A Beginner’s Guide To Cristalino, Everyone’s Current Tequila Obsession

If you frequent alcohol-centered message boards, Facebook groups, or even this very booze-heavy website, you might’ve seen mention of a “new” expression of tequila that is quickly gaining popularity in the states known as “Cristalino.” In truth, cristalino — which is a form of aged tequila that is further filtered to remove its golden color (with some flavor loss along the way) — has been popular in the Mexican spirits space for close to a decade now, ever since Don Julio launched the 70th-anniversary bottle Don Julio 70 in 2012. That expression was a first-of-its-kind filtered añejo dubbed an “añejo claro,” a designation that has since morphed into “cristalino,” according to Forbes.

If you’re a seasoned spirits sipper (especially if you love barrel-aged expressions), you might be wondering why in the hell anyone would want to filter añejo tequila to remove anything, let alone the beautiful amber hues and woody flavors that time spent in barrels imparts. That’s a fair point, shared by many a tequila connoisseur. It’s worth noting that cristalinos are not officially recognized by the Tequila Regulatory Council as an official category like your blancos, reposados, or traditional añejos — though the council does now have guidelines and standards in regards to filtered, aged tequilas. Also, some cristalinos actually add back flavor through agave syrup or other sweeteners, outing the style as not meant for true aficionados.

Does this mean, cristalino is just a catchy cash-grab and ought to be ignored?

Not exactly. They’re simply created for a certain type of drinker — newcomers who want a tequila with its harsh edges sanded down by both barrelling and a second filtration (many of these expressions are also bottled at a lower proof than their añejo counterparts). Speaking personally, I’ve enjoyed the silky smoothness of many of the cristalinos I’ve tasted. These are easily sippable expressions, perfect for someone just getting into taking tequila straight. They’re not going to be as vegetal as blancos, nor will they be as oaky-spicy as añejos. Instead, they exist as something of a tweener and, if you have the means and don’t crave a ton of agave taste, they make some beautiful margaritas.

Here are five picks (with tasting notes) for anyone looking for a bottle of cristalino to add to their bar cart.

1800 Cristalino

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Casa Cuervo
Average Price: $54.99

The Tequila:

Launched this year, 1800’s cristalino is first aged in American and French Oak barrels for 16 months before being finished in port wine casks for half a year and finally filtered into its cristalino state. The bottle design is the label’s simplest, featuring a crystalline bottle that glitters as light passes through it.

Tasting Notes:

You’re greeted with warm notes of roasted agave, vanilla, and white chocolate. On the palate, the 1800 has a subtle fruity lift with flavors of cherry emeging before making way to a round vanilla-caramel finish with almost no lingering burn.

Bottom Line:

At almost $60 a bottle, 1800 Cristalino can’t be described as “cheap” or “budget-friendly,” but the bottle makes a great special occasion toasting tequila (for non-hardcore tequila drinkers) and plays nice slow sipped over rocks.

Herradura Ultra

ABV: 35-39%
Distillery: Brown Forman Tequila
Average Price: $42.99

The Tequila:

Herradura Ultra is made using blue weber agave hand-harvested by jimadores in the volcanic lowland regions of the Amatitián. The agave hearts are then roasted in traditional ovens for 26 hours and the distillate is barrel-aged in American White Oak for up to 49 months before being filtered. Why Herradura chooses to call this expression “Ultra” rather than Cristalino, we can’t say, but make no mistake — this is a cristalino.

Tasting Notes:

Subtle hints of sweet nectar and fresh coconut give way to a rich vanilla and honey finish that is greatly enhanced served over rock. Sipping straight will give you less of the expression’s brighter notes and more of the honeyed smoothness — we say open it up a little.

Bottom Line:

Herradura makes hands down one of the easiest drinking cristalinos on this list. In 2020 the brand scooped up several awards across the spirit tasting competitions, making it a great bottle to start with for first-time cristalino drinkers.

Hornitos Cristalino

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Tequila Sauza
Average Price: $29.99

The Tequila:

Made using triple-distilled añejo, Hornitos’ new cristalino expression is aged in American White oak casks before being carbon-filtered into a crystal clear state, delivering all the warmth and velvety tannins of an aged tequila with an ultra-smooth mouthfeel.

Tasting Notes:

Hornitos’ Cristalino has more intense flavors than the other tequilas on this list but still provides that silky vanilla finish that is so characteristic of cristalinos — with notes of sweet honey and some subtly bitter butterscotch that lingers on the palate between sips.

