Tory Lanez Arrested For Having Concealed Weapon With Megan Thee Stallion In The Car

TMZ reports Tory Lanez was arrested Sunday morning after an altercation at a Hollywood Hills house party apparently turned violent. Police charged the Canadian rapper with possession of a concealed weapon. Megan Thee Stallion was reportedly also in the car and suffered a minor injury to her foot from broken glass.

Police were called to the party in response to a “disturbance” around 4:30am which witnesses reported began with an argument near an SUV parked outside and ended with gunfire. After someone fired shots in the air, the SUV fled the scene. Witnesses gave officers a description of the vehicle, from which they were able to locate it shortly afterward. Police searched the vehicle and found gun. Tory was charged with a felony, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle.

Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion previously got into some trouble while spending time in each other’s company during quarantine. Fans noticed during a livestream of Tory’s Quarantine Radio that the two rappers weren’t observing social distancing rules and teased the two with dating rumors. Those rumors will likely be exacerbated by the news that they were partying together, but considering how their last few rendezvous have turned out, they might want to stick with “Netflix and chill” for their next few “dates.”

Friends And Fans Mourn The Tragic Passing Of ‘Glee’ Alum Naya Rivera

On Monday, news broke that Glee alum Naya Rivera, who had gone missing last week, was confirmed dead following a multi-day search. It appears to have been a tragic accident. Rivera had gone boating with her four-year-old son on Lake Piru in Ventura County, California, but by late afternoon her son was discovered without his mother. She was 33 years old.

Though she was best-known for playing the singing cheerleader Santana Lopez on the beloved musical comedy show, from its pilot on, Rivera had a long and diverse career, starting when when she was a baby who appeared in Kmart commercials. The younger Rivera made appearances on everything from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Family Matters to Baywatch to CSI: Miami. After her Glee breatkthrough, she moved into music while acting on shows like Lifetime’s Devious Maids and YouTube Red’s Step Up: High Water.

In other words, she amassed a lot of friends and fans, many of whom took to Twitter after the news of her passing broke to memorialize the newly departed performer. That included fellow Glee colleagues:

It included bands whose songs Rivera covered on Glee.

It included people who worked with her, even if briefly.

And people who met her.

Or knew her.

It included fellow performers.

And people who were just fans.

And it included people she inspired.

Some people posted a short film she directed for Immigrant Heritage Month — a fitting way to say farewell to someone who should still be with us.

California’s Governor Has Ordered All Indoor Operations Statewide To Close As Coronavirus Surges Again

Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state would experience a significant rollback of its reopening process as California continues to struggle with record high COVID-19 case numbers. Governor Newsom ordered all indoor operations at restaurants, wineries(though they may still operate outdoors), movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos, museums, and cardrooms to be closed statewide, with bars ceasing all operations.

Additionally, 11 more counties across the state must join a list that includes cities from San Diego to Marin that must also close salons, barbershops, places of worship, offices in non-critical sectors, malls, and gyms, including Los Angeles County.

The city of Los Angeles, with its 134,000 cases, is home to nearly half of the state’s total cases and has been particularly hard hit. According to the Los Angeles Times, the LA Unified school district, the nation’s second-largest school system, which is home to half a million students and over 75,000 employees, will not reopen campuses at the start of the school year in August due to the high case number in the county.

As of July 12, 2020, California has a total of 320,804 cases of COVID-19, with over 7,000 deaths, 6,322 hospitalizations, and 1,806 people currently in intensive care units, according to data from the California Department of Public Health. The state seems to be entering its second lockdown, and as the first state to shut down its economy back in March when the pandemic began, it might be a harbinger of things to come as the country continues to battle rising infection rates in various cities.

Taika Waititi’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Vibe Was Inspired By A 1980s Kurt Russell Movie And A Classic Rock Song

Thor: Ragnarok is widely held up as one of the strangest — and arguably one of the best — of the MCU titles, in large part because it was helmed by Taika Waititi. The actor-filmmaker — of comedies like the What We Do in the Shadows film and the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit — was really allowed to bring his singular sensibility to the ripped Norse god’s third solo outing, and bring it he did. But even the most eccentric style is informed by other works, and Waititi recently revealed there were two chief influences that helped make Ragnarok what it is.

As caught by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Waititi recently made an appearance on “Pizza Film School,” the YouTube series hosted by Anthony and Joe Russo, and he told his Marvel colleagues that one film that really inspired the third Thor was the John Carpenter classic Big Trouble in Little China, starring Kurt Russell as a reluctant — and not always successful — hero.

