Hotels We Love: This Sleek & Historic Madrid Hotel Is Just Steps From The Absolute Best Park In The City

Hotels We Love Madrid
Merle Cooper/UPROXX/Emily Hart

Summer is here, and you know what that means: it’s time to start planning a European adventure. The popular spots may be your first instinct—Paris, Venice, and Ibiza—but Madrid is at the top of my list.

Madrid ranked third on Euromonitor’s Top 100 City List, which ranks cities worldwide across 55 metrics (including economic and business performance, health and safety and sustainability, and tourism and infrastructure). After spending a week in the Spanish Capitol city, I can see why.

Seamlessly blending rich history, world-class art, and an infectious zest for life, Madrid is the perfect stop on a Spring or Summer European getaway.

Whether you wander through the historic neighborhoods and majestic palaces, lose yourself in the Golden Triangle of renowned museums (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen-Bornemisza), or savor tapas until the wee hours, Madrid promises an unforgettable experience.

I stayed at the historic Hotel Palacio del Retiro, Autograph Collection, during my visit, which greatly exceeded my expectations. Here is why you should consider it for your next trip to Madrid.

WHY IT’S AWESOME:

Palacio
Emily Hart

Hotel Palacio del Retiro, Autograph Collection, offers a unique and luxurious stay right in the heart of Madrid. Converted from a 20th-century aristocratic residence, it’s different from your typical large-scale hotel with limited rooms and right next to the sprawling and iconic El Retiro Park.

I loved waking up to serene park views and enjoying a morning walk just outside the hotel’s doorstep. While luxurious, I appreciated that the hotel doesn’t feel stuffy or ostentatious while still catering to a more discerning traveler who appreciates historical details and a truly boutique experience. A Spanish National Monument, the hotel retains much of its original charm, although it just reopened after renovations, making this the perfect time to visit.

IN-HOUSE FOOD AND DRINK:

The Suite Bar

The Suite Bar
Emily Hart

The Suite Bar is located within the Hotel Palacio del Retiro and serves Mediterranean dishes all day. I loved popping by the bar for a morning cappuccino and pastries, in the afternoon for a leisurely tapas lunch, and in the evening for a cocktail before dinner.

Palacio del Retiro Room Service
Emily Hart

The Suite Bar also provides 24-hour room service; if you know me, that is a very important part of any luxury stay. The breakfast spread was incredible, with fresh fruits, pastries, coffee, juice, and churros, and the late-night pizza hit the spot.

AMENITIES:

Room Service
Emily Hart
  • Spa
  • Fitness Room
  • Bicycle Rental
  • Laundry
  • 24-hour Room Service
  • Daily Housekeeping
  • Restaurant and bar
  • Meeting Space
  • Bathrobes and Slippers
  • Views of El Retiro Park

ROOM TYPES:

Palacio
Emily Hart

The 50-room boutique hotel is a converted palatial private home built in the early 20th century and has several room types, including:

  • Deluxe King
  • Deluxe Queen
  • Deluxe Twin
  • Premium Deluxe King
  • Premium Deluxe Queen
  • Premium Deluxe Twin
  • Junior Suite King
  • Junior Suite Twin
  • Suite Retiro Park View

Unlike the other rooms, I enjoyed staying in the Presidential Library Suite. The spacious suite has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a seating area, a dining room, and a dividing closet and entertainment area separating the living room from the large bedroom. The bathroom had a large spa soaking tub, and the windows and balcony looked out onto the streets of Madrid and nearby El Retiro Park.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK NEARBY:

Chocolateria San Gines

Churros
Emily Hart

You can’t visit Madrid without a stop at Chocolatería San Ginés —a Madrid institution. Founded in 1894 and famous for its decadent hot chocolate and churros, the chocolaterías is situated right in the heart of Madrid, at Pasadizo de San Ginés, near the Puerta del Sol—the perfect pitstop while exploring the city center. The rich, thick chocolate served alongside fluffy, golden churros is as decadent as they are classic. Chocolate and six churros are around five Euros.

Bar Postas

Bar Postas
Emily Hart

In Madrid, you’ll want a classic “bocadillo de calamares” – a calamari sandwich. I opted for Bar Postas, a traditional and no-frills bar halfway between Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, making it a perfect stop for exploring central Madrid. The crispy bread contrasting with the hot breaded calamari is a unique treat. Sandwiches will run around five Euros.

La Bola

La Bola
Emily Hart

La Bola is another historic Madrid institution (you’ll notice a theme here). It was founded in 1870 and is famous for its savory cocido madrileño (Madrid stew). Family-run for four generations, this is definitely a place one goes for food, but maybe even more for “the experience.” The chickpea and meat stew is prepared and served traditionally, first with a hearty broth and followed by the meat course and vegetables to add to your stew. Expect to pay 30-45 Euros, and reservations are recommended at this popular spot.