Bottom Line:

At just $30 a bottle, Hornitos Cristalino is a much more comfortable blind bottle buy without sacrificing the craft and luxury bottle design that comes standard with higher-priced bottles.

Penta Diamante Cristalino

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Casa Tequilera de Arandas
Average Price: $100

The Tequila:

Unlike the rest of the cristalinos on this list, Penta Diamante uses a reposado tequila and filters it through charcoal into a cristalino state (rather than an añejo). This expression looks very high-end vodka-ish in presentation and drinks that way too — ultra clean and smooth.

Tasting Notes:

Bursting with flavor, this vanilla forward expression has complex notes of caramel with a creamy-coffee middle that is finished by a bright citrus bite that fades pleasingly from the palate.

Bottom Line:

While Penta Diamante can be seen as a bit of an anomaly on this list since its the only Cristalino made from Reposado rather than Añejo tequila, it shows just how flexible and versatile the category of Cristalino can be and allows you to enjoy the spirit in a cocktail. If you can afford to make a cocktail with a $100 bottle of tequila, Penta Diamante is the way to go, it’ll transform your kitchen margarita into something that feels made for a VIP.

Don Julio 70

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Tequila Don Julio
Average Price: $54.99

The Tequila:

Closing out our list is the bottle that started it all, Don Julio 70. This expression is made with Don Julio’s añejo tequila which is aged for 18 months in oak barrels before being charcoal filtered — resulting in perhaps the smoothest expression out of the entire Don Julio core line.

Tasting Notes:

The intoxicating aroma of slow-roasted agave greets once you pop the cork on a bottle, making way for a vanilla forward expression with a supremely silky caramel, pepper, and oak finish.

Bottom Line:

If you’ve reached the end of this list unsure of which bottle is worthy of your first pick, you really can’t go wrong grabbing Don Julio 70. It is the bottle that started the cristalino craze to begin with.

Facebook Will Indefinitely Ban Political Ads (But Not Until After The Election)

Facebook has been criticized for many things, but one complaint that’s stuck above most of them is this: They’ve allowed a hotbed of disinformation about elections to fester, to the consternation of many. But now they’re springing into action. According to The New York Times, it’s going to indefinitely prohibit “all political and issue-based advertising,” in an attempt to take “more preventive measures to keep political candidates from using it to manipulate the election’s outcome and its aftermath.” One catch? The ban won’t go into place until Nov. 4, the day after the national election.

Facebook came under fire after it was revealed Russian operatives had used the service to spread disinformation during the 2016 election, perhaps even helping swing it Trump’s way. Since then co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg says he’s spent billions of dollars — more than the $5.1 billion they made in their first year as a private company, in 2012 — to “hire new employees for the company’s ‘integrity’ and security divisions, who identify and clamp down on interference.”

But it doesn’t appear they’re seeing much in the way of results, as per the Times:

Yet how successful the efforts have been are questionable. The company continues to find and take down foreign interference campaigns, including three Russian disinformation networks as recently as two weeks ago.

Domestic misinformation has also mushroomed, as Facebook has said it will not police speech from politicians and other leading figures for truthfulness. Mr. Zuckerberg, who supports unfettered speech, has not wavered from that position as Mr. Trump has posted falsehoods and misleading comments on the site.

Facebook has long resisted outright banning political ads, even after being called on by many to do so, making the ban a surprise, even if it won’t go into effect immediately. One thing they’ll be doing now is removing posts that call on people to engage in poll watching, namely “when those calls use militarized language or suggest that the goal is to intimidate, exert control, or display power over election officials or voters.” Trump himself at the first presidential debate asked his supporters to engage in poll watching, though he didn’t go into specifics. They’ve already been removing posts, some 120,000 of them, that have violated its policies on voter interference.

They’ll even go after You Know Who. “I want to underscore that we remove this content regardless of who posts it,” said Monica Bickert, the company’s head of global policy management. “That includes the president.”

The news comes one day after they went after another problem with their site, removing any group, page, and Instagram account that identified with the pro-Trump conspiracy movement QAnon. That, too, was something that was allowed to grow and fester over the years, with little regulation from Facebook top brass.

The Lakers Will Wear Their Mamba Jerseys During Game 5 Of The NBA Finals

The Los Angeles Lakers are making a change ahead of Game 5 of the NBA Finals. No, they won’t be making any adjustments to their lineup or rotation (as far as we know, at least), but according to a report, the team is making a sartorial switch with the Larry O’Brien trophy on the line.

