopardy!’ Great Because He Wanted All Of Us To Find The Answers

In a devastating year that’s taken so much from so many, 2020 barreled forward on Sunday by taking Alex Trebek from Jeopardy! fans, too. Trebek died after a long and very public battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer, and by the time a ball drop ends this wretched period, Trebek will be gone from our screens and the Jeopardy! soundstage for good.

Few fans can even remember a Jeopardy! without Trebek, and since his cancer diagnosis in 2019 the very real possibly of his retirement or worse was on the minds of fans, especially when the coronavirus pandemic shut down production this spring. The show’s safety-focused return to production this summer brought new episodes in the fall, which will now show us the last moments we have of Trebek until the backlog of taped episodes with him at the helm run out on Christmas Day.

Tributes will come from many, as will an announcement about his eventual replacement hosting a show with which he became synonymous. It will be difficult and sad, like most things have been this year, and eventually Trebek’s death will settle in with all the heartbreak and sorrow we’ve accumulated in the months after Ken Jennings won the Greatest Of All Time Tournament on primetime in January. Trebek and Jeopardy! meant so much to so many, and even days before his death touching tributes to the show’s host were going viral. Everyone seems to have a personal Jeopardy! story, and nearly every one of those involves Trebek in some way.

“There’s this continuity where it doesn’t feel like a TV property anymore. It’s just a part of America, almost like the national parks or something. It’s really an institution,” legendary Jeopardy! contestant Ken Jennings told me by phone earlier in the month, before Trebek’s death. “It’s just a fabric of all of our lives. It’s Biography now, we feel like it’s part of us.”

Untangling Trebek from that institution will be painful. The aura he projected as host was truly that of someone who knew all the answers, and it was one he worked hard to perfect behind the scenes, putting in the time to learn proper pronunciations and making notes on clues and categories. As our Brian Grubb put it earlier this year, Trebek is the true Jeopardy! GOAT, and this January’s tournament served as much a celebration of Jennings, James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter as it was the show’s legendary host and the personality he showed over the years.

Oftentimes the moments from Jeopardy! that proved most popular were about Trebek himself, not the contestants. People loved seeing him poke fun at contestants who had weird interests or used what may be their only ever appearance on syndicated television to share a startlingly mundane story about themselves. In the hours after his death became public, people flooded social media with memories of Trebek on the show, reciting Cardi B lyrics or saying the word “bitchin.” Another popular video was one of Trebek poking fun at a woman who admitted she liked nerdcore hip hop, only to get roasted by Trebek for defining the genre.

“It’s people who identify as nerdy, rapping about the things they love,” the contestant, Rebecca, said. “Video games, science fiction. Having a hard time meeting romantic partners. You know, it’s really catchy and fun.”

Trebek paused for a moment, then delivered some of the trademark dry humor fans have loved seeing over the years.

“Losers, in other words,” Trebek offered before moving on to the other two contestants and their biographical information.

The clip has gone viral online several times over, to the point that every few months people share it assuming it’s new and further replicating its enduring popularity. The video is a moment that in many ways fits our current cultural climate and the oftentimes outright hostility with which we treat strangers. But though I’ve never met or even interviewed Alex Trebek, I don’t think he was trying to roast this poor woman who likes nerdcore, nor do I think he would want that moment to be his lasting legacy in pop culture. Trebek had jokes, sure, but unlike those of us who watch the show very rarely did put others down for his own gain.

Part of the fun of watching Jeopardy! is, of course, playing along at home. It’s always nice to beat contestants to an answer, something you know that those who actually passed the test to make it on the show did not. For many that edge often comes in sports categories, as even the most learned intellectual simply doesn’t give a sh*t about football enough to know what offside is. One of those famous instances was one of the first Jeopardy! things I wrote about at Uproxx: Trebek somewhat chiding contestants for whiffing on an entire category of very basic football questions.