Salmon Guru

Salmon Guru
Emily Hart

At UPROXX, we love traveling for the perfect bar, and Salmon Guru might be it. Ranked 16th on The World’s Best Bar List in 2023, the trendy spot serves inventive cocktails in a 1960s speakeasy, manga comic-inspired space. Cocktails range from 12 to 20 Euros.

Circulo Mercantile Restaurant

Circulo Gran Via
Emily Hart

I had a memorable dinner at Circulo Mercantile Restaurant, within Circulo Gran Via, Autograph Collection. The elegant dining room is sophisticated with a contemporary twist – just like the food. With amazing views of the bustling Gran Via Avenue, this is a great spot to dine after exploring the Gran Via area or before heading to sleep at the hotel. The menu emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients, showcasing innovative and modern takes on Spanish classics with plenty of Spanish wine pairings.

WHERE TO EXPLORE NEARBY:

Explore El Retiro Park

El Retiro
Emily Hart

El Retiro Park, or simply El Retiro, is a sprawling urban oasis, one of Madrid’s most cherished landmarks, just across the street from Palacio del Retiro. Initially created in the 17th century for Spain’s King Philip IV, El Retiro served as a place for relaxation and leisure for the monarchy until the park’s gates were opened to the public in the late 19th century. The park boasts a gorgeous and diverse collection of gardens and many sculptures and fountains scattered throughout.

The park’s centerpiece is undoubtedly the iconic Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace), an exquisite example of 19th-century architecture. I spent many mornings and evenings strolling along the tree-lined avenues of the park – and even one morning on a guided “Nordic walking” excursion. On my next visit, I’d love to rent a rowboat on the lake or spend an afternoon sitting at one of the cafes scattered throughout the park with a drink and a book.

See A Flamenco Show At Corral de la Morería

Madrid Flamenco
Emily Hart

A flamenco performance is a must in Spain — and Corral de la Morería is my pick. The renowned venue in Madrid offers a two-in-one experience: Michelin-starred cuisine and a breathtaking flamenco show. Established in 1951, Corral de la Morería is considered the world’s most famous flamenco tablao – intimate performance spaces dedicated to showcasing the flamenco art form.

Flamenco
Emily Hart

Over the years, Corral de la Morería has seen legendary flamenco performers grace its stage, solidifying its reputation as a cultural icon in Madrid. I loved the multi-course meal while watching the intimate and passionate flamenco performance – something I will remember forever. The show is 50-60 Euros, and there are multiple dinner options – the tasting menu is 80 Euros.

Spend A Day At The Museums

Temple
Emily Hart

Madrid is a well-known museum-lover paradise. Home to the “The Golden Triangle of Art,” which encompasses the iconic Museo del Prado, Reina Sofía Art Centre, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, you can spend hours or days admiring the world-class collections from all over the world. General admission tickets for Museo del Prado are 15 Euro, 12 Euro for Reina Sofia Art Centre, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum are 13 Euro. Buy a Paseo del Arte Pass to visit all three for just 32 euros.

BED GAME: 9/10

Madrid Bed
Emily Hart

The bed in my suite was massive, with plenty of pillows, high-end linens, and the outlets and reading lights a picky traveler like me needs. After waking up, I spent every morning sitting in bed with my espresso, sinking into the luxurious surroundings and feeling positively regal.

SEXINESS RATING: 8/10

Palacio del Retiro
Emily Hart

Sexy isn’t the first descriptor I’d use for this hotel – I’d start with historic, sleek, elegant, and refined – but my room, in particular, definitely had a quiet sexiness. The dark library aesthetic was moody, the bedroom was inviting, and the bathroom was large.

VIEWS/PIC SPOTS:

Palacio del Retiro
Emily Hart

The view from my windows and balcony really can’t be beat. Other spots for a shot are the winding historic staircases, courtyard, and, my personal favorite – the gorgeous in-room breakfast spread.

BEST SEASON TO VISIT:

Madrid Street
Emily Hart

Like much of Europe, summer is high season, but it is also very warm, and you’ll find higher rates. I visited in the fall, which was perfect for lower temperatures, crowds, and rates, but spring is also when I’d recommend it.

IF I HAD TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ONE THING:

The historic hotel is a Spanish National Monument, making renovations and changes difficult. That said, the hotel just reopened after completing a months-long renovation. So if I had to complain about one thing—it’s more of a complaint to myself—it’s that I visited just before the renovation and would like to see what changes and upgrades have been made since.