According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, the Lakers have decided to make a jersey swap for Game 5, opting to wear their black and yellow Mamba jerseys. The team had previously planned to only wear them during Game 2, which they won 124-114, and in a potential Game 7. But with a title just 48 minutes away, L.A. is going to break out the Mamba jerseys on Friday night.

The significance, of course, is that the jerseys are named after franchise legend Kobe Bryant, who passed away earlier this year in a helicopter crash alongside eight others, including his daughter, Gianna. The Lakers are looking to win their first ring since 2010, when Bryant and Pau Gasol led the team to a grueling seven-game series victory over the Boston Celtics. While these Lakers surely hope they don’t need seven games to get the job done this year, they’ll hope to get the job done in unis inspired by the franchise great. They’ve had a talismanic quality about them all postseason, too: L.A. is 4-0 in their Mamba kits in these playoffs.

The Lakers Defensive Adaptability Continues To Drive Their Championship Run

The Lakers have faced four very different opponents thus far this postseason, but have remained defensively stout against them all, utilizing different lineups and adapting their approach by tailoring a scheme specific to the opponent.

Against the Blazers, Rockets, and Nuggets they saw just about every kind of attack you can think of in the modern NBA, and while they haven’t always been perfect, they’ve been willing to adjust in a way some great defenses aren’t. The Lakers have strong defensive principles, but they aren’t wholly set in their ways in how they do things like pick-and-roll coverages to the point that they become predictable and easily exploited. A big part of this comes from the versatility of their defenders, starting with Anthony Davis and LeBron James, but extending to quality perimeter defenders in Alex Caruso, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and a rejuvenated Rajon Rondo.

In Game 3, Jimmy Butler attacked a weakness in the Lakers gameplan, as they willingly switched every screen and allowed him to hunt favorable matchups. In Game 4, they switched Davis onto Butler at the request of Davis, and early on, Butler went back into matchup hunting mode, as the Lakers would switch every time Bam Adebayo came to set a screen, allowing Butler to pull Dwight Howard to the perimeter and attack him off the dribble.

As the game went on, the Lakers made another adjustment, as they had Davis and anyone else who was tasked with being Butler’s primary defender, to go under screens and not switch them. The result was an 8-for-17 night for Butler, and maybe more importantly, just seven trips to the free throw line after 14 such visits in Game 3, many of which came by attacking lesser defenders. By keeping primary defenders sunken back on Butler, daring him to shoot jump shots, they cut off his driving lanes and didn’t allow him to create the same looks for himself and for others as Game 3. This possession in the early fourth quarter is a great example of Butler trying to get a switch onto Kyle Kuzma. Unlike in Game 3, when LeBron willingly gave him that switch, the Lakers had him go under twice, holding up Jae Crowder before staying with Butler each time to keep that same matchup.

Davis’ impact on Butler was noticeable, as he employed many of the same tactics he did against Russell Westbrook in the Houston series. By sagging back, knowing Butler didn’t want to settle for long jumpers, he made it impossible to get to the rim. His length and quickness allows him to contest Butler when he pulls up from the short mid-range, where he’s very good against smaller defenders.

On top of taking the rim away from Butler, sinking under screens took away passes to Adebayo on the roll. When they force the ball to Tyler Herro, who isn’t nearly the facilitator Butler is on the ball, they also limited Adebayo’s impact while asking the volume-shooting rookie to carry an immense load.

Frank Vogel and the Lakers staff deserve a ton of credit for their willingness to continue adapting their gameplan to counter every punch thrown by their opponent throughout this postseason. Favorites so often have a hubris about them that doesn’t let them make adjustments until it’s too late, but for the Lakers, there isn’t some devotion to a system as much as there is a commitment to the effort and principles they call for. The buy-in on that end, particularly from even their lesser defenders — Kyle Kuzma’s effort on defense this postseason in particular has been notable — is a credit to the staff and to their two stars for leading by example in that area.

Vogel isn’t often discussed among the league’s best coaches, in part because any time you have two elite superstars, there’s an expectation that the coaching job is easier or has a lesser impact. While he’s perfectly happy to let James and Davis get the rightful praise they do, what he’s done this season and especially this postseason with the L.A. defense is nothing short of remarkable. This is a Heat team that dismantled the Bucks defense — admittedly with Goran Dragic exerting immense pressure the Lakers haven’t had to deal with — but like every previous Laker opponent this playoffs, they are finding it tough sledding, particularly in key moments thanks to the Lakers willingness to adapt.