In the 1987 cult fave, Russell’s truck driving Jack Burton finds himself unwittingly embroiled in skirmish with magical warriors. Meanwhile, Thor is none-too-happy to be stuck on a garbage-strewn planet, forced to fight his way back to Earth.

“[Thor] just wants to get home,” Waititi said. “[H]e’s willing to leave people but also he’s trying to keep everyone together. He’s trying to be charismatic, and he’s trying to be a hero. He fails a lot, and tonally, that’s something from Big Trouble that I carried with me into Ragnarok.”

There was another thing that greatly influenced Waititi, but it wasn’t another movie. It was a song, namely Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” off their third album, from 1970. Though it was influenced by the band visiting Iceland, the lyrics include references to Valhalla, aka Thor’s home.

“That song is basically about Thor,” asserted Waititi. He added:

“Just knowing the tone, knowing that it had to be playful and over the top … that this is unapologetically a space opera, and I’m going to pump this with colour and life and energy and humour, and cool music. And the way I feel about that film is like if you’d ask a bunch of 10 year olds what they want in that movie; we basically said yes to every idea. On paper, it doesn’t make any sense. But with Thor, I think it makes perfect sense.”

Waititi also said, in forcing Thor to team up with characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk/Bruce Banner, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, and Korg, the rock-man voiced by Waititi himself, he “wanted to capture a road trip of people who had no business hanging out with each other.”

The filmmaker will be returning for the character’s fourth at-bat, Thor: Love and Thunder, though, given the state of the world, who knows when that will begin filming. But Waititi said he’s grateful, in a way, for the setback, as he now has plenty of time to hone the script.

“There are a few positive things I can take away. One of them is that a lot of these films, and films in general, are rushed or you don’t have as much time as you’d want to have on the script and things like that,” he told the Russos. He continued:

“We’re still writing Love and Thunder and I think it’s good to just keep writing and then you know, we’ll have a really, really good script. And with writing, especially, you should use as much of that time as possible to get your story right, because you never really get it later on. Film is an industry where you’re always complaining about not having enough time. I think, right now, we’ve given ourselves a huge amount of time to work on all sorts of things so we may as well use it.”

Sabrina Ionescu’s Debut Against The Storm Headlines The WNBA’s Opening Day Schedule

The WNBA released its 2020 schedule on Monday. The teams will play 22 regular-season games in the “Wubble,” with two games against all opponents. All 12 teams will be in action during opening weekend at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida where training camps are already underway.

Opening weekend will be dedicated to Black Lives Matter and honor victims of police brutality and racial violence, and the first game of the season will be a marquee attraction. Sabrina Ionescu, the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, is set to make her debut as the New York Liberty will face off against the Seattle Storm and returning stars Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart on July 25 at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Ionescu averaged 18 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season with the Oregon Ducks as she completed one of the all-time great college basketball careers. After an MVP season in 2018, Stewart missed the entire 2019 season due to a ruptured Achilles injury she suffered overseas. Bird missed last season as well following arthroscopic surgery on her left knee in May 2019. The Storm went with 18-16 without Stewart and Bird last season, but will look to return to championship contention in 2020.

Following the opener, the Los Angeles Sparks will go head-to-head with long-time rival Phoenix Mercury at 3 p.m. ET on ABC. All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith will make her debut with her new team as she pairs up WNBA’s all-time leading scorer, Diana Taurasi in the Mercury backcourt. Diggins-Smith was acquired by the Mercury in an offseason trade with the Dallas Wings. Taurasi only appeared in six games last season due to a back injury. The Los Angeles Sparks will be without Chiney Ogwumike and guard Kristi Toliver will be sitting out for the 2020 WNBA season due to health reasons.

The last national TV game of opening day will feature the Indiana Fever against the Washington Mystics on CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m. ET. The 2019 champion Mystics will tip off their 2020 campaign potentially without a number of key players, including MVP Elena Delle Donne who still awaits the results of a medical evaluation.

Richaun Holmes Broke The NBA’s Bubble For Food Delivery And Is Back In Quarantine

The NBA’s Orlando bubble officially suffered its first breaks on Monday. The first was when Bruno Caboclo of the Rockets broke quarantine on accident by leaving his room before being cleared, and now must enter an eight-day quarantine.