BOOK HERE:

Weekday rates can start at $450 in the shoulder seasons and $650 for a standard room on weekends. Book here.

Megan Thee Stallion Brought The Phoenix Mercury On Stage After Natasha Cloud Cleverly Caught Her Attention

Megan Thee Stallion talked her talk when Charlamagne Tha God claimed (and then retracted) that she was “not an arena artist,” and her Hot Girl Summer Tour speaks for itself. Hot Girl Meg will perform a sold-out show at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Friday, June 21, but first, she brought the Hot Girl Summer Tour to Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Juneteenth.

WNBA guard Natasha Cloud and her Phoenix Mercury teammates, including Brittney Griner, were seated in the pit. Cloud held up her phone toward the stage with her screen reading, “COME TO OUR GAME.” Megan Thee Stallion saw it and her mouth was agape in flattery. “I’m invited to y’all game?” she said into the microphone. “‘Cause I seen y’all video. […] I’m so happy y’all came to the show! Can y’all come up on stage? I wanna see y’all.”

@t__cloud9 on Instagram

Last month, Megan Thee Stallion bonded with Chicago Sky star rookie Angel Reese when the Hot Girl Summer Tour hit the United Center. Similarly, GloRilla welcomed Reese and her Sky teammates on stage, and Megan Thee Stallion twerked on Reese.

There are two more opportunities for Meg to platform the WNBA during the Hot Girl Summer Tour. Let’s hope to see the Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces join her over the weekend.

Megan Thee Stallion is set to release Megan, her third studio album, on June 28, and then her tour will head overseas in July. See all of her remaining dates here.

Report: JJ Redick Agreed To Become The Next Coach Of The Lakers

jj redick top
YouTube/MindTheGame

The Los Angeles Lakers finally have their head coach, and after a winding road they’ve returned to where they started, with ESPN analyst JJ Redick landing the job. The news of Redick’s appointment came via Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Redick, who was floated early on as a frontrunner, had to get through the NBA Finals as a lead analyst in the booth, and in that time the Lakers took a detour chasing UConn head coach Dan Hurley, ultimately getting turned down by the back-to-back national champion. That sent the Lakers back to the drawing board, and Redick returned to the front of the line and, with the Celtics finishing off their Finals win on Monday night, Redick was finally clear to ink a deal to officially become the Lakers head coach.

This is a unique decision by the Lakers, as Redick does not have any head coaching experience. A retired NBA player, Redick decided to go into the world of media after his playing days came to an end, whether that meant podcasting, appearances as a pundit on ESPN, or his appointment to the network’s top broadcast booth alongside Mike Breen and Doris Burke after Doc Rivers left to join the Milwaukee Bucks during this past season.

Perhaps most notably, Redick co-hosts the “Mind the Game” podcast with Lakers star LeBron James. Now, the pair will go from podcast colleagues to professional ones, as Redick will be tasked with leading James and co. to another championship.

‘Survivor’ Favorite Ben Katzman Calls Upon Some Major Indie Firepower For His New Album, ‘Tears On The Beach’

Ben Katzman was a finalist on Season 46 of Survivor, but he actually has a history with underground rock, too, with his own label (BUFU Records) and band (DeGreaser). Now he’s storming back with a new album: Today (June 20), he announced Tears On The Beach and shared the title track.

Katzman says of the song:

“‘Tears On The Beach’ is a song about finding the strength to claw your way out of emotional rock bottom. Whether it’s losing a close friend, or feeling a loss of control in your personal story, ‘Tears’ is ultimately about recognizing that you have control over the spiritual fire within. The song itself features some very close friends old and new who have been part of this crazy journey. The same way Charlie picked me back up in Fiji, the friends who appear on this track picked me back up whenever I was feeling spun out.”

He called on a strong roster of indie rock collaborators to help bring the album to life, including Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin (who was actually his college dorm neighbor once upon a time), Marisa “Missy” Dabice and Kaleen Reading of Mannequin Pussy, and Guerilla Toss.

Listen to “Tears On The Beach” above and check out the album art and tracklist below.

When Will ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Part 2 Return?

Yellowstone
Paramount Network

Those f*cking guys” are back at it again! The final round of Yellowstone episodes are finally on the way after what feels like years of back and forth between former lead Kevin Costner and showrunner Taylor Sheridan.

Production on the final batch of episodes began in May in Montana. Season five part two will premiere on Sunday, November 10th. A video clip teased the “epic return” which comes almost exactly two years since season five began on November 13th, 2022. What does a “season” really mean anymore, after all?