Lifelong Republicans are turning out to vote for Biden, unable to stomach another Trump term

President Trump has always had a fan base that would literally follow him off the edge of a cliff. But he’s also had support from Republicans outside of his base—people who range from diehard fiscal conservatives to one-issue voters to hold-their-nose-and-vote folks who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Hillary.

This election, however, there seems to be a turn of the tide. We’ve seen prominent Republicans who served in previous GOP administrations come out in support of Biden, warning the nation that Trump poses a danger to our democracy. We’ve seen coalitions of Republicans from The Lincoln Project to RVAT (Republican Voters Against Trump) form in the past couple of years. And we’ve even seen people who have served recently in Trump’s own administration encouraging people not to vote for him based on their experiences in the White House and seeing his behavior up close.

It’s historically unprecedented for an incumbent president to lose so many members of their own party, though it’s not surprising to the millions who have always seen Trump for who he is. Now it seems many everyday conservative Americans are recognizing that restoring sanity, stability, and decency to the presidency is the first order of business right now—partisanship be damned.

Twitter users are sharing stories of friends and loved ones who are lifelong Republicans voting for Biden—and even voting for him early.

Some are even voting Democrat all the way down the ticket.

For some, it’s their parents who have made the switch. For others, it’s actually themselves.

Many of the stories are about folks in the older generation, who may have been put off by the president’s cavalier attitude about COVID, which poses the greatest threat to their age group. Or it could be that they are dismayed by how far the dignity of the office has fallen under Trump.

One person shared that her 81-year-old mother understood the “toxic agenda” from the Council for National Policy—a secretive, right-wing policy-pushing group where mainstream conservatives and extremists mix, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The stories seem to be met with a mix of outright glee and cautious optimism, as many people are still hesitant to feel too hopeful after the 2016 election.

But it is heartening to see that even those who are exposed to Fox News aren’t necessarily lost.

For some of these folks, voting for anyone other than a Republican is a big deal, especially when they are surrounded by folks who believe in kooky conspiracy theories. Their willingness to put country over party should be celebrated.

For some, a combination of reading actual news and the influence of younger generations have made the difference.

It’s almost enough to make you think that the polls that have Biden’s already sizable lead growing might have some legs. Almost.

One story was particularly touching. Brennan Suen is an LGBTQ activist who was inspired by AOC to find one person in his life that he could talk sense into in the election. He chose his 94-year-old grandmother who has always voted Republican.

Suen wrote:

“After RBG died, I listened to @AOC say, there is someone in your life who only you can get to in this election, and it is your job to get to them. Since then, I have been filled with anxiety knowing what I needed to do. For me, that’s my 94 year old grandmother.

She has always voted Republican. My very first memory of politics was seeing polls during Gore v. Bush and her telling me she supported Bush but my parents supported Gore. I took one look at the two and said that I agreed with my parents.

After weeks of hesitation, I finally called my grandmother after SCOTUS justices indicated their intent to overturn Obergefell. She has always been the greatest ally — the first thing she said to me when I came out was that she wanted me to have a grandkid for her.

I have never called her crying, but I did today. I told her that in my work, I advocate for my community every day, and the last four years has been unbearably difficult for me. I told her the Republicans are trying to take away our right to marry, adopt, access health care.

I told her a vote for Republicans was a vote that would harm me and my future. I told her I was scared. And today, my grandmother promised me she would vote for Joe Biden and @xjelliott. She told me that I’m the love of her life and that she would not break her promise.

I am still crying. Please call your loved ones. Tell them what’s at stake. Tell them it’s personal. Because it’s true. There is someone out there who only you can get to. And their decision will mean the world to you.”

Some things are just more important than political parties or even policies. As General Michael Hayden, former CIA director under Bush, said in a video ad this week, “I absolutely disagree with some of Biden’s policies, but that’s not important. What’s important is the United States … Biden is a good man. Donald Trump is not.”

Country over party. Decency over degeneracy. Regardless of political identity, it’s time to say enough is enough.

The Controversial ‘Cuties’ Movie On Netflix Has Gotten Into Legal Hot Water In Texas

Early in September, a movie from France caught the ire of rightwing commentators. It was called Mignonnes (or Cuties in America), and it drew outrage for depicting a group of prepubescent girls who get into twerking. The filmmakers said it was a critique of the hypersexualization of underage girls, yet some people claimed it looked like an endorsement. Throughout the controversy, its American distributor, Netflix, has remained steadfast, changing the much-critiqued poster yet declining to remove it from its service. But now they’re in legal hot water in Texas.