It’s another moment that often recirculates online, and did once again on Sunday. But that video is not the end of that story: in March of this year, days before the pandemic locked down an entire country, Jeopardy! ran another football category. This time it was written by Trebek himself, complete with crude drawings he made to illustrate the signals a football referee makes. He also acted them out at the podium, much to the amusement of the studio audience and social media. Contestants did much better this time, in part thanks to Trebek’s pantomime and coaching, and he seemed downright chuffed by the results.

Of all the Jeopardy! moments Trebek has given us over the years, I think this is what will stay with me most. More than anything, Trebek always seemed to be on each contestant’s side. There were no favorites, there was no malice or disdain. The judges were to blame for a scoring correction here and there. And while he couldn’t help but poke fun in certain moments, he always wanted players to answer correctly. He didn’t want clues left on the board, because the people behind the scenes worked hard on those clues and, hey, it’s not his money the show is giving away. Everyone gets a payday and a picture, no exceptions.

In a social landscape where too often kindness and compassion are confused for weakness, Trebek was rooting for everyone. The joy through which he worked will endure, both in those who work on the show and contestants who appear on its stage and think the same way he always seemed to think. His genuine sense of wonder and interest in those who adored the show and his work was on display to the very end. The latest viral moment from Trebek was not him dunking on a nerdcore enthusiast, but thrilled by a contestant beatboxing to the point where the Jeopardy! host nearly joined in. It was a moment of growth, maybe, of letting people just enjoy the things they enjoy and appreciating them for wanting to play a role in the world Trebek helped create.

Alex Trebek made Jeopardy! great because he wanted everyone to win, both at the podium with signaling devices and those playing with ballpoint pens in hand at home. When I will think about Jeopardy! in whatever form it takes after Trebek leaves our screens, I hope the same sense of hope and earnest positivity remains. None of us have all the answers, not even Alex Trebek. He will not have taken any particular secrets with him when he passed. What he showed in his 80 years, though, is that no matter what the category our instincts should lean toward compassion, and the answer should always be the desire to get a little bit better every time.

King Von Earns His Highest Debut On The ‘Billboard’ 200 Chart Following His Death

Last week, rising Chicago rapper King Von died after he was shot at an Atlanta nightclub. The artist’s passing came just a week after he released his latest project, Welcome To O’Block, which has now earned him the highest chart debut of his career.

On the Billboard 200 chart dated November 14, Welcome To O’Block makes its inaugural appearance just outside the top 10, at No. 13. This is the best placement Von has ever had on the chart. His 2019 project Grandson, Vol. 1 peaked at No. 75, while his other release from this year, Levon James, topped out at No. 63.

Once Von’s hip-hop peers heard of his passing, there was an outpouring of public mourning. Lil Durk, one of his closest friends, shared a heartbroken message, writing, “MY TWIN GONE. I LOVE YOU BABY BRO – D ROY.” Plenty of other rappers chimed in as well.

Meanwhile, Von’s alleged murdered, 22-year-old Timothy Leeks, was arrested not long after the shooting and is now facing a felony murder charge. An Atlanta Police Department representative said prior to the arrest, “It is our understanding Dayvon Bennett, aka King Von, was shot and killed during this morning’s shooting and we are seeing rumors being spread indicating he was shot and killed by APD officers. At this time, our investigators believe Mr. Bennett was shot during the initial shootout between the two groups of males, prior to police responding and attempting to stop the shooting. Additionally, Mr. Bennett was not located at the scene, but arrived at a hospital shortly after the shooting, via private vehicle.”

Jack Harlow And Russ’ Crews Got Into A Fight At A Celebrity Basketball Game

When it comes to rappers who actually live the rough-and-tumble lives they rhyme about, Russ would be a surprising contender for the top of the list. The New Jersey-born, Atlanta-based indie artist advocate gets in a shocking number of skirmishes, both online and in real life. His latest, with which he says he wasn’t involved but which he was indirectly responsible for, took place at a celebrity basketball game over the weekend where his Diemon crew mixed it up with Jack Harlow’s Private Garden collective.