The announcement comes mere hours after Kevin Costner’s lengthy People interview where he expressed his “disappointment” with the Yellowstone crew since his departure and the drama that surrounded his exit. Sources told Deadline that Costner wouldn’t commit to a shooting schedule, which he has denied in the form of in various interviews.

But will Costner appear in the finale? Maybe? Costner says that if we can work it out, he would be open to returning. He told PEOPLE, “It might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family,” he says. “And if that happens, I would step into it if I agreed with how it was being done.” He added, “In the very end, I couldn’t do any more for it than I had already done.”

Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey is waiting to hear something, anything, about his alleged spinoff.

9 astounding photos this mom took to keep herself calm while giving birth.

When San Francisco photographer Lisa Robinson was about to have her second child, she was both excited and nervous.

Sure, those are the feelings most moms-to-be experience before giving birth, but Lisa’s nerves were tied to something different.

She and her husband already had a 9-year-old son but desperately wanted another baby. They spent years trying to get pregnant again, but after countless failed attempts and two miscarriages, they decided to stop trying.

Of course, that’s when Lisa ended up becoming pregnant with her daughter, Anora. Since it was such a miraculous pregnancy, Lisa wanted to do something special to commemorate her daughter’s birth.

So she turned to her craft — photography — as a way to both commemorate the special day, and keep herself calm and focused throughout the birthing process.

Normally, Lisa takes portraits and does wedding photography, so she knew the logistics of being her own birth photographer would be a somewhat precarious new adventure — to say the least.

pregnancy, hospital, giving birth, POV

“After some thought,” she says, “I figured I would try it out and that it could capture some amazing memories for us and our daughter.”

In the end, she says, Alec was supportive and thought it would be great if she could pull it off. Her doctors and nurses were all for Lisa taking pictures, too, especially because it really seemed to help her manage the pain and stress.

In the hospital, she realized it was a lot harder to hold her camera steady than she initially thought it would be.

tocodynamometer, labor, selfies

“Eventually when it was time to push and I was able to take the photos as I was pushing, I focused on my daughter and my husband and not so much the camera,” she says.

“I didn’t know if I was in focus or capturing everything but it was amazing to do.”

The shots she ended up getting speak for themselves:

husbands and wives, intimacy, hospital rooms,

obstetrician, doctors, hospital rooms

nurse, strangers, medical care,

newborn, insurance, patient rights

love, emotion, mental health, community

experiment, images, capture, document, record

“Everybody was supportive and kind of surprised that I was able to capture things throughout. I even remember laughing along with them at one point as I was pushing,” Lisa recalled.

In the end, Lisa was so glad she went through with her experiment. She got incredible pictures — and it actually did make her labor easier.

Would she recommend every mom-to-be document their birth in this way? Absolutely not. What works for one person may not work at all for another.

However, if you do have a hobby that relaxes you, figuring out how to incorporate it into one of the most stressful moments in your life is a pretty good way to keep yourself calm and focused.

Expecting and love the idea of documenting your own birthing process?

Take some advice from Lisa: “Don’t put pressure on yourself to get ‘the shot'” she says, “and enjoy the moment as much as you can.”

Lisa’s mom took this last one.

This glacier was featured on a postcard in 1900. A camera captured where it is today.

116 years ago, the Pasterze glacier in the Austria’s Eastern Alps was postcard perfect:

Snowy peaks. Windswept valleys. Ruddy-cheeked mountain children in lederhosen playing “Edelweiss” on the flugelhorn.

But a lot has changed since 1900.

Much of it has changed for the better! We’ve eradicated smallpox, Hitler is dead, and the song “Billie Jean” exists now.

On the downside, the Earth has gotten a lot hotter. A lot hotter.

The 15 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998. July 2016 was the planet’s hottest month — ever.

Unsurprisingly, man-made climate change has wreaked havoc on the planet’s glaciers — including the Pasterze, which is Austria’s largest.

Just how much havoc are we talking about? Well…

A series of stunning photos, published in August, show just how far the glacier has receded since its heyday.

First measured in 1851, the glacier lost half of its mass between that year and 2008.

A marker placed in 1985 shows where the edge of the glacier reached just 31 years ago. You can still see the ice sheet, but just barely, way off in the distance. In between is … a big, muddy lake.

The view from the glacial foot marker from 1995 — 10 years later — isn’t much more encouraging.

Even in just one year, 2015, the glacier lost an astounding amount of mass — 177 feet, by some estimates.

Ice continues to melt daily, and while the dripping makes for a good photo, it’s unfortunate news for planet Earth. Glacial melting is one of the three primary causes of sea-level rise.