Later in the day, Sacramento Kings big Richaun Holmes revealed he too had violated the league’s guidelines by picking up food delivery over the weekend. The move put Holmes outside of the NBA’s established parameters for safely distancing from the rest of society as the league attempts to finish its postseason schedule at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, and so he will be quarantined from the rest of the team for the next week.

News broke via Holmes himself, who tweeted on Monday afternoon that he had accidentally broken the bubble and apologized for his actions.

As many pointed out online, Holmes was one of the few NBA players that defended the league amid some player frustration with the food selection in the bubble. Players initially had to self-quarantine in hotel rooms and were initially frustrated by a lack of selection as they attempt to round back into playing shape.

In his apology, Holmes did not specify what delivery service he used or what he ordered, though the meal is much more important than the delivery vehicle if you ask me. The move comes amid the NBA disclosing that two players tested positive in the bubble as the league tries to ready its players and staff for an extended, safe stay in the bubble.

Even his mother was disappointed with the news.

If anything, the early violation of the rules may help athletes still adhering to the guidelines in the bubble take themselves and their safety much more seriously. Getting coronavirus could be a career-altering illness with still-unknown long-term effects, but becoming ineligible for play because of food delivery is far more embarrassing a fate. No one wants to actually miss NBA playoff games at this point, especially for a lukewarm, smashed McDouble.

The Cinematographer Of ‘The Matrix’ Said Stanley Kubrick(?) Was To Blame For The ‘Soul-Numbing’ Sequels

The Matrix is a trilogy that’s getting a +1 at a date tentatively scheduled for 2022 or later, as filming pretty much anything has been on hold amid the coronavirus outbreak. We do know that Lana Wachowski wrote the script, and Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back for more bullet time. And we also know that the rumored filming schedule is pretty hefty, which may be why cinematographer Bill Pope isn’t returning for a fourth installment.

Pope worked the first three movies, but clarified his decision in a chat with Roger Deakins on the latest “Team Deakins” podcast,

According to IndieWire, the filming was pretty hellish for a number of reasons. Pope called shooting The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions “mind-numbing and soul-numbing,” which isn’t a great thing to say about shoots that lasted 276 days

“Everything that was good about the first experience was not good about the last two,” Pope said. “We weren’t free anymore. People were looking at you. There was a lot of pressure. In my heart, I didn’t like them. I felt we should be going in another direction. There was a lot of friction and a lot of personal problems, and it showed up on screen to be honest with you. It was not my most elevated moment, nor was it anyone else’s.”

The pressure to match the genre-altering success of the first Matrix film could get to just about anyone, especially given that long a time at work. But Pope also said some directorial influence on the Wachowskis didn’t help, either.

“The Wachowskis had read this damn book by Stanley Kubrick that said, ‘Actors don’t do natural performances until you wear them out.’ So let’s go to take 90! I want to dig Stanley Kubrick up and kill him.”

It does sound pretty miserable when you put it like that, which perhaps is why the resulting films were also a bit of a slog when they finally hit screens. Still, the stars of the forthcoming Matrix seem to love the script for the movie. Hopefully getting it all on film will be a bit more enjoyable experience this time around.

The NBA Announced Two Of 322 Players Tested Positive In Orlando And Are In Isolation

When NBA teams began arriving at Disney, the biggest expected hurdle for the success of the league’s attempt at a bubble was going to be the first round of testing and avoiding an MLS-like internal outbreak that has caused the withdrawal of two entire teams due to the virus spreading to 10 and nine players respectively.

The good news was that the NBA’s plan allowed for a longer quarantine period for players after arriving and the hope would be that they’d catch and isolate any cases before teams began practicing together. On Monday, we learned the results of the very first round of testing, as the league announced that two of the first 322 tests from July 7 came back positive and those players had not yet cleared quarantine. As such, they had been removed from the bubble, either to isolate at home or to go to isolation housing.

That seems to indicate the bubble is off to a good start, but now that teams are practicing with each other, the next week of testing will reveal just how well it has done at keeping players safe. The league’s protocols have kept some players at home to await being cleared, like Russell Westbrook who announced a positive test on Monday, and that is an indication that things are working — even given the unfortunate reality that some players were inevitably going to test positive. The hope was that by the time they got to the bubble, they could’ve caught all of the positives — or, at the very least, catch them in the initial quarantine period. Initial testing seems to show that’s happened, and now everyone crosses their fingers that the bubble keeps working as intended.