According to The New York Times, a grand jury in Tyler County, not far from Houston and home to about 21,600 people, has indicted Netflix for “promoting certain lewd material of children,” according to a statement from the criminal district attorney. The charge was based on a Texas law which makes it illegal to “knowingly promote” content that depicts the genital area of a child, clothed or partially clothed. The content must appeal to “the prurient interest in sex and has no serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.”

The D.A.’s statement said the punishment was a state jail felony, though it’s unclear who exactly will be charged.

In their own statement, Netflix continued to defend the film, as well as themselves. “‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” it read. “This charge is without merit.”

Cuties premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where director Maïmouna Doucouré took home the Directing Award for a dramatic picture. It also holds 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many of the critics who gave it positive reviews were targets of online harassment and death threats.

James Corden mocks Trump’s White House return with Paul McCartney parody: ‘Maybe I’m Immune’

“The Late Late Show” host James Corden took a shot at President Trump’s erratic behavior after his COVID-19 diagnosis with a parody of Paul McCartney’s 1970 hit, “Maybe I’m Amazed” on Tuesday night.

“Maybe I’m Immune” is based on Trump’s statement after returning to the White House from the hospital on Monday night when he wondered, “Maybe I’m immune?”

The song is funny but it also highlights Corden’s beautiful Elton John-esque singing voice and solid piano skills.

The song is intercut with clips of Trump’s doctor, Sean Conley’s questionable attempts to suggest the president was in good health after being diagnosed with a deadly virus. It also features a clip of Trump speculating that the virus could be cured by injecting bleach.

The end of the song touches on the president’s “immunity” to the fact that he’s trailing Joe Biden substantially in the polls. On Monday, a CNN poll came out showing Biden with a 16-point lead among likely voters.

On Wednesday, a Rasmussen poll came out saying that Biden has a 12-point lead over Trump. Rasmussen has traditionally been seen as a conservative-leaning polls.

Lyrics to “Maybe I’m Immune”

Maybe I’m immune ’cause today I’m feeling so alive

Just don’t be afraid of the way I’m breathing

Maybe I’m immune, it’s okay to go out for a ride, with others trapped inside

Maybe you’re immune to the lies my doctors tell you

Maybe I’m a man and maybe I don’t wear a mask because I don’t care about others

Science, I don’t really understand

Maybe I’m a man and maybe I’m just high from this experimental cocktail

Maybe I just need some oxygen

Maybe I’m immune to the ways the polls are looking now

Maybe I’m afraid it’s not fake news

Maybe I’m immune to all the lies that I have made, I shouldn’t have downplayed

Maybe I’m afraid of the way that I might lose this

Maybe on November 3 I just might lose this

“Maybe I’m Amazed” is notable for being Paul McCartney’s first big solo hit after leaving The Beatles in 1970. The song was the second to last track on his first solo album, “McCartney” in which Paul played every instrument alongside vocal contributions from his wife, Linda.

The album has been back in the press recently after rumors that McCartney is looking to release “McCartney III” at the end of the year. It would be the third album in McCartney’s catalog where he plays the instruments by himself. “McCartney II” was released in 1980.

Our dedicated film crew worked hard to bring this to life and we hope you find metaphors in it you can relate to as you listen to the music and watch the film. 21 Savage And Metro Boomin Are Menacing Businessmen In Their Opulent ‘My Dawg’ Video

21 Savage and Metro Boomin continue the rollout for their Savage Mode II with the video for “My Dawg,” which finds the duo showing off in an opulent mansion while finalizing various deals. At the point in the song where 21 references the string of jokes about him technically being British in the wake of his immigration arrest, he’s flanked by literal Redcoats, who take aim at an unseen target on his orders.

The tongue-in-cheek moment is roughened up somewhat by the rest of the video, which borrows imagery from Scarface and similar gangster movies to make Savage and Metro out to be menacing businessmen who mimick both big-money meetings and a hand-to-hand sale in a high school hallway — which is somehow still located within the mansion.

Savage Mode II, the sequel to the duo’s original 2015 collaborative outing, arrived after months of teasing from both, following up Savage’s I Am > I Was and his Grammy win for Best Rap Song for “A Lot,” as well as Metro’s Not All Heroes Wear Capes. They celebrated the release with the video for “Runnin.”

In short, Chris Watts confessed to murdering his family, but he did so in a few different ways, and this film aims to give a voice to the victims of his crimes. Through archival footage, home videos and law enforcement accounts, Poppelwell paints a portrait of a collapsing marriage and the police investigation that followed.