According to a European Environment Agency report, the average temperature in the Alps has increased 2 degrees Celsius in the last 100 years — double the global average.

It’s not unreasonable to assume that that’s why this mountain hut has been abandoned by the flugelhorn-playing children who once probably lived in it.

Is there anything we can do to stop climate change besides look at scary glacier photos?

Climate change is, unfortunately, still a robust debate in the United States as many of our elected officials refuse to acknowledge that we humans are the ones doing the changing. As of last year, that list included a whopping 49 senators. Calling them to gently persuade them otherwise would be helpful. Not voting for them if they don’t change their minds would be even more so.

There is some tentative good news — the Paris Agreement signed in December 2015 commits 197 countries, including the U.S., to take steps to limit future global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius. While it may be too late for the Pasterze glacier, if we really commit as a world, we might be able to stop ourselves from sinking whole countries and turning Miami into a swimming pool and stuff like that.

And who knows, with a little luck, and a little more not poisoning the sky, we just might recapture a little of that Alpine magic one day.

Why Did Kendrick Lamar Call Out Drake For Tupac’s Ring At ‘The Pop Out’?

kendrick lamar The Pop Out – Ken & Friends Presented by pgLang and Free Lunch
Getty Image

Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out — Ken & Friends Juneteenth concert — at Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Wednesday night, June 19 — was bookended by Lamar reasserting his deep hatred for Drake. Lamar began his set with “Euphoria,” and his instantly iconic finale involved running through “Not Like Us” five times (six, if you count the instrumental as he left the stage) — both live debuts of his Drake diss tracks.

Fans noticed something different about “Euphoria,” as explained below.

Why Did Kendrick Lamar Call Out Drake For Tupac’s Ring At The Pop Out?

While performing “Euphoria” live for the first time, Lamar added a bar: “Give me Tupac’s ring back, and I might give you a lil respect.”

Last July, Drake bought a custom ring formerly belonging to the late Tupac Shakur at an auction. USA Today reported at the time that Drake dropped more than $1 million for the ring, which Sotheby’s described in a press release as “an exceedingly rare piece of Tupac’s signature aesthetic and a slice of hip-hop history” while confirming that Drake was the purchaser “after Shakur’s grandmother and lifelong supporter, Yaasmyn Fula, put it up for auction.”

Seeing as Tupac was a cornerstone for West Coast rap — Lamar has since taken on the mantle — and Drake has absolutely no allies within Los Angeles rap, it makes sense that Drake owning anything related to Tupac doesn’t sit well with Lamar.

Tangentially related, Lamar name-checked Tupac twice (“You think the Bay gon’ let you disrespect ‘Pac, n****?” & “Yeah, it’s all eyes on me, and I’ma send it up to ‘Pac”) in “Not Like Us” after Drake used AI-generated voices of Tupac and Snoop Dogg on “Taylor Made Freestyle,” one of his Kendrick diss tracks from April. Drake took a massive L on that — deleting it from social media after Tupac’s estate threatened legal action.

Austin Butler Continues To Be The Most Charming Actor Of 2024 So Far (Sorry, Glen Powell)

Austin Butler Golden Globes 2023
Getty Image

Austin Butler has come so far since he and Carrie Bradshaw broke up. After jumping from a never-ending Oscar campaign right into the Dune universe, he then made his way over to join a motorcycle gang in The Bikeriders, where he seems the most at peace. As evident by his current press cycle, Butler is quickly coming for Glen Powell’s role of 2024’s Most Charming Leading Man Aged 20-35, Blonde Division. It’s a surprisingly saturated pool!

Butler stars in The Bikeriders alongside Tom Hardy and a particularly hairy Norman Reedus. But movie aside, he’s giving the best performance of the season by simply being himself. Wholesome! Especially after he spent the last three years as Elvis.

The actor might be pretty tired of answering journalist’s questions, which is why he seems to be doing the interviewing this time around. He’s chatted about bunnies, art, and why writers don’t have a social life.

This isn’t the first time Butler has gone off the rails in an endearing way. Earlier this month, he told Bravo Australia, “I don’t like talking about myself. What else can you tell me? How old are you? What are you interested in?” Hopefully she did not get in trouble for answering that she likes art.

This seems like the beginning of a romantic comedy where a big-name celebrity is desperate to be treated like a normal person. Luckily, Butler has been through this on Hannah Montana.

But what gets Butler most excited is when interviewer Simon Harkness told him that he was the closest thing we have to James Dean. It seems like Butler has been waiting his whole life to hear that.

Meanwhile, Glen Powell is out hunting tornadoes or something.

The Bikeriders
hits theaters on June 21st.