The two rappers were participants in a basketball tournament featuring fellow rappers G Herbo, Lil Keed, Swae Lee, and more. During their face-off, Harlow went to block a layup, giving a hard foul to the shooter and prompting both teams to clear their respective benches in a scrum that lasted several seconds, but thankfully didn’t escalate into anything worse than a few hard shoves. The scuffle was broken up and play presumably resumed shortly, with HipHopDX reporting Russ’ victory over Harlow’s squad, 22-9. Russ hit the game-winning shot (Swae Lee’s Firefighters defeated Team Diemon in the championship on Swae’s Curry-esque halfcourt shot).

Jack may still have the advantage in their shared day job, though. His single “What’s Poppin” turned out to be his breakthrough hit, climbing all the way to No. 2 on the Hot 100 thanks to its star-studded remix featuring DaBaby and Lil Wayne, while he scored a priority feature appearance on Saweetie’s posse cut remix of her won massive hit “Tap In.” He also secured a spot on the coveted XXL Freshman class and prime placement in BET’s 2020 Hip-Hop Awards Cypher alongside Rapsody and fellow breakouts Chika, Flawless Real Talk, and Polo G. Recently, his new single “Tyler Herro” saw him living out his hoop dreams with the burgeoning NBA star.

Meanwhile, Russ has been mostly less antagonistic of late (although his feud with Guapdad 4000 seems to be ongoing), as he gave away $20,000 on Twitter to help lift fans’ spirits, expanded his list of connections on the deluxe version of Shake The Snow Globe, and made a lovey-dovey connection with Kehlani that should soften his prickly image.

The ‘Fargo’ Frozen Five: The Long-Simmering Feud Finally Starts Boiling

The Fargo Frozen Five is Uproxx’s weekly collection of thoughts, observations, and goofball screencaps from each new episode of the FX limited series’ fourth season. We do not guarantee that there will be five items every week. There could be four, or six, or a dozen. Who knows? This show doesn’t follow the rules. We shouldn’t have to either.

Episode 8 — “Nadir” (or “Mama Fadda Become-a Nada”)

5, A bloodbath has been in the air for weeks. You could sense it. You could smell it through the television screen, somehow. You knew it was coming even if this is your first go-round with Fargo, a show that always builds toward a bloodbath or two. This time it took place in the train station as Zelmare Roulette and Swanee Capps prepared to board their escape rattler to Philly, the one Loy Cannon had spilled the beans about to U.S. Marshal Mormon Raylan at the end of a really fun scene where the two traded stares and one-liners about the criminal lifestyle. The result of it all was dozens of dead bodies scattered across the floor, two of which belonged to the aforementioned Marshal and one Swanee Capps, both at the hand of Odis Weff, who pumped himself up in the car for about 20 minutes before carrying out what appeared to be the order from Loy Cannon in a classic “settle all family business” move that did not go quite as planned. One part of the problem was a furious Zelmare looking at her deceased lover on the floor and that creepy zombieghost behind Weff and then barreling through him and out the door like a Midwestern college fullback before he could finish the job. We’ll get to the other part of the problem later. For now, we focus on two primary outcomes: One, after a slower, more talky stretch of the season, things appear ready to move from simmer to boil; two, I am a little sad that the first three major characters the show killed off this season — Doctor Senator, Marshal Dick “Deafy” Wickware, and Swanee Capps — represented three of my four favorites on the show. We must protect my large ornery son Gaetano. I’m not ready.

FX

5a. I will say this: If you’re about to kick off a firefight where you’re overmatched and prepared to die, smiling at your adversary, spitting out a lollipop, and smooching your partner in love and crime is a pretty cool way to do it.

4. Quite a week for the Fadda brothers, now reunited and on the same page after a brief sibling spat that involved Gaetano getting tortured by the Cannons with Josto’s blessing and Josto getting heaved through a table and socked in the peeper by Gaetano for that first thing. But that’s in the past. They’re back now, together, leading as two kings, as Gaetano was so impressed with Josto’s willingness to sell him out to acquire power that he started and could not stop making wildlife analogies. (Animals he compared to Josto: Various snakes, chameleon. Animals he compared to himself: Lion, bull.) It was nice. It’s good to see a family come together. Even if that bond is built upon a foundation of subterfuge and violence and telling your enemy you killed his youngest son even though the kid is actually on the run with his Irish mentor and your top hitman is hunting them down. I guess. Strange family, the Faddas.

FX

4a. Not all good news for them, though, as Mama Fadda took a stray bullet in an attempted ambush and joined the Flatulent Papa Fadda in the Great Beyond, much to the dismay of her two now-orphaned boys, especially Gaetano, who appeared on the verge of either screaming into the heavens with enough force to bring on loud claps of thunder or tearing apart the family home with his giant meaty paws. Possibly both. One imagines this will become an issue going forward.

3. Not a great week for Oraetta Mayflower either, on a couple of fronts. The first problem, the less pressing one given the development of the second one, is that Josto dropped both an “I think I love you” and a “by the by, I’m getting married” on her in the span of about 90 seconds, followed by a “slow your roll, toots” when she expressed frustration about it.

FX

None it was particularly ideal, but it was all moved down her list of problems very quickly when she found out that Doctor Harvard survived his dance with the Strychnine Macaroons — extremely plausible character name in a future season — and was moved to a distant hospital that specializes in poisons, which, if he continues to improve, will allow him to reveal both her role in his illness and the existence of the letter that outlined a pattern of similar behavior. The only silver lining in it all, for her, was that she finally put two and two together to realize Ethelrida was behind the letter, which put a brief pause in her plans to flee. It would be fun to look at a flow chart of everyone who wants to kill each other and why this season. Just arrows zigging and zagging in a zillion directions.

3a. I’m no psychology expert but Oraetta’s talk of being a sickly child and her mom doting on her and making her a “special juice” sure did sound like a Munchausen by Proxy situation, which would certainly explain a lot of things, if not everything.

FX

3b. Tricky week for Ethelrida too, as she now has a murderous nurse on her tail and a burgeoning forbidden romance with the horn-tooting son of her family’s tormentors. Real Romeo and Juliet situation cooking here. One assumes these will come up again, too.

2. Big sitdown between the Cannon and Smutny matriarchs this week. The chat was ostensibly centered upon the quote-unquote dead Cannon child and the family’s wishes that the Smutny family funeral home handle the service, which, yes, fine. Let’s do all that, especially if it provides a way for the Smutnys to settle some or all of their debt. But the main takeaway of their conversation, for me, was that the “we’re not so different, you and I” vibes were through the roof. Two women with husbands who appear to be the breadwinners, who are strong like iron behind the scenes, pulling literal and figurative shotguns on anyone who threatens their cubs. You get the feeling the two of them could run all of Kansas City if they so desired. It was a good scene. My only small complaint is that neither of them actually said “we’re not so different.” I would have hooted and hollered a little.

1. Luckily, this happened at another point in the episode.

FX

Once I got past the “HE SAID THE THING, THE TITLE OF THE… HE SAID THE THING” of it all (30-40 minutes, tops), I was able to put it all together again. It goes like this:

  • The guns he stole from the Faddas in the flaming truck heist got sold to Mort Zuckerman in Fargo in exchange for a favor and/or loyalty
  • That favor appears to have been “ambush the Faddas and kill them without it getting tied back to me”
  • The first part failed and the second part doesn’t look too great, as no one else had a super great reason to come in guns blazing on the family in that moment
  • Mort Zuckerman, as we know from Season 2, gets assassinated in a movie theater by the Gerhardt family in 1951, which is not long after the events we saw depicted here
  • It’s worth noting that the ties to the universe of Season Two are undeniable in a few ways now, which, given the ending of the events depicted there, leaves open the possibility that this all ends with an alien attack, too

I desperately want to see how Gaetano would react to aliens. I bet his eyes would bug right out of his face like a cartoon character would just saw a pretty lady.
